HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, 4 of 21 August 5, 2011 harnessracing.com Broad Bahn Looking For A Hambo High Broad Bahn, a colt trained by Noel Daley and owned by Lief Alber, could be peaking at the right time to give his con- nections their first Hambo win. A $20,000 yearling, Broad Bahn has already won $404,528 and this season has put up a slate of 7-3-3-1. His elim win in 1:53 was a career-best time. He is 4-1 on the morning line. Broad Bahn’s connections chose post one for the $1.5 mil- lion Hambo final. Daley attrib- uted that choice to the horse’s

Micheal Lisa/Lisa Photo Micheal best racing style. “I’m planning on being in front,” he said. “That’s why I chose George Brennan to drive him; he’s aggressive and can make speed. I want to be on the front because it seems to be his best trip because he’s a big, free-running horse and I would rather be there with him. I Broad Bahn know for a million and a half there will be leavers, although there won’t be a lot of them. He doesn’t have quick speed out of a hole, it takes him time to wind up, but he’s got the gate speed and he doesn’t give up.” Daley said that a recent take-back trip did not work out well for his trotter. “In the Beal final, George chastised himself after the race because he left and then let Pastor Stephen go. That gave Dejarmbro the chance to fly by and we couldn’t make up enough ground in the final yards,” explained Daley. If Broad Bahn does win the Hambo, Daley will attribute at least some of the success to a new training technique—an equine hypobaric stall. “It simulates high-altitude training,” said Daley. “It’s like what some people said worked for Mine That Bird in the Kentucky Derby, when he trained in New Mexico and then shipped down to near sea level and won. Some people think that helped. It helps the body naturally increase red blood cells, which are infused with oxygen.” Daley said he was willing to try the chamber, but doesn’t think it will work on every horse. “He spends about six hours a day in there. The technology has been around a long time. Olympic athletes have been known to sleep in a similar kind of tent. The science behind it works, but not always,” he said. “I picked two horses to try it with, him and a filly. It did absolutely nothing for her. I don’t know if it’s helped him or not, but if nothing else it’s a nice air-conditioned stall with all of the dust and allergens filtered out, which can’t be bad. It’s got to keep him health- ier. He’s at about the equivalent of 17,000 feet in a nice cool 72-degree stall during the hottest part of the day. It certainly isn’t hurting him. It’s not going to make him faster, but hopefully he’ll be able to carry his speed a little farther.” HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, 5 of 21 August 5, 2011 harnessracing.com

Smedshammer 15-1 HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, 16 of 21 August 5, 2011 harnessracing.com Eye On Meadowlands SUNSHINE MEADOWS Weekend Preview’s Gordon Waterstone played a $40 ticket EQUESTRIAN VILLAGE on last Saturday’s Pick 5 at the Meadowlands—and cashed for $20.65. The focus this Saturday at the Big M is the 1 Mile, 5/8 Mile, Euro Track – Maintained Daily! Seasonal & Annual Boarding $150,000 guaranteed Pick 4 (with a 15-percent takeout) on 18 Barns – Beautiful Paddocks races 6-9, including the final-leg Hambletonian. RACE 7 Post Position Wins at the Meadowlands Either SAN PAIL and ARCH MADNESS, the one-two finish- PP 123 45678910 ers in last month’s Maple Leaf Trot at Mohawk, will win this race. I give a slight edge to Arch Madness, but only because Starts 830 830 830 830 830 829 801 721 604 286 the Ontario-based San Pail is on foreign ground this time Win 102 98 97 87 130 95 79 74 44 27 around. I’ll go out on the limb and give the edge to CHAPTER SEVEN, who finished a late-closing second in his elimination and looks to be primed and ready in his third start of the year. The other obvious favorites are MANOFMANYMISSIONS and BROAD BAHN, but I wouldn’t be surprised if WHIT, OPENING NIGHT or PASTOR STEPHEN springs the upset.
