Vol. 18, No. 35 From the Beaches to the River District downtown Fort Myers AUGUST 30, 2019 A Musical That Moves You At Broadway Palm by Di Saggau roadway Palm’s 200th production is Once, and it’s one you don’t Bwant to miss. Based on the Oscar- winning 2007 movie, Once is about a Guy (Jack Gerhard) and a Girl (Mariah Lotz) who meet in an Irish bar in Dublin. Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the show is beautiful and moving, and revolves around two working-class characters who need each other. The set is a huge sprawling Irish Untitled from Robert Rauschenberg’s Urban Bourbon series pub and, prior to the show, audience image courtesy www.rauschenbergfoundation.org members are invited onstage to purchase world renowned artist, longtime Lee wine or beer at the bar. In this photo probably taken soon after the restaurant was built circa 1940, Buck stands before his drive-in restaurant on Palm Beach Boulevard (aka East First Street) on the northwest corner at Isabelle Street. Note the neon sign reading “Buck’s” on the roof. Also note the Art Deco/Moderne design flourishes: glass bricks around the entrance and the continuous “eyebrow” overhangs. The speaker mounted at the front of the building would have piped jukebox music to the parking lot, where customers enjoyed hamburgers, milkshakes and all the standard drive-in fare delivered by curb service. At heart, though, Buck proved to be a man of the sea more than a restauranteur. He was a successful fishing guide and charter-boat captain, as well as a boat builder. He was born in 1909 on Mound Key to Antonio and Maria Fernandez, natives of Portugal. Antonio, a missionary, became a fisherman to survive. In the mid-1930s, Buck ran the Wag Inn bar and barbecue and, in the late 1930s, he also managed a gas station. Both were east of Billy’s Creek Bridge. In November 1940, he built a sandwich stand with living quarters just east of Billy’s Creek Bridge. Today, condos dominate the landscape in the “East End.” The former location of Buck’s However, a week or so after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, drive-in is now part of a condo parking lot. photo by Gerri Reaves he posted a sign at his super sandwich stand, as it was known, reading “closed for the Augustine and wrote home that he enjoyed having someone else do the cooking. duration.” Later in the war, he sailed to the South Pacific to deliver reinforcements. Buck was off to Coast Guard service in World War II. He was stationed in St. In 1943, Margaret Mickle honored “Fonzy,” as he was called, by dedicating a fun-loving poem, “Captain of the Heads,” to him in her The News-Press column, “Local Low Down.” After the war ended, Buck returned to Fort Myers and reopened his drive-in. But, apparently, it wasn’t enough to hold his full attention, for within a few years, he built several boats, the 22-foot Pixy in 1950, the 30-foot cruiser Ballerina in 1952 and the Ballerina II in 1956. In 1956, he also left the restaurant business to work as a charter-boat captain out of Snug Harbor on Fort Myers Beach. The restaurant continued under the same name, however, well into the 1970s, followed by a few years as a game room. By the mid-1980s it was gone. Buck died in 1987, remembered more for boats than burgers. Visit “the East End” and see a neighborhood once dominated by the marine industry and sprinkled with fondly remembered eateries like Buck’s. Then, visit the following research centers to learn more about more about locals who loved the waters of Southwest Florida.
