Do prepare a positive, simple case statement including your strengths, plans and strategy 22 for securing resources.

Do ask boldly. My vice president for development and I have a clear job description for him. 33 It is in the form of one sentence. Here it is: “Get the money.” I have no problem understand- ing that job description, and evaluation requires a fairly simple framework! We never have apologized for taking the time of busy men, and we never have failed to tell them the purpose of our visit. If fellowship is what you want, stay at home and visit with your spouse. If money is what you are after, tell your prospect that is what you want.

Do relate meaningfully your donor’s participation with the larger programmatic objectives 44 of your institution. That is where the heart of his strongest motivation lies.

Don’t look for your institutional salvation to fall miraculously from some distant sky. Take 55 your shovel in hand and start digging your own gold mine.
