Thesis submitted to MANIPAL ACADEMY OF HIGHER EDUCATION (MAHE – Deemed University) RATHEESH RADHAKRISHNAN CENTRE FOR THE STUDY OF CULTURE AND SOCIETY (Affiliated to MAHE- Deemed University) BANGALORE- 560011 JULY 2006 To my parents KM Rajalakshmy and M Radhakrishnan For the spirit of reason and freedom I was introduced to… This work is dedicated…. The object was to learn to what extent the effort to think one’s own history can free thought from what it silently thinks, so enable it to think differently. Michel Foucault. 1985/1990. The Use of Pleasure: The History of Sexuality Vol. II, trans. Robert Hurley. New York: Vintage: 9. … in order to problematise our inherited categories and perspectives on gender meanings, might not men’s experiences of gender – in relation to themselves, their bodies, to socially constructed representations, and to others (men and women) – be a potentially subversive way to begin? […]. Of course the risks are very high, namely, of being misunderstood both by the common sense of the dominant order and by a politically correct feminism. But, then, welcome to the margins! Mary E. 1. Choose the correct statement/s about characters or makeup types of kathakali ? 1. Pacha is used to portray noble male characters like kings 2. Kathi is used for demonic characters 3. kari for arrogant and evil characters (a) 1 only (b) 2, 3 (c) 1, 2 (d) 1, 2, 3 Correct Choice: (a) Solution: Mainly there are five makeup types in kathakali; which are pacha, kathi, kari thadi, and minukku. Here the statement about pacha is correct. The pacha with its predominant green colour is used to portray noble male characters like kings and divine beings. These characters have a mix of satvic (pious) and rajsik (kingly) nature. The satvic element facilitates immense possibility for the artiste to explicate his acting talents. Characters like Lord Krishna and Lord Rama are examples for pacha . Kathi characters are arrogant and evil but have a streak of valour in them. Though their make-up is basically green, denoting that they are high born, a red mark like an upturned moustache or knife is painted on the cheek to show that they are evil. They also have white knobs on the tips of their noses and on their foreheads, which add to their evil nature. Ravana, the demon king is a typical kathi character in Kathakali. Kari is used for demonic characters, portraying the most gruesome figures on the Kathakali stage. Their faces are jet-black with dotted red and white markings on them. Minukku vesham symbolizes gentleness and high spiritual qualities (like saints), which are in sharp contrast to the preceding four classes.

  • Chapter 1 Introduction: the Sexual Figures of Kerala
Chapter 1 Introduction: The Sexual Figures of Kerala In the last two decades, with economic liberalization and the cultural impact of globalization, there has been much celebrating of India‟s new status as an ambitious, confident nation ready to take on the global stage. Both in the national and global realm there have been debates on the many markers of India‟s „progress‟. The agreement that post-90s India has finally moved from the era of the “prohibition of the kiss” to the era of sexual liberation fits into this progress narrative. Many well-known Indian news magazines and newspapers reiterate that the new generation of globalized India is sexually permissive and does not share the prudery of the pre-90s period. Nivedita Menon and Aditya Nigam in Power and Contestation: India Since 1989, argue that the new economies of desire and fluidity of sexuality are linked to the “unshackling of the imagination” (Nigam and Menon 2007: 85) due to the economic, technological, political and media-related shifts in the post-90s period. A 2006 print advertisement for tourism projects Kerala, a state in Southern India, as the ideal backdrop to kindle the fire of passion. This glossy packaging of sexual desire participates in the new liberatory aesthetics of sexualized images in global India. 1 Figure 1. Kerala Tourism Development Corporation advertisement: “Showers of Passion, Monsoon Honeymoon Holidays” (http://adoholik.com/2008/02/18/kerala-tourism-monsoon/) „Kerala, God‟s Own Country‟, as the blurb in the right-hand corner proclaims, beckons the urban tourist to discover sexual passion within its scenic landscape.

  • GEAC] Ministry of Environment & Forests Paryavaran Bhawan, CGO Complex Lodhi Road, New Delhi
To July 16, 2006 Shri Bir Singh Parsheera Chairperson, Genetic Engineering Approval Committee [GEAC] Ministry of Environment & Forests Paryavaran Bhawan, CGO Complex Lodhi Road, New Delhi Dear Shri Parsheera Sub: Feedback on Bt Brinjal – biosafety & beyond Sir, by now you would have received the initial feedback provided to the Minister for Environment & Forests with a copy marked to you, on June 15th 2006, on the issue of Bt Brinjal and its very need. We are annexing that response to this letter for your ready reference [Annexure 1]. We would like to first record our serious objection to multi-locational limited field trials being conducted in various locations in the open environment, in farmers’ fields without biosafety being cleared, without adequate monitoring and containment capabilities and very often, in violation of farmers’ rights. No liability has been fixed for biosafety violations pointed out earlier, giving a clear message that biosafety is not the regulators’ primary concern at all, though the GEAC has been created, constituted and allowed to function expressly for that. The following is the collective feedback from the Coalition for GM-Free India which touches upon the earlier-made points even as it includes newer feedback on the biosafety testing protocols that have been adopted in the case of Bt Brinjal and the results of the tests. 1. We repeat that there is no need for Bt Brinjal to be introduced. This is not something that farmers have demanded and almost all major farmers’ organizations of the country have already rejected the proposal of entry of Bt Brinjal even if it is in the form of field trials and seed production, whether in the public sector or in the private sector.
