Football is the world’s most popular ball game in numbers of participants and spectators. Simple in its principal rules and essential equipment, the sport can be played almost anywhere, from official football playing fields (pitches) to gymnasiums, streets, school playgrounds, parks, or beaches. The Origin The contemporary history of the world's favorite game spans more than 100 years. It all began in 1863 in England, when rugby football and association football branched off on their different courses and the Football Association in England was formed - becoming the sport's first governing body. Football in India Football is India's second most popular sport, next to the game of cricket. Kabaddi and field hockey are also popular. Traditionally it has enjoyed popularity in West Bengal, Goa, Kerala, Odisha, and north-eastern India, especially Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. India's current top domestic league, I-League, was formed in 2007 in an attempt to professionalize domestic football and in 2013 the Indian Super League was formed with 8 teams to promote Indian football to the country and world.

  • World Vision and Football Unite for One Goal
MEDIA RELEASE For immediate release Tuesday 25 March, 2014 World Vision and Football unite for One Goal World Vision Australia and the Football Federation Australia (FFA) are today launching One Goal – a partnership that will use football as a catalyst to improve the nutrition of children in Australia and across Asia. One Goal is an important initiative between World Vision and the FFA that will see the organisations collaborating together on how the aims and priorities of One Goal can translate into an enduring relationship between the organisations focussing on child wellbeing here in Australia. Football fans in Australia can join 1.4 billion football fans across Asia to raise money, create awareness and drive change at a government and community level to increase the number of children who survive and thrive in a healthy life. Australia hosts Asia’s largest football tournament – the AFC Asian Cup – in January 2015 and the Local Organising Committee will use the event to kick start the One Goal campaign in Australia. The ‘Fuelling Asia’s footballers for the future’ report - also being launched today as part of the campaign - estimates that approximately 200 million children across Asia are affected by chronic malnutrition. One Goal will also aim to improve the health of the 19 million children affected by increasing over-nutrition (obesity). Both malnutrition and obesity are results of poor nutrition and prevent children participating in a healthy, active life. With the support of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015 Local Organising Committee and regional partners Royal DSM, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and Asian Football Development Project (AFCP), the One Goal campaign seeks to leverage the power and reach of the world game to improve the lives of malnourished children living in the 47 countries where the AFC is present.

  • The China Question in Football in Australia David Rowe, Keith D
The China Question in Football in Australia David Rowe, Keith D. Parry and Bonnie Pang Introduction: Geopolitics and Football In the 21st century, China became Australia’s largest trading partner (both export and import), and a major (though by no means the largest) investor in the country.1 Following the China- Australia Free Trade Agreement, in operation since December 2015, Australia has become the second largest recipient of Chinese outbound direct investment and China is now one of the country’s top investors.2 Chinese immigration has been prominent in Australia since the mid- nineteenth century, but it is only in recent years that the country (since 1997 incorporating, of course, the former British colony of Hong Kong) has become the largest single source of permanent new migrants to Australia3. Australia’s principal strategic ally, the US, is its second largest trading partner, but when two-way investment is taken into account, the US remains Australia’s largest economic partner.4 Australia, therefore, is in various ways caught between the dominant world power and its main imperial rival, while retaining a significant historically-conditioned postcolonial linkage with Britain. Its regionally-oriented turn towards Asia has also meant that Australia must carefully negotiate multiple relationships with major Asian powers such as Japan, Korea, Indonesia and India, as well as with the 43 other countries of varying proximity and size across the continent. Australia also has affiliations and responsibilities in the western Pacific across Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. Football (still frequently called soccer in Australia, despite the efforts of its governing body, Football Federation Australia) has necessarily been implicated in these major geo-political, economic and national-cultural matters.
