Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have a comment, concern or question. “Home and School Working Together” M. Rempel Year End Awards Assembly: At the end of every school year we acknowledge student effort and achievement at our year end awards assembly. It has been suggested that we remind students at the beginning of the year of the awards they could be working towards. Awards include: Citizenship – awarded to students who exhibit leadership, positive attitude, respect and other behaviours that represent our school values Service - awarded to students who help in the overall functioning of the school on a regular basis Principal’s Award – awarded to students who consistently exhibit excellent work habits, attitude and effort in all of their classes. Top Academic Awards – these awards go to the top students in each grade and course. Athletic and Music Awards – these awards go to the top students from every team and music group. In the end, achievement should be all about each student doing their very best. School Safety and Visitors: A common concern that comes to our school’s Health and Safety Committee each year is related to visitors to our school. All visitors including parents who come to the school during the regular school day must first of all report to the office. If the visit involves picking up a child during the school day the office can page the classroom for the child to come to the office.Anyone who is planning to stay at the school for a period of time or who needs to walk around in the school must sign in as a visitor and wear a visitor tag. Anyone who would like to meet with a staff member should phone in advance and make an appointment. If there is an urgent need to meet with a staff member please report to the office and the staff member will be paged to the office. Student and staff safety is very important to us and we need everyone’s cooperation to ensure that our school is a safe place in which to learn and work. Communication

Parents and students stay “in the loop” by following our Twitter site (@lfmss) and our daily blog (www.lfmssnews.wordpress.com). Both links can be found on our school website (Langley Fundamental Mid & Sec School). After School Math Help

Extra math help is available to ALL grades after school for one hour in room W13 (Mr. Low’s room) every day except for some Mondays and Wednesdays. Middle School math help days are yet to be determined. There is no question too simple, and no question too difficult...that we won’t try at least anyways. Bring your pencil, bring your paper, bring your frustrations, and most of all bring your Math questions. Hope to see you there! Mr. Low

ACADEMIC SUPPORT Is your child struggling in one or more of their classes? What do I do to help my child?

If your child is struggling academically in their classes, a good starting point is to contact his/her teacher directly to explore reasons why this is the case. With support and guidance from the teacher, a plan is established providing parents/guardians with strategies to assist their child with learning at home. If your child continues to struggle, you may ask the teacher to provide some adaptations to their course work. At this point, the Classroom Teacher (CT) may approach the Resource Teacher (RT) with concerns about the academic ability and achievement of your child. The CT and RT will work together to determine some accommodations for your child to succeed in the classroom. If there is little or no evidence of improvement in your child’s progress, the CT may make a referral to our School Based Team where the CT, with parental consent, will present your child’s case describing their difficulties. This presentation is followed by discussion where additional strategies and solutions are examined and a plan of action is formulated which may include an academic assessment to decide appropriate interventions. The results from the assessment will determine whether or not your child qualifies for a Learning Assistance or a Resource block in their timetable. LFMSS PEER TUTORING – Students Helping Students Student tutors are on hand to support our own students in all subject areas. A list of tutors is available from the Resource Center, the Counselling Centre, and Teachers. All sessions will take place at the school either before or after school. The great Pumpkin Fun Run/Walk event is scheduled this year for Sunday, Oct 6. Starting and finishing at Aldor Acres Farm. All finishers receive post race refreshments, breakfast sandwiches provided CLAC, a chance to win great prizes and take home a free pumpkin from Aldor Acres, and it's a lovely 6K route.

We're very grateful to the RTO for organizing this on behalf of Langley School District ACE IT programs. This event raises bursary funds for students in our trades-training programs. Last school year, $2500 was raised and awarded through bursaries to 16 financially-challenged students to help pay for the students' tool kits and textbooks.

Please help spread the word. This is a great event for families!

Wizard of Oz: Audition Information

Dear Parent(s) and Student(s): Your son or daughter is interested in the LFMSS production of Wizard Oz this coming spring. Please familiarize yourself with the commitment and dates for the show. It opportunity is an exciting and great experience whether on stage or ‘behind the scenes’ but it requires a major commitment. Students should have been present at our after school meeting today Wednesday, September 25th to find out more about the audition process, complete the APPLICATION FORM the (with post-‐dated October 31st $75 musical fee which will only be cashed when they successfully audition) and be prepared for auditions on the dates listed on the first page. We may double cast the leads for the show so more students can be chosen and so they can be understudies if someone gets ill or can’t make a performance. The ensemble (chorus), minor roles and dance parts will not be double cast so everyone does all shows to simplify the blocking. We will be using the names Emerald Cast (A) and Ruby Cast (B) generally but may use A & B on the calendars to keep it simple. To audition, please do the following: 1. Go to http://www.titansmusic.com/musical and download the audition package 2. On the same page, download the script for all spoken parts and leads. a. Find the pages marked in ink at the top – for the part you want there may be a few pages for each part but they are marked at the top in handwritten ink ie Dorothy (1) pp. 1-3 b. Practice your lines by yourself and with another person standing in for the other parts. Try to memorize as much as possible but you may use the script when you audition. Demonstrating that you have taken the time and made the effort to memorize or know your lines well is something that will impress the Directing Team. c. Find the song(s) that pertain to your character and download the PDF file(s). Sing them along with the trax that are on the webpage. You only have to do the parts that are in PDF file – about one verse and chorus of the song(s). Sing strongly with good support, your best natural tone and with appropriate expression and emotion for that song. If the role you seek requires lots of singing then we are looking for a strong singer, if your role requires less singing you then still have to sing ‘ because it’s a musical’ so you must sing enthusiastically but you may not be on mic for your part. 3. Hand in your WIZARD of OZ APPLICATION on Monday September the 30 to Mr. Thompson or black box in the front office. Be sure to staple your cheque to the form and to include a recent headshot attached to the form where indicated. 4. Take note of the audition dates on the next page and all the dates referring to rehearsals, workshops, work bees and shows so you realize the commitment you are making. There will be a $75 WoZ show fee for all cast to be paid before auditioning. This will cover the following: WoZ Script, WoZ CD, WoZ Cast/Crew T-‐shirt, LFMSS WoZ Show DVD set, miscellaneous production and rehearsal costs such as rehearsal refreshments, materials, etc… Crew and Tech will the pay same later fee unless already confirmed as a member. We are also looking for help to find corporate sponsorship to raise the base costs of $15,000 for the show. If you would like to donate or help us find sponsors, please contact me. We will require lots of parent help especially in the areas of costumes, house (door, refreshments, sales), ticket sales, publicity, LFES elementary school liaison, supervision at rehearsals and shows, accountant, etc…. Please contact me, Steve Thompson regarding anything you could help with or any questions regarding the show. What is Game On? Game On! is a group mentoring program for providing boys and young men with information and support to make informed choices about a range of healthy lifestyle practices. Through non-traditional physical activities, complemented with healthy eating support, participants are engaged in life skills, communication, and emotional health discussions designed to engage participants in the pursuit of life-long healthy lifestyles.

Program Benefits In areas of gender and education research, key findings state that male adolescents frequently struggle with issues of body image, low levels of physical activity and unhealthy eating practices. Sound familiar?

In other words, boys and young men today go through much the same turmoil growing up as most of us did in our day. The journey to adulthood is never an easy one, but it can be smoothed out with the guidance and support of a mentor who cares and understands. More importantly, mentoring can help cement an active, healthy lifestyle that nourishes self-esteem and confidence.

What is Go Girls? Go Girls! is a group mentoring program promoting active living, balanced eating and positive self image. This program is designed to serve girls aged 11 to 14 years old and is facilitated by female mentors aged 19 to 25. There are seven total sessions and each session is two hours in length. Every session is based on the three primary themes of the program, and includes fun games, activities and discussions. Sessions are interactive and encourage group participation and cooperation.

Program Benefits Studies have shown that girls are three times more likely than boys to have a negative body image and to engage in dieting or unhealthy eating behaviours. It is also argued that girls have inadequate access to sport and physical activity programs. In addition, studies suggest that the physical activity levels of young women significantly decline once they reach the adolescent ages of 11 to 14, with this age group often struggling with issues regarding eating and body image. By focusing on physical activity, healthy living, and positive self-image. Go Girls! encourages girls to be more physically active, increase their self-confidence and knowledge, creates healthy patterns of eating and sleeping, and establishes positive attitudes and behaviours that can last a lifetime.
