It’s that time of year again – Halloween! That’s right, it’s October and Halloween is just around the corner. I’m pretty sure we all know how Halloween works here in North America, but it is also celebrated in some unique ways around the world.

Here are some facts about Halloween in other countries:

In France, Halloween is not celebrated at all. They don’t In Germany, people put celebrate it because they want away their knives on to honour their dead Halloween night. They do this ancestors. because they don’t want to harm the returning spirits.

In Austria, some people put bread, water and a lighted lamp on their table on Halloween night. They do this because it was once believed that these items would welcome the souls to Earth.

Here are some other interesting facts about Halloween:

1) Jack-O-Lanterns weren’t originally pumpkins-they were turnips!

2) Halloween was originally referred to as “All Hallows Eve”, which was a celebration that honoured the dead.

3) 86% of Americans decorate their homes for Halloween.

With the recent celebration of Thanksgiving, you’ve probably packed on a few pounds from all the Thanksgiving grub. Rather than trying to eat less to shed those few extra pounds, why not try this low-fat, eco-friendly, meatless meat-loaf recipe that will surely excite your taste buds and the environmentalist inside you? How is this good for the environment you ask? Well, the “meatless” part of this recipe not only saves animals from being slaughtered, it also reduces the pollution involved in transporting the animals from the farm to the slaughter house, to the packaging factory then to our local supermarkets. Remember: Always try to buy local! Meatless Meatloaf Ingredients: 2 eggs 1 tablespoon of soy sauce 1 box medium firm silken tofu (350 g) 3/4 cup chopped walnuts 1 packet of vegan dried onion soup mix (1.5 oz) 1 teaspoon of oil 1 & 1/2 cups of chopped onion 2/4 cups of chopped celery 2 cups of chopped mushrooms 1 & 1/2 teaspoons each of oregano and basil 1/2 teaspoon of sage 1 & 1/2 cups bread crumbs (Variations: To make it stick together better, try lowering the bread crumbs to 3/4 cup and adding one of the following: 1 extra box of tofu, 1 cup of instant mashed potato flakes, 1 - 1 1/2 cup of cooked brown rice or 1 cup of burger-style crumbles) Directions: Mix eggs, soy sauce, tofu & onion soup mix together into blender. Add walnuts & blend until smooth. Sauté vegetables until onions are transparent (add other diced veggies if you wish – e.g. peppers, carrots). Add herbs/spices while vegetables are frying. Mix blender ingredients, cooked vegetables and bread crumbs together in a large bowl. Press into a greased loaf pan or a square cake pan and coat the loaf evenly with ketchup so that it can get kind of burnt and caramelized. Bake at 350°Fahrenheit for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Leave to cool for about 5 minutes. Slice and serve. Bon appétit! Crystal Yuen

So as we all know, we had recently passed by Thanksgiving Day. No, I am not going to talk about how Thanksgiving Day came to be. I’m going to talk about how we are not thankful enough. I see so many kids complaining about things like school, parents, homework and whatnot nowadays. Ironically, I’m guilty of this myself but we all need to remember something. We live in a great place. This is going to sound cliché, but we should be thankful for our parents and that we are able to go to school. Yeah, sometimes they give us a hard time with their nagging, but it’s only because they care about us. There’s a reason why they don’t want us to be doing certain things. Yeah, it can be annoying, but I love my parents and brothers and sisters regardless, because their concern is born out of unconditional love.

This summer my mom went to the hospital. Like anyone else, the hospital is the last place you would ever want to see your loved ones in. She is fine now, but after that, I learned to never take anything for granted. A moment is still a moment even if it’s a split second and in that second anything can happen.

‘DONNIE DARKO’ — 2001 STARRING: JAKE GYLLENHAAL, JENA MALONE, AND D REW BARRYMORE

This month, we at BAM are trying the Halloween theme on for size for both issues. Although this is not directly classifiedpic as a Halloween flick, ‘Donnie Darko’ is classified as the cult film of this century. Not to mention that it is pretty darn freaky — that has to count for something, right?

‘Donnie Darko’ is another exception to my twentieth century rule, because it just exceeded all of my expectations. I had no way of knowing that something with Jake Gyllenhaal could be this amazing, especially considering his recently devolving acting career (no offence to him).

This is the story of a mentally troubled teenager named Donnie Darko, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. After narrowly escaping a freak accident, Donnie’s life is disturbed by hallucinations of a six-foot, ugly as sin bunny rabbit named Frank. I know, it sounds rather silly (which is one reason I had doubts to start), but it truly was amazing.

Frank, played by James Duval, convinces Donnie that the only reason he avoided the accident was his interference, and uses that earned ‘favour’ to manipulate Donnie into committing mostly juvenile crimes. However, Donnie is also plagued with the knowledge delivered to him by Frank that the world will end in approximately twenty-eight days. Although not entirely convinced at first, Donnie is pulled through events that leave him no choice but to believe.

The movie is overall dark, but the excessive profanity and grim humour in sections bring a glowstick into the room, providing just enough light to get around, but not quite enough to be completely comfortable. Then the writers throw you an ending that you could never have fully prepared yourself for, even if you added up most of the clues. The second the movie ended, I knew I would need to watch it again to fully appreciate the depth of the theme.

Overall, this movie is well worth the watch, and I highly recommend it over some of the recent circus act rejects movie we have around us (example: most horror movies released after 1990). Although the themes are heavy and the language is probably not something you want to be playing with your parents in the room (unless they’re really cool like my mom), this movie should definitely be watched before the world ends.

WHY THE NHL IS FINALLY HOT AGAIN

And the NBA is not.

Justin Chau Sports Columnist

In 1994, Sports Illustrated put on its cover the headline “Why the NHL is hot and the NBA is not.” Soon afterwards, the opposite came true as the NHL went through years of violent and boring games and hit rock bottom as in 2004, as the NHL became the first sports league ever in American modern

history to stage a complete-season lockout. Finally, after 16 years of painfully watching the NHL degrade from a relevant sports league that was regularly broadcasted on ESPN to a league whose teams included the Phoenix Coyotes—who were filling up their arena to 50% capacity—things are looking up. Here are some reasons why:

1) Definitive faces of the league: Everyone knows who Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin are. The NHL finally has in those two what they had back in their glory days with Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Maurice “Rocket” Richard. These players represent the league with their play and they are doing it extremely well. Both of those players have given the Pittsburgh and Washington franchises a much-needed reboot in fan interest. 2) League Parity: In the 2010 NBA Playoffs, only four out of fifteen series ended up in a win for the lower seed. The 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs, in comparison, resulted in seven of the fifteen series with a win for the lower seeded team, with the seventh seeded team in the East able to advance all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. Upsets add to the excitement of the playoffs, and the NBA just didn’t have enough. Another interesting fact is that the NBA Playoffs only had two 7-game series (the most exciting ones) while the Stanley Cup Playoffs had four. Also, it is far easier for a 15th place NHL team to get back into playoff contention than for a similar NBA team, like how the Phoenix Coyotes and the Colorado Avalanche did last season. I can bet you, however, that the NBA’s New Jersey Nets won’t be in the playoffs any time soon. The NBA has a guaranteed winner in the Miami Heat who have Lebron James, Chris Bosh AND Dwayne Wade. This makes games against them boring (as you know they will most likely win). 3) Rising Attendance: As I said in the opening paragraph, the Phoenix Coyotes were only filling their arena up 50%. However, since the end of last year’s regular season and during the playoffs, they were consistently selling out their arenas. While average league attendance was slightly down, it pales in comparison to the NBA’s recent troubles:

4) Exciting games: In the early 1990s, NHL teams began to use the Offside Trap tactic, resulting in extremely boring games. The lockout of 2004 got rid of that, and that coupled with smaller goalie pads, larger goals, and some other rules combined to make hockey exciting again. Last year’s NHL playoffs were just that: exciting. Who could resist cheering on the eighth seed, the Montreal Canadiens, as they upset the top-seed Washington Capitals in a Cinderella run that resulted in them losing in a close 7-game series to the Philadelphia Flyers, who were the seventh seed? 5) America finally starting to notice hockey: You ask Americans what they think of Sidney Crosby, they’ll stare at you blankly and say something along the lines of “Is he one of those guys on TV or something?” Things may be different now, however, after the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The gold-medal game (which Canada won 3-2, OT) attracted 27.6 million viewers, the most viewers of a hockey game in American history. The ratings for the NHL also spiked after the game.

Now, I am not saying that the NHL is more popular than the NBA, because that is far from the truth. Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals obtained an 18.2 rating and 28.2 million viewers, while Game 6 of the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs with only a 5.8 rating. These are huge numbers for both leagues. The NBA is still far more profitable than the NHL and its franchises are more stable than the NHL’s (the Phoenix Coyotes are literally bankrupt and are now owned by the league itself). However, these numbers may soon change as hockey becomes more accessible and easier to watch with HDTV making the puck action a lot easier to see.

The 2010-2011 NHL and NBA seasons are starting, so go and cheer for your teams!

This year, the Burnett swim team has head off with a great start by having a professional swimming coach- Jiang Li, the parent of Lily Li from Grade S 10! He chose a main stroke per person and concentrated on it by fixing the movements. Even though the I practice was tiring, the members improved a lot. The swim team would like to thank Mr.Li for helping out and wish him good luck back in China. We are glad M to have teacher sponsors, Ms.Stolberg, and Ms. Devoy.
