OUR OPINION Keeping schools open, as normal as possible t’s good to hear the Florida Department of Education comment on the Center for Disease Control’s upgrad- Ied guidelines for public school operation and reassure Floridians that face-to-face education will continue to remain open and available to everyone in the state. We only have to look at the public schools in our region for top-notch examples on success in reopening schools and keeping them open with very few problems during this pandemic scene that has plagued us during most of 2020 and now early 2021. School officials in both Columbia and Suwannee Counties have done an excellent job in giving their stu- dents the best option of attending classes face-to-face with a teacher in as safe an environment as possible. Positive cases among teachers, staff and students have been kept to a minimum and when these have arisen, the sick and exposed have gone home to quarantine until they could safely return. With very limited disruption, the plan has worked. Like every other state in the country, Florida tried the complete lockdown method of everything last April. Since, Florida has set the example of how to quickly reopen and most importantly remain open in the face of an unknown pandemic situation. Reach out, make the world a better place Florida’s public education system falls into this cate- gory where our state is leading the way in keeping the system open.
