  • EZEKIEL COOPER and the ASBURY-LEE DISPUTE of 1793-94 by Lester B
EZEKIEL COOPER AND THE ASBURY-LEE DISPUTE OF 1793-94 by Lester B. Scherer In 1781 the American Methodists, proliferating rapidly around the Chesapeake, brought into their circle a Maryland squire's son named Ezekiel Cooper (1763-1847). He became one of the prominent figures in the young denomination: preacher, presiding elder, gen- eral book steward, and leader in Conference debate. For twenty months beginning in February 1793 Cooper served in New England, initially on the slowly growing- Boston circuit. He soon became an unwilling participant-Ga hsciplinary dispute (and evidently a personal struggle) between Bishop Francis Asbury and Jesse Lee. The first indication that anything was amiss appears in Cooper's journal for March 23,1793. I found that my dear brother Lee has not enforced the Discipline in this place (i.e., Lynn). It was a considerable exercise to my mind to think that an old preacher of his standing should introduce such a precedent in our church as to dispense with a plain and positive rule as long as he had done in this town. Any who choose may come to the classes, and as long as they please, without joining. Six months, nine months, nay, a year and not join.' Customarily persons were permitted to visit class only a few times without applying for membership. In the Notes to the 1798 Discipline Bishops Asbury and Coke gave the reason for this old Methodist rule. To admit frequently unawakened persons to our society meetings and love feasts would be to throw a damp on those profitable assemblies and cram, if not entirely destroy, that liberty of speech which is always made a peculiar blessing to earnest believers and sincere seekers of salvation.' On April 25 Cooper reported: "I met two classes today, but we had only a dead time.

Kids Soar is a Virginia Conference Advance Special and a direct Left in the Prayer Room... service provider for children, youth and families of poverty in inner-city Roanoke. For over 30 years, this UM mission has addressed the basic needs of poverty by teaching skills, and providing opportunities for growth and education for a successful future. Kids Soar received 1,324 books at Annual Conference and the 5K! According to the Roanoke District, "They were overwhelmed, with joy, as the heart of their program is literacy!!" One annual conference member brought 12 boxes from the school where she teaches, as her fellow teachers donated books. Dr. Kevin Watson shared another Bible study. He cited John Wesley's three rules, "Do no harm. Do good. Stay in love with God." This is a specific vision of how the Christian life should be. "It's not an aspiration. It's specific," he said. Watson talked about the class meetings in early Methodism.

It may have been only a passing remark with no more substantial basis than humorous fancy, but it is singularly descriptive of the Methodist preachers whose coming to New England in the path of George Whitefield was mentioned in the preceding chapter. That was not to be until nineteen years after Whitefield's death, when Jesse Lee reached Norwalk, Connecticut, on the twentieth of June, 1789, and one woman having refused him permission to preach in a house and another forbidden him to stand in her orchard, he addressed himself to some twenty people who gathered around him on the street.

Saunders, Margaret R. Bicentennial celebration, 1782-1982 ^p^^. "^^SrS^ 1782 — 1982 Cover drawing b\; Jane Milbrath Jewell A History Of Methodism In The Albemarle Methodism came to the Albemarle area of North Carolina on December 1, 1782 with the arrival in Edenton of two Methodist preachers, Jesse Lee and Edward Dromgoole. They were sent by the Rev. Caleb Pedicord, a presiding elder in Virginia, to lay out a circuit "if the outlook was hopeful." After holding meetings in nineteen different places, they formed the Camden Circuit, which extended from Edenton to Currituck. They began with 22 member. Jesse Lee was born in Prince George County, Virginia on March 12, 1758. He joined the Methodist Society in 1774 at the age of 16. Edward Dromgoole was a native of Sligo, Ireland and was brought up as a Catholic. He joined the Methodist Society after hearing the Methodists preach in his native country. He began preaching in America in 1774. It is said that he named the settlement of Sligo, North Carolina in Currituck County. According to an account in the Rev. Jesse Lee's Journal he and Edward Dromgoole arrived in Camden County at Plank Bridge (near Camden Courthouse) on December 4, 1782. They reported "about thirty people came." The two preachers presumably went on to Currituck and returned by way of Indiantown, where they held a meeting on December 13th. They reported a large congregation "although it was very cold." What seems to have been the most fruitful meeting was a gathering the next Sunday at River Bridge, a settlement about a mile from present day South Mills.

Preachers in Politics By Jacob Simpson Payton It is frequently charged that if one wishes to see politics operating at the very height of smoothness and efficiency, he has only to elbow his way into the inner circles of The Methodist Church. Indeed, acr~ossnearly la sclore of years certain members of C~ngr~esshave told me that the earliest and best training that they ever received in the school of politics was when they served as delegates to annual, jurisdictional and general conferences of The Methodist Church. Of course while Methodism, past and present, may contain in- stances of ambitious men compounding piety with politics for what they consider to be the greater glory of God, the number is relative- ly few. And we may dismiss as facetious the remarks about our conferences being so many West Points for the training of either party or ecclesiastical politicians, although they may help. However, there is a field which has been quite neglected by the historians of our Church. An interesting study might be made and presented under the title, '(The Debt of Methodism to Early Ameri- can Politicians." While we cannot here pursue that subject, a few hnts may not be amiss. Take for example the case of the Honorable Richard Bassett re- ceiving as hs guests, upon their arrival, the emissaries sent out by Jlohn Wesley in 1784. He furnished Bishop Cloke with a hlorse on which to make the first rounds lof his American appointments. He took into his home during his last illness, Richard Whatcoat, one of our tearliest Bishlops, cared flor him, buried him from his manor and paid the funeral bill.
