To review that career sequence: the elite decathlete won bronze at the 2013 IAAF World Championships; gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, silver at the 2015 IAAF World Championships; gold at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto; and bronze at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He won the prestigious Hypo-Meeting in Gotzsis, Austria, in both 2013 and 2016. So, following the Summer Games, Warner, re-committing for the quadrennial toward the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, did the counter-intuitive thing: he moved his long-time training base from London to Calgary, parted ways with the only coaches he had worked with since high school and engaged veteran multi-events coach Les Gramantik to guide his efforts.
