Folia Follies, Performance Notes and Lesson Activity by Julie Goldberg
Folia Follies is a theme and variations based on the Renaissance chord pattern of the Folias de España. Folia Follies is written to accommodate a wide range of guitarists, from beginning to advanced players.
Guitar I is the most difficult part. It employs notes in the higher positions, accidentals (g and f sharp), dotted rhythms, and sixteenth note runs.
Guitar II plays notes exclusively on the first five frets of the guitar. Accidentals (g and f sharp), dotted rhythms, and sixteenth notes are played.
Guitar III is the easiest part and employs notes only on the first three strings, frets 1-3. No accidentals are used. Rhythms include eighth notes and dotted quarters followed by an eighth.
Guitar IV carries the bass line. All notes are played on the first five frets of the guitar. Accidentals, and dotted rhythms are used.
Guitar V is the rhythm part and can be played by a guitarist who does not read musical notation. Am, E, G, C chords and percussive techniques are played by this part.
All parts include the use of natural harmonics and simple strumming patterns.
Parts for guitars 1, 2, 3, and 4 are available in notation and tablature. Guitar 5 is a rhythm guitar part and is written out using chord charts only. Folia Follies, Performance Notes and Lesson Activity by Julie Goldberg
