General Information • Landmarks Beyond the obvious crowd-pleasers, New York City landmarks Guggenheim (Map 17) is one of New York’s most unique are super-subjective. One person’s favorite cobblestoned and distinctive buildings (apparently there’s some art alley is some developer’s idea of prime real estate. Bits of old inside, too). The Cathedral of St. John the Divine (Map New York disappear to differing amounts of fanfare and 18) has a very medieval vibe and is the world’s largest make room for whatever it is we’ll be romanticizing in the unfinished cathedral—a much cooler destination than the future. Ain’t that the circle of life? The landmarks discussed eternally crowded St. Patrick’s Cathedral (Map 12). are highly idiosyncratic choices, and this list is by no means complete or even logical, but we’ve included an array of places, from world famous to little known, all worth visiting. Great Public Buildings Once upon a time, the city felt that public buildings should inspire civic pride through great architecture. Coolest Skyscrapers Head downtown to view City Hall (Map 3) (1812), Most visitors to New York go to the top of the Empire State Tweed Courthouse (Map 3) (1881), Jefferson Market Building (Map 9), but it’s far more familiar to New Yorkers Courthouse (Map 5) (1877—now a library), the Municipal from afar—as a directional guide, or as a tip-off to obscure Building (Map 3) (1914), and a host of other court- holidays (orange & white means it’s time to celebrate houses built in the early 20th century.

  • 130 West 57Th Street Studio Building, 130 West 57Th Street, (Aka 126-132 West 57Th Street), Manhattan
Landmarks Preservation Commission October 19, 1999, Designation List 310 LP-2042 130 West 57th Street Studio Building, 130 West 57th Street, (aka 126-132 West 57th Street), Manhattan. Built, 1907-08, Pollard & Steinam, architects. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1009, Lot 46. On July 13, 1999, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the 130 West 57th Street Studio Building and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 2). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. There were six speakers in support of designation, including the owner of the building, representatives of the Landmarks Conservancy, the Society for the Architecture of the City, and the Historic Districts Council. There were no speakers in opposition to designation. In addition, the Commission has received letters from Assemblyman Richard N. Gottfried and from Community Board 5 in support of designation. Summary Built in 1907-08 to provide living and working facilities for artists, the studio building at 130 West 57th Street is a rare surviving example of this unusual building type, and a reminder of the early twentieth century period when West 57th Street was a center of artistic activities. Designed by architects Pollard & Steinam, who had previously created several artists' studio cooperatives on West 67th Street, this building profited from the experience of the developers and builders who had worked on the earlier structures. The artists' studio building type was developed early in the twentieth century, and was an important step toward the acceptance of apartment living for wealthy New Yorkers.

  • Chapter 4: Social Conditions
Chapter 4: Social Conditions A. INTRODUCTION AND METHODOLOGY This chapter addresses a variety of issues that support social conditions, including population and housing characteristics, community facilities and open spaces, and neighborhood character. The discussion of social conditions considers the entire MESA study area (depicted in Figure 3-1 in Chapter 3, above) with particular focus on the project corridor—the routes proposed for the various project alternatives—where the greatest potential for change would occur. Because none of the project alternatives have the potential to change social conditions in the secondary study area, where Build Alternatives 1 and 2 would add service along an existing subway line, this analysis is of the primary study area only. The analysis was conducted by first compiling existing data for population and housing, com- munity facilities and open spaces, and neighborhood character. The source for the population and housing data is the 1990 Census of Population and Housing. The inventory of community facilities is based on Community District Needs (1997) for Manhattan’s Community Boards, the Department of Parks and Recreation’s Property Lists (dated November 4, 1996), supplementary information provided by the various Community Boards within the study area, and the informa- tion gathered for the analysis of land use, zoning, and public policy in Chapter 3. The assessment of neighborhood character is based on information gathered for other chapters of this document, particularly including the analyses of land use (Chapter 3) and visual and aesthetic considerations (Chapter 6). After assessing the existing conditions in the study area, the expected changes in the future are considered, based on information compiled in Chapter 3.

ARCHITECTURAL AND CULTURAL Map &Guide FRIENDS of the Upper East Side Historic Districts Architectural and Cultural Map and Guide Founded in 1982, FRIENDS of the Upper East Side Historic Districts is an independent, not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to preserving the architectural legacy, livability, and sense of place of the Upper East Side by monitoring and protecting its seven Historic Districts, 131 Individual Landmarks, and myriad significant buildings. Walk with FRIENDS as we tour some of the cultural and architectural sites that make the Upper East Side such a distinctive place. From elegant apartment houses and mansions to more modest brownstones and early 20th-century immigrant communities, the Upper East Side boasts a rich history and a wonderfully varied built legacy. With this guide in hand, immerse yourself in the history and architecture of this special corner of New York City. We hope you become just as enchanted by it as we are. FRIENDS’ illustrated Architectural and Cultural Map and Guide includes a full listing of all of the Upper East Side’s 131 Individual Landmarks. You can find the location of these architectural gems by going to the map on pages 2-3 of the guide and referring to the numbered green squares. In the second section of the guide, we will take you through the history and development of the Upper East Side’s seven Historic Districts, and the not landmarked, though culturally and architecturally significant neighborhood of Yorkville. FRIENDS has selected representative sites that we feel exemplify each district’s unique history and character. Each of the districts has its own color-coded map with easy-to-read points that can be used to find your own favorite site, or as a self-guided walking tour the next time you find yourself out strolling on the Upper East Side.
