Gavin captured the children’s attention and imagination. The children read books to a buddy in their mixed-age house groups. As a result of these two authors visiting us, the junior class wrote two books which were bound into a class book. The first book We were privileged to have four authors come and speak to us. was about their dogs. The second book was a continuation of Gavin Bishop's book Mrs McGinty and the Bizarre Plant. The children wrote about what they thought would happen when Mrs McGinty woke up in the morning and saw a seedling growing. Children who had not previously written many sentences for a story suddenly were keen to write a longer story. Lastly, we had two authors from Auckland who came as part of Storylines National Festival Story Tour. Maria Gill, winner of many book awards, shared with the junior class excerpts from a number of her non-fiction books to the junior class. She had some soft toys: horse, camel, Caesar the bulldog from her book ANZAC Animals, as well as a baby and adult albatross from her book Toroa’s Journey. -

Michx are recognised in the New Zealand mycobiota, viz: P. adscendens, P. albata, P. atrostriata, P. caesia, P. crispa, P. dubia, P. erumpens, P. integrata, P. jackii, P. nubila, P. poncinsii, P. tribacia, P. trib- acoides, and P. undulata. Descriptions of each taxon are given, together with a key and details of biogeography, chemistry, distribution, and ecology. Physcia tenuisecta Zahlbr., is synonymised with Hyperphyscia adglutinata, and Physcia stellaris auct. is deleted from the New Zealand mycobiota. Physcia atrostriata, P. dubia, P. integrata, and P. nubila are recorded from New Zealand for the first time. A list of excluded taxa is appended. It is an area dominated by agriculture, with a mixture of cropping and grazing, both irrigated and non-irrigated. This report presents the results from a number investigations conducted in 2004 to create a snapshot of nitrate concentrations in groundwater across the Ashburton-Hinds plain. It then examines data that have been collected since 2004 to update the conclusions drawn from the 2004 data. In 2004, nitrate nitrogen concentrations were measured in groundwater samples from 121 wells on the Ashburton-Hinds plain. The concentrations ranged from less than 0.1 milligram per litre (mg/L) to more than 22 mg/L. The highest concentrations were measured in the Tinwald area, within an area approximately 3 km wide and 11 km long where concentrations were commonly greater than the maximum acceptable value (MAV) of 11.3 mg/L set by the Ministry of Health. -

I am a past Chairman of the New Zealand Rafting Association (now the New Zealand Rivers Association; having held the position for over ten years) and am still currently on the executive holding a portfolio dealing with Maritime New Zealand issues. I am the director of Hidden Valleys (NZ) Ltd, which is an adventure tourism company established in 1999 and based at Peel Forest near the Rangitata River. It specialises in running many of the more remote rivers around New Zealand and largely with a focus on multi day trips. 3. I am a Sports Fitness and Recreation Industry Training Organisation (SFRITO)-registered assessor for raft guiding, white water rescue, river risk management and weather reading. I helped develop the New Zealand Raft Guide Licensing System. I am currently one of the four registered Senior Assessor Mentors in New Zealand that is put forward by the Industry, and I am responsible for sign off of assessors within the Industry. I have been involved with accident investigation for Maritime New Zealand and also in the role of an expert witness for the defence in the Maritime New Zealand prosecution where a river guide lost his life on the Rangitikei River. -

On behalf of the Canterbury Mayoral Forum we would like to thank Government Ministers, our steering group, our officials and consultants, and all stakeholders and members of the public who have supported us in developing this strategy. This document is a considerable update on the draft strategy (published in September 2009), and summarises the overall approach and the delivery models we have adopted for the sustainable management and development of the region’s water resources in the years ahead. In the last decade pressure on Canterbury’s water resource has increased significantly and with it has emerged a highly adversarial approach to allocation and management, infrastructure provision, and related land management practices which has exacerbated the situation leading to sub-optimal outcomes. It is not in the best interests of anyone in Canterbury for this situation to continue. The work done in compiling this strategy has demonstrated there is a better way forward, based on collaboration and integrated management that will maximise the opportunities for the environment, economy and community of Canterbury in the years ahead. Consultation with stakeholders and the general public earlier this year has demonstrated there is a strong support for this initiative. The Ministers of Agriculture and Environment have been closely engaged throughout the development of the strategy and have given their support to the strategy development exercise and its general thrust. -

Barker2 1 GNS Science, PO Box 30-368, Lower Hutt 5040, New Zealand 2 Consulting Geologist, PO Box 54-094, The Marina, Bucklands Beach, Auckland 2144, New Zealand ABSTRACT: New Zealand has been a signifi cant producer of minerals and coal since early European settlement in the mid-19th century, and of hydrocarbons since 1970. Current production consists of oil, gold and silver, high quality (bituminous) coal, ironsand and specialised industrial minerals such as halloysite china clay for export, and a range of minerals and rocks for domestic use that are fundamental to New Zealand’s economy and infrastructure. The latter include aggregate for road making and construction (concrete aggregate and cement), coal for use by industry and electricity generation, and limestone for agriculture, cement making, and industry. Small quantities of diatomite, dolomite, perlite, pumice, serpentinite, and zeolite are also produced mainly for domestic markets. Other commodities that have been produced in the past include antimony, chromium, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, phosphate, platinum, sulphur, tin, tungsten, and zinc. New Zealand has well-documented potential for the discovery of a wide range of minerals and of petroleum, both onshore and offshore. Exploration is essential for converting this resource potential to wealth-creating assets. The resource-related industries are signifi cant economic contributors, but New Zealand’s resource potential remains to be realised. Mineral resources are created by natural processes and are generally described as non-renewable, implying they are fi nite, but many minerals (metals in particular) have been produced for several thousand years.
