3rd Microfluidics Consortium

Agenda for Second Meeting MF-3.2(, )

The Third Microfluidics Consortium brings together current and future stakeholders from all positions along the value chain with a shared interest in facilitating the growth of the market for microfluidics- enabled solutions to “Grand Challenges” through better understanding of the opportunities and choices as well as building the trust/confidence necessary for collaborative implementation of solutions.

On this occasion and as agreed with members of the consortium we will have an extended format with our usual “closed” day complemented by a second “open” day with a wider agenda and where members will be able to display and promote their offerings to an invited audience.

. October 11th 2011 (Day)

This is the second meeting of the MF-3 consortium. Theme: “Towards Personalized Medicine”. We are hosted by consortium member – a Johnson and Johnson company.

The Johnson and Johnson Companion Diagnostics Center of Excellence is a cross-enterprise integrated capability and knowledge center to support discovery, development and sales & marketing of companion diagnostics for all therapeutic areas.

Closed Session (only for members of the MF3 consortium) – October 11th

10:00am Arrivals – Note: Security at the Janssen, Beerse I site is tight and it is vital that all delegate names have been communicated to [email protected] at least 48 hours before arrival.

10:30am Welcome (Dr. Ig. Peter van Broeck Janssen/Johnson and Johnson)

10:45am MF3 Houserules and member introductions (Dr Peter Hewkin, CfBI)

11:00am Session 1 “Personalized medicine” role of microfluidics in diagnostics - Presentation 1: Janssen / Johnson and Johnson (Janine Arts) - Presentation 2: Janssen / Johnson and Johnson (Lieven Stuyver) - Presentation 3: Biocartis (Henk Stapert)

Discussion: what are the big challenges for MF here – and what might we do to help address these?

Discussion

16:00 The changing corporate landscape for microfluidics – what does it mean for the industry?

16:30 The way forward (short piece on upcoming MF3 work)

17:00 Close (Delegates return to hotel to freshen up)

Dinner (Discussion and Networking Opportunity) Hotel Restaurant Den en Heuvel In (Private Room Reserved)

19:00 Arrivals and Drinks

19:30 Dinner (over dinner we will be addressed by Professor Sabeth Verpoorte who will seed discussion)

Professor Sabeth Verpoorte has been head of the Pharmaceutical Analysis Group, Groningen Research Institute of Pharmacy, University of Groningen, since 2003, and has 20 years of experience in the Lab-on-a-chip field. In Groningen, her research focus has turned toward the development of microfluidic systems for cell- and tissue-based analysis, particle separation, and glucose analysis. She has over 70 peer-reviewed papers and 3 book chapters, and is involved in several international conference organizations and journal editorial boards.

October 12th 2011 (Day)

Open Session

We have invited an audience of 50 decision makers from all corners of the microfluidics landscape with the objective of engaging them in discussion about issues which are important to the consortium, presenting to them the capabilities of consortium members and encouraging them to join us.

Theme: Exploiting the potential of Microfluidics and Microreactors

Objectives:

- To showcase relevant microfluidic technologies - To catalyse a new European consortium focussed on larger scale synthesis/flow chemistry .. ie not always “Micro”fluidic. (sister consortium to MF3 which focuses on Diagnostics/small scale synthesis) - To link together European players across the wider Fluidics landscape by highlighting shared interests (and one day!) maybe to seed a new trade association representing their interests.

Table top demonstrations from:

Dolomite / Syrris University College London Micronit Fluimedix Diba SonyDADC EV Group Technogation

And others will be on show in the networking area

There will also be sessions in lecture hall format as follows:

10:00 start: Welcome from Janssen Pharmaceuticals

10:15 The MF3 Microfluidics Consortium (Mission, Activities, Membership) CfBI (Peter Hewkin)

10:30 Session 1 “Standards” (chaired by Henne v Heeren)

 This Session will involve a presentation of:

o the consortium’s vision for standards in microfluidics o the progress made o the contribution of some of its members to this debate.

 Followed by general discussions; we are keen on contributions from the “floor” regarding

o Arguments for (and against!) standardization o Areas where standardization might be particularly helpful and why o Other bodies involved in the standards debate to whom we might reach out.  The roles of members and non-members in shaping upcoming microfluidics standards and reasons why your organisation might wish to join us! 3

12:00 Lunch / Demos / Networking

13:30 Session 2 “Synthesis/Flow Chemistry” (chaired by Christian Holtze of BASF)

Presentations from: - BASF (Christian Holtze) - Sigma Aldrich (Stefan Gladow) - Syrris (Yann LeCoutourier)

- What we are talking about - Plan for a new FC1 Flow-Chemistry Consortium - Questions/comments

15:00 Break / Demos / Networking

15:30 Session 3 “The road to Personalized medicine and role of Microfluidics therein (chaired by Peter van Broeck)

- Why personalized medicine will happen? - Which Sectors and applications which are likely to lead? - Challenges along the way and how we deal with them? - The role of microfluidics - for diagnosis - for sensing - “Point of Care” vs “Send it back to the Lab” - Regulatory issues - Things we can do to fix these issues - Things we can do better together than we can separately.

16:30 Wrap up
