1. Tourist Arrivals

From 1st January 2021 to 28th July 2021, a total of 600,252 tourists arrived in the Maldives.

The top source market for the tourist arrival was Russia with 140,824 arrivals, followed by India with 99,643 tourist arrivals. Germany stood third with 33,361 tourist arrivals. Other top source markets include Ukraine, USA, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, United Kingdom, Spain and Romania. As the Maldives recovers from the COVID-19 situa�on, tourist arrivals to the Maldives gradually picks up and bounce back. On 16th July 2021 with a total of 555,006 tourists arrivals reached and exceeded the 2020 annual total of 555,494. By 28th July the total arrivals to the Maldives exceeded 600,000 with an increase of 56.2% compared with that of 2020. Arrivals is gaining momentum in July as COVID-19 restric�ons eased and borders reopened for South Asian markets. Daily average increased from 1,827 during the month of June to 3,204 by the end of 4th week of the July.

While major markets such as Russia and India made full recovery with strong posi�ve growth rates, new markets emerged from the European Region and the Middle East. As of 21st July 2021, top ten source markets to the Maldives were, Russia with 23.5% shares, India with 16.6% shares, Germany with 5.6% shares, Ukraine with 4.3% shares, U.S.A with 4.1% shares, Saudi Arabia with 2.9%, Kazakhstan with 2.8% shares, United Kingdom with 2.6% shares, Spain with 2.1% shares and Romania with 2.0% shares.

Minister of Tourism Par�cipates in Discussions with Airline Operators in Russia The Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom made an official visit to Russia on an invita�on by the Resort Life Holidays, a Maldivian Tour Operator based in Russia. He was accompanied by Execu�ve Director of the Ministry, Thoyyib Shaheem. During this trip he par�cipated in mee�ngs with airline operators in Russia and Eastern European Region. Discussions during these mee�ngs were focused on increasing direct connec�vity between these des�na�ons and the Maldives. Minister Dr. Mausoom signified the importance of Russia as a source market to the Maldives and highlighted the efforts done by Resort Life and travel trade partners in Russia to promote Maldives as an ideal post-pandemic des�na�on to the market.

Maldives Included in Abu Dhabi’s “Green List” Des�na�ons

The Maldives has been included in the updated “Green List” des�na�ons of Abu Dhabi which was issued on 28th July 2021 by the Department of Culture and Tourism of Abu Dhabi. Vaccinated travelers from these des�na�ons upon arrival at Abu Dhabi Interna�onal Airport will be exempt from mandatory quaran�ne measures a�er landing in Abu Dhabi and will be required to undergo PCR tes�ng, as well as another PCR test on day 6. Unvaccinated travelers arriving from these countries are exempt from mandatory quaran�ne but will also need to undergo PCR tes�ng on arrival, as well as two further PCR tests on day 6 and 12.

Travelers from des�na�ons not in the “Green List” are required to quaran�ne for seven days, with a follow-up PCR test on Day 6. Visit Maldives Launches Campaign to Promote Maldives in Indonesia Visit Maldives conducts a joint campaign with Leverate Media in order to promote Maldives as the most desired des�na�on and as a safe haven targe�ng the Indonesian market. The one-month long campaign will promote Maldives u�lizing Google and Youtube adver�sing.

Under the campaign with Leverate Media, video adver�sements featuring the serene sca�ered islands of Maldives will appear on Youtube. Maldives will also be adver�sed on the Google Display Network, a group of more than 2 million websites, videos, and apps featuring Google Ads. Visit Maldives Commences Joint Campaign with Tripzilla

Visit Maldives commences a joint campaign with TripZilla to make the Maldives as the top choice des�na�on in the SEA market. The 5 month-long branding campaign, star�ng from July �ll December, will make use of a variety of digital marke�ng components to promote Maldives as one of the most preferred safe haven des�na�ons in the world.

Under the campaign, ar�cles on the sought-a�er tourism products and the unique experiences of Maldives will be published on Tripzilla’s main website reaching audiences in the Southeast Asian market. In addi�on to the ar�cles, a video presenta�on featuring the serene sca�ered islands and the unique geography of Maldives will be showcased through TripZilla.

Visit Maldives Par�cipates in Ultra Summit 2021 in USA Visit Maldives par�cipates in the Luxury Travel Advisors ULTRA Summit for 2021 to maintain the des�na�on presence and promote the Maldives as a unique luxury travel des�na�on in the United States market. This exclusive B2B event will be held from 25th to 27th July in Texas, United States. Luxury Travel Advisor’s ULTRA Summit is one of the most successful events for the luxury travel segment in the USA. This B2B event is for companies that offer luxury products, who wish to establish new contacts and strengthen old �es in the USA markets. This is the first physical fair that Visit Maldives has taken part in for this year targe�ng the US market.
