BLESSED FATHER’S DAY “I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble. Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.” Proverbs 4:11-13

From the Desk of Father Raaser

Happy Father’s Day! Thank you to the men who are trying to be good fathers, loving the mother of your children, teaching your children to be virtuous and responsible future adults.

Fatherhood is difficult; I think the most difficult thing a man can do. It is in fatherhood, that a man will be transformed into a better man and do more important work than was possible before. Fatherhood is a good, but it is a difficult good, which is only achieved by effort and sacrifice.

The opposite of a good father is devastating, especially for children.

In our country today, more than 20 million kids or 1 in 3 live in a household without their father, according to a recent Census Bureau report. In America, only about 69 percent of kids live in a home with two parents. In 2014, the World Family Map project looked at the 49 countries that make up the vast majority of the world's population. The percentage of children who live with two parents is 88 percent in the Netherlands, 85 percent in the Philippines and Indonesia, 83 percent in Germany, 78 percent in Canada, 76 percent in Nigeria, 74 percent in Ethiopia, and 72 percent in Bolivia. With our 69 percent, the United States sits in 32nd place. We beat out Uganda. Barely.

Fatherhood is one of the victims of efforts to redefine marriage, family and human sexuality through laws, school curricula, and pop culture. The single worst thing men have done over the last two generations is to abandon their families.

It is critical to the happiness of our children, the continuation of our families, and the future of society to work to rebuild a culture that encourages men and women to marry and that supports them in their marriage and in the challenges of motherhood and fatherhood. We need to reclaim solid family life, virtues, and true moral values. Most, if not all of our societal ills: mass shootings, sexual abuse, the degradation of women, lack of respect, murder, suicide, you name it— go back to family life, or lack thereof.

In 1994, the Swiss discovered what, for the time, was a surprising fact about church attendance: the practice of faith into subsequent generations was determined overwhelmingly by the participation of fathers.

If a mother is a regular churchgoer and the father is not, only 2% of their children will attend church regularly. If, however, both parents practice the faith, that 37% of children will grow up to be regular church-goers and 41% will become irregular church goers. Bizarrely, when the situation is reversed—father practices and mother does not—the exact opposite happens: the number of children who grow up to become regular church-goers rises to 44%!

There’s a sense that the image of a mother relates to the home and childhood and the image of the father to the world and adulthood. The study from Switzerland concludes that if the father doesn’t participate in worship, then worship becomes associated with the mother alone, creating a lingering sense that it’s part of the home and youth left behind when we transition to adulthood. The plain truths of traditional roles can’t be dismissed. It may be socially conditioned, but that doesn’t make them less ingrained into our psyche.

It is wonderful to see mom and especially the dads and their children come to Mass, it gives us all hope. Have a wonderful day with the family.
