NEPAL - RISING TO NEW HEIGHTS

sliver of golden sun lights up the horizon as the brightly-clad workers move through the tea fields, their large baskets suspended behind them from colorful headbands that balance neatly on their A heads. As the sun welcomes them, they pluck the tea leaves, their graceful movements showing their deep connection with their work and their land. Tea is more than a commodity in ; it is a way of life. The green leaves from this farm will be combined with the leaves from many other farms and transported to a factory for processing. The majority of tea grown in Nepal comes from small farms, most under 3 acres. For many years, the leaves were sent over the border into to be processed and sold as part of tea lots. It was only in the latter part of the 20th century that tea picked in the fields of Nepal was sold under its own country’s name. But, why is this so and how did the tea plant originally come to Nepal?

August 14, 2018

A Note to our Valued Customers: There are twenty-four new teas in our fall catalog, including the eight Nepal teas that are featured in our Upton Tea Quarterly article. We are also introducing a natural flavored Lemon Drop (NF30 on page 29), an extraordinary tea that has taken us a year to develop. This tea has a robust lemon flavor, making it a wonderful cup - hot or iced. For those customers looking for a new decaffeinated tea, we also have a decaffeinated Lemon black tea (NX30 on page 44) available now. The overwhelming response to our Colombian teas has inspired us to introduce a Colombian Breakfast Blend tea (TSA6 on page 32). Exclusively blended for us by the Bitaco Tea Estate, this new Colombian offering has a rich, distinctive flavor that takes milk well. We are confident that you will enjoy these outstanding new teas as much as we do. Located less than one mile from our office in Holliston, Massachusetts, Boston Honey is a small company that has been in business for twenty-two years. Last May, we received an e-mail from one of our customers who suggested that we collaborate with this local honey company. We thought it was an excellent idea and we are now selling Boston Honey’s Massachusetts Raw Wildflower Honey. Boston Honey’s Massachusetts apiaries spread across the farms of Concord, the revolutionary battlefields of Lincoln, the community centers in Weston as well as other public park lands. The abundant, local floral sources in those areas produce a honey with a unique, complex flavor, perfect for enjoying with our teas. You may find our Raw Wildflower Honey listed on our website (page 4). We are excited to share our new website features with you. You can now store and manage multiple credit cards in your online account. In addition, there is a “Buy Now” function that allows customers to submit their orders in 3 to 4 clicks. These enhancements will simplify the online ordering process and improve your experience on our website. Another function that was recently added is an email notification for out-of-stock teas. If, by chance, a tea is temporarily out of stock, customers can sign up to be notified by email when the tea becomes available. You may have noticed that we are selling the tin size variation for only our bestselling teas now. We have now added the functionality to quickly add an empty tin and extra tea label to your purchase of a single packet size. This will allow you to package any of our teas into a tin, at your convenience. In the coming weeks, this feature will expand from a small list of teas to a larger variety of teas. At Upton Tea Imports, we are always working to improve and make your tea experience with us as enjoyable as possible. One last note: Upton Tea Imports will be celebrating our 30th anniversary next year. We are planning a few surprises that we know you will enjoy. Stay tuned for more details that will appear in our winter catalog.

Thank you for your valued business.

FOR THOSE WHO ENJOY RECEIVING OUR NEWSLETTER nlike mainstream mail-order companies, we do not flood the mail with catalogs; only four issues of the Upton Tea Quarterly are mailed each year. We only send a catalog to customers who Urequest it and who order with some regularity, which can be as little as once every two years. New callers who do not specify that we send only one catalog will receive approximately six catalogs over an eighteen month period. Those who place at least one order during that period will continue to receive the Quarterly. There have been a few instances where customers have been ordering regularly and suddenly stop receiving our Quarterly, even though they prefer to continue receiving it. The simple example is where a customer has moved and not notified us of their change of address. Normally, bulk mailings do not receive forwarding service from the U.S. Post Office. A customer who establishes a new web account will be automatically added to the mailing list for our printed catalog. If you prefer to not be on our mailing list, please call our Customer Service department during normal business hours (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm EST) if you have any questions.

PACKAGING OPTIONS Please note that we personalize the labels on our packets of tea, unless you request that we not do so. The default name on the packet label is the ship-to recipient. Any text, up to 36 characters, may be substituted for the recipient’s name. There is no limit for personalization. Our teas are offered in sample quantities as well as a range of packet sizes and optional tin. The smallest size packet is referred to as a single packet or standard packet. In most cases we pack the standard packet with 125 grams (4.4 ounces). The gram weights in our price list are indicated in the columns to the right of the tea header as indicated below. The single packet size may also be available in a plug-top British style tea tin at $2.00 above the single packet price. Tins contain the same net weight as that listed in the column immediately to the left of the “In Tin” column. We also offer extra large (-H) packet sizes and jumbo (-K) packets in some cases. Note that packets are heat-sealed to protect freshness. Single- and double-size packets are resealable with a convenient zip-lock closure.

WEIGHTS OF MOST TEAS Large-leaf teas are packed in smaller quantities, depending on the boldness of the leaf. Thus, a standard packet may contain 100 grams or less (refer to the headers above the price). We package teas in multiples of 2, 4 and 8 times the standard packet size. The label on the front of the packet lists the actual net weight.

WEIGHTS OF BULKIER TEAS Our teas are hand-packed by us in a variety of sizes. Larger packet prices reflect the savings incurred by us in labor, as well as reduced margins for large quantity purchases. Savings will vary depending on the scarcity and cost of the tea. When ordering the largest size packets, we recommend dispensing a portion of the tea into a small canister which can serve for daily use. Remember to roll the top of the larger bag tightly to remove excess air before sealing to minimize air exposure and maintain freshness. We suggest ordering only the amount of tea which will be consumed in three months.

Each item has the sample price in the left price column (with an “S” suffix for an item code). Sample weights are approximately 12% of a single packet weight. This sample pricing policy will allow you to try all of our teas at a reasonable price.

ICED TEA SELECTIONS Virtually any tea can be served iced for a refreshing summer beverage. Many of our customers enjoy iced tea the year round as an alternative to bottled beverages. An excellent way to steep iced tea is the traditional hot tea method, using twice the normal quantity of tea leaves. The steeped concentrate can then be poured over ice when ready to serve. Page 44 Upton Tea Quarterly Fall, 2018 DECAFFEINATED TEAS AND TISANES & INFUSIONS PREMIUM DECAFFEINATED TEAS All processes used for tea are problematic, and remove flavor as well as caffeine. Teas flavored after decaffeination, such as Earl Grey, will be less compromised, since the added flavoring oils constitute the dominant flavor component. Even these, however, lack some of the character that tea drinkers appreciate. There is one company that is approaching this problem in a unique way. They start with grades of tea that would ordinarily be considered too good for the flavor-robbing decaffeination process. They then sort the final product to eliminate most of the smaller leaf particles that decaffeination produces. Predictably, the result is a superior final product.

TEA THERMOMETER Using the right water temperature is important when preparing a cup of tea. We have created an easy-to-use, three-color temperature circle, to indicate the correct temperature for steeping tea. The circle is divided into three ranges: Green Tea: 140-180°F Green Zone Oolong Tea: 180-200°F Blue Zone Black Tea: Up to 212°F Black Zone At Upton Tea Imports, we find it easiest to use an electric kettle to heat the water to the boiling point, then place the stem of the thermometer into the kettle between the lid and rim, and monitor the temperature until it lowers to the desired level. Caution: Let the water cool a bit before removing the lid of a kettle and use extreme caution to avoid exposure to hot steam. Note that the steeping temperature on our packets is a recommendation only. You may find that certain teas are more suited to your palate when steeped at a higher or lower temperature. Vary the steeping temperature and length of time to achieve the desired strength and flavor profile that optimizes your enjoyment. As always, there is no substitute for experimentation. When using this thermometer for other purposes, do not expose the dial face and plastic lens to high heat. Note that calibration may be required occasionally to make sure the boiling point matches the appropriate temperature for boiling water at your altitude. The adjustment nut at the base of the thermometer dial will rotate the dial face for simple calibration adjustments. Made in China. Item AR21 Tea Thermometer Price: $6.00 MA Price: $6.38
