www.manchestermela.co.uk Manchester Mega Mela 2018 1 2 Manchester Mega Mela 2018 Manchester Mega Mela 2018 3 WELCOME TO ZEE MANCHESTER MEGA MELA 2018 Manchester Mega Mela is the largest celebration of South Asian arts and culture in the North of England. Music, dance, food and traditional arts and crafts bring the sights, sounds and spicy aromas of South Asia to South Manchester. This year’s Mela with its two entertainment stages, arts and crafts marquee, a large fun fair, traditional Asian food, clothes and jewellery stalls, will have something for everyone. The Main Stage Programme is being hosted and presented jointly by ZEE TV. Some of the biggest names on the UK and International Asian entertainment scene will be performing on both days. The Chai Serai Marquee, with a chai cafe and seating provisions, gives the mela- goers an opportunity to relax and enjoy a community-led stage programme of folklore, classical and contemporary dance and music. Performances by local school children are an added attraction. The Arts and Crafts Marquee offers paper craft, paranda, jewellery-making and various media and textile-based workshops, which will appeal to all ages. You can also have free henna and face-painting applied. This year’s new attractions include Manchester Mega Mela’s commissioned project DESI STREET MELA. As our main stage takes a short break, the festival field will spring into to life with street entertainment, carnival and more. Dance with our stilt walking Elephants or head over to help our ringmasters tame their Bengal Tiger. Be amazed as curiosities, puppets and beasts appear around every corner culminating in a colourful and vibrant carnival performance. You will be guaranteed to bump into creatures and desi delights of all types, while you shop till you drop at our wide selection of festival stalls and food vendors to recharge your batteries before our final main stage acts of the weekend. The largest Dhol drum in the world arrives at the Mela. Accompanied by an ensemble of Dhol drummers, this award winning show has been seen by thousands. Be prepared to be amazed as the Dhol drum twists and turns and will surprise audiences young and old. For sports lovers, the ever popular Kabaddi match and Tug of War will take place on Sunday evening between 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm. 4 Manchester Mega Mela 2018 Manchester Mega Mela 2018 5 Manchester Mega Mela 2018 5 HIGHLIGHTS OF ZEE MANCHESTER MEGA MELA 2018 MAIN STAGE The Main Stage Programme is being hosted and presented by ZEE TV. Some of the biggest names on the UK and international Asian entertainment scene will perform over both days. Artists from all 5 countries - Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka will enthral the audience with their show-stopping performances. CHAI SERAI MARQUEE The Chai Serai Marquee, with a chai cafe and seating provisions, gives the mela-goers an opportunity to relax and enjoy a community led stage programme of folklore, classical and contemporary dance and music. ARTS & CRAFT MARQUEE The Arts & Crafts Marquee is an activity centre comprising of various Arts & Crafts Workshops, amongst other activities throughout the day. This marquee is always very popular with people of all ages, as it offers free henna painting, rangoli, card making, face painting and balloon modelling. Other attractions include: Activities by Z ARTS This year Z-arts visual artists will deliver a craft Temple Bell bracelet making activity throughout the day. These handmade pieces of jewellery are musical linked craft bells that can be kept and worn at home. Paper Crafts by Taruna Shah Come and enjoy the Art of Quilling - making cards, jewellery and fridge magnets. Also craft from paper rolling and book folding plus Stone Rangoli What the Ladybird Heard by The Lowry Craft activities themed around the Lowry’s summer show of ‘What the Ladybird Heard’. You’ll be making puppets and masks. The People’s History Museum The People’s History Museum is the national museum of democracy and the home of ideas worth fighting for. Taking inspiration from the colourful banners on display in the galleries they’ll be inviting families to work together to create a giant banner inspired by the question What’s important to you?

6 Manchester Mega Mela 2018 Manchester Mega Mela 2018 7 Greetings cards by Aisha Shah With the help of Aisha Shah, you will be making greetings cards using a selection of papers, tissue, handmade made papers, ribbons, fabrics, and stick on letters and designs. Workshops by Chrissy Webster The mixed media artist Chrissy Webster will be featuring a mehndi lantern activity. It can be coloured and embellished with a variety of recycled trims and strings. Repurposing materials is an important ethical element of creativity. Henna by Asia Javed & Mehzabin Bux These henna artists will provide free henna service and create designs combining traditional and modern patterns. Applying glitter for a sparkly touch. Crafts by Manchester Libraries Manchester Central Library and Archives+ work with children, families, young people and schools to promote the library and archives and make Central Library a place people want to visit. In the craft marquee they will be making dream catchers to take home and catch your dreams. Interactive workshops by Contact Theatre CONTACT are set to take over Upper Campfield Market with their show Tipping Point which mixes aerial circus, break dance martial arts and Shaolin stick fighting. This exciting show has inspired the crafting and circus skills activities that they are bringing to the 2018 Mela. Flag making by Hannah Bold Encouraging participation and inspiring creativity, Hannah will help you to create flags of different nations. Interactive workshops by Contact Theatre Come and join Contact Theatre to explore the furry, feathered and slippery animals that live in the circus and create a character in this interactive workshop! Manchester Mega Mela 2018 7 PatternCraft by MADLAB Inspired by textile and computing heritage, PatternCraft is a make-it-yourself analogue to digital punchcard reader. It’s a tool for learning the fundamentals of computing and code, and a base for developing interactive projects. We’ll be teaching kids (and adults) the fundamentals of computing through punched paper and minecraft.

Workshops by HOME HOME is Manchester’s arts and entertainment venue for people from all walks of life to enjoy local, national and international theatre, cinema and visual art all under one roof. This year HOME will be bringing a Family Friendly activity to the Mela inspired by Films coming up in their Family Film programme. They’ll be making masks, puppets and hanging decorations inspired by animated films!

Interactive activity by Chaitali Mehta Chaitali is bringing her workshop to the MELA. You’ll be able to make all sorts of things from soft toys out of old socks to flower vases from glass jars and origami finger puppets and friendship bracelets. Something for everyone.

Rubbish Revamped Join Rubbish Revamped to get creative with stuff that normally gets thrown away. FUNFAIR The MMM Funfair provides all-round enjoyment for people of all ages! There’s a wide variety of rides to choose form, including roller coasters, slides and bumper cars. Bring your family and friends along to have a go on the exciting rides!

SPORTS For sports lovers, the TUG OF WAR and KABBADI will take place on SUNDAY between 6.00 pm to 8.00pm
