Acharya Nagarjuna University held its 33rd and 34th Convocation on the Campus on December 28, 2013 in Dr. H.H. Deichmann & Dr. S. John David Auditorium – cum - Seminar Hall. The Chief Guest of the Convocation was Prof. S. Mahendra Dev, Director of Indira Gandhi Institute for Development Research, New Delhi, who delivered the Convocation address. He was conferred the Degree of Doctor of Letters by the University. In the Convocation 12,726 Graduates, 2787 Postgraduates, 4705 Graduates and 281 Postgraduates in Professional Courses, 205 Ph.D. and 76 M.Phil. candidates were conferred Degrees and Diplomas in various faculties. In addition 117 Gold Medals and 09 Prizes were conferred on the meritorious candidates. The Vice-Chancellor Prof. K. Viyyanna Rao presented a brief report of the activities and achievements of the university in the past three decades.

The Vice-Chancellor and other officials of Acharya Nagarjuna University offered warm felicitations to Prof. L. Venugopal Reddy on 09-10-2013 on his recent appointment as the Chairman of State Council of Higher Education, Hyderabad. Prof. Reddy served as the Vice-Chancellor of ANU during 2002-2005 and of Andhra University during 2005-2008. He is well-remembered for ushering in several academic and administrative reforms and for initiating substantial infrastructure development in ANU. ANU did not lose any time to felicitate its former Vice-Chancellor who left an indelible mark on academics and administration in the university. With the presence of other former Vice-Chancellors enlivening the occasion, there were high expectations regarding the future of higher education.

7 DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY AND AQUACULTURE

The Department of Zoology and Aquaculture organized a national level conference on Aquatic Toxicology, Biodiversity & Aquaculture from 15th – 17th November, 2013 at Hotel Ilapuram, Vijayawada. The conference was sponsored by NBA, DST and UGC. The Inaugural function was presided over by Prof. K. Viyyanna Rao, Vice-Chancellor, ANU. Plenary lectures and invited lectures were given by eminent scientists and academicians from various research organizations and central institutes. Addressing the gathering Prof. K. V. AWARD to Prof. C.V. RAGHAVULU VISITS ABROAD Prof. N. Veeraiah visited Jan Dlugosz University, Czestochowa, Poland, as Visiting Professor during September 15th to October 27th, 2013. During this period Prof. Veeraiah delivered a series of lectures on recent developments in Glass Science to the research students and staff of the University and also did collaborative research on glass materials in their laboratories. Prof. Veeraiah has also visited Ruðer Boškoviæ Institute, Department of Chemistry, Zagreb, Croatia and Babes-Bolyai University, Dept. of Physics, Cluj-Napoca, Romania to give talks and had fruitful discussions on future collaborative research with the faculty of these Universities. National Pharmacy Week Celebrations & NSS Special Camp

ANU College of Pharmaceutical Sciences celebrated the 52nd National Pharmacy Week from 18th to 24th, 2013 with the theme “Pharmacist - A Health Care Professional”. The NSS unit of ANUCPS conducted different programmes like health campaigns, medical camps, awareness rallies on different seasonal diseases like malaria, typhoid etc., Blood Donation camp and free Eye The inaugural and orientation programme for 1st screening camp. In this context ANUCPS adopted Nambur B. Pharmacy students of University College of village and conducted all the programmes there. Pharmaceutical Sciences was held on 21st October 2013. Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.Viyyanna Rao presided over the function. In his speech, he exhorted the students to develop communication skills, problem-solving skills and wished them a happy stay in the campus. Sri Rama Raju, Chairman, Laila Implex, Vijayawada, attended the function as Chief Guest and shared his business skills and work experiences in the field of pharmacy. The Principal Prof. A. Prameela Rani outlined the rules and regulations to be followed by the students in the college. She emphasized the scope and opportunities in the field of Pharmacy. On this occasion, Registrar Prof. R.R.L.Kantam, OSD Prof. Z. Vishnuvardhan, CDC Dean Prof. G.V.Chalam addressed the students. An inauguration programme of Instrumentation Lab was conducted in ANU College of Pharmaceutical Sciences on October 21, 2013 for newly procured instruments and equipment like Tenstage rotary tablet press (Riddhi), IR spectrophotometer, UV-Visible spectrophotometer, tablet coating pan and capsule filling machine. 16 In the Blood Donation Camp, nearly 60 units of CENTRE FOR BUDDHIST STUDIES blood samples were collected from the students and staff of ANUCPS. Drugs worth Rs. 40,000 were distributed to the patients in Medical Camp conducted in Nambur village. Volunteers of NSS units distributed approximately 3000 pamplets and 1000 leaflets about the precautions to be taken by the people to eradicate diseases. 219 members got their Eye checkup in the free Eye Screening camp which was organized on the premises of ANUCPS. The Centre for HRD of ANU organized a six day The Centre for HRD, ANU, conducted the Group-I & workshop on Research Methodology in Social Science for Group–II (APPSC) coaching classes for SC/ST/OBC and the SC/ST Research scholars from 03-12-2013 to 08-12- Minorities Students from 18-11-2013 to 30-11-2013 in the 2013 in association with the Indian Council of Social Science first phase. Vice-Chancellor Prof. K. V.Rao inaugurated the Research, Southern Region Centre, Osmania University programme, while the Registrar Prof.RRL Kantam, and Sri Library, Hyderabad. Prof. K.V.Rao, Vice-Chancellor, ANU, K.S. Lakshmana Rao MLC, Guntur, addressed the 607 Prof C. Beena, Honorary Director, ICSSR-SRC, Hyderabad Students who enrolled for this programme. The Coaching and eminent Resource Persons were invited from various class were conducted every day from 3.45 p.m. to 6.45 universities. About 40 Research Scholars participated in p.m. at Students Centre, ANU. the Workshop. The Centre for HRD of ANU organized a series of Workshop on Career Awareness workshops for students of all ANU Colleges. 1) Workshop on “Personality for Excellence” on 15-11-2013: Around 150 students registered and participated in the workshop. Prof. Z. Vishnuvardhan, Dept. of Botany, retired from Prof. R.R.L. Kantam, Dept. of Statistics, retired from service service on attaining superannuation on 30-11-2013. He had on attaining superannuation on 31-12-2013. The resource person was Prof. Ramkrishna Bhattacharya, Emeritus Fellow in English, UGC, New Delhi and an internationally known authority on Prof. Aditya Nigam, faculty member of Centre for Lokayata studies. In the first lecture, he traced origins of the Studies of Developing Societies, New Delhi, and a known philosophical materialism in India and its initial struggle with political theorist in India delivered a lecture on the theme idealism to an important text of Upanishadic tradition i.e "Postcolonialism, Marxism and Non-Western Thought" on Katha Upanishad.
