Petero Civoniceva RUGBY LEAGUE The bloke with that name! If you were to say it properly, it would be ‘thee-vo- ni-there-va’. As no Aussie commentators could possibly get their tongues around that, he became ‘siva- ni- seva’ And because even that was a challenge for some, the big man became: ‘Petrol SeventyCentsALitre’ and ‘Petero SecondReceiver’ and even ‘Fridge and Freezer’! One of the Broncos' favourite sons, Petero Civoniceva was nearly a front-row great at the Roosters after being pursued by the late Arthur Beetson. Beetson went tantalisingly close to delivering the teenaged Fiji-born player to the Bondi Junction glamour club during his long tenure as the Roosters' talent scout. But the Broncos swooped and, apart from some time at Penrith, Civoniceva went on to become a Brisbane legend. However, he looked up to Beetson as a role model and did Artie proud with his stirring performances at Origin level. Civoniceva learned from some of the best front- rowers in the modern history of the game so it was no surprise that he followed the same path to the top. He was making his way through the Broncos’ ranks when Glenn Lazarus was the leader of the pack in the mid-1990s and then it was Shane Webcke who showed the way with his disciplined approach and dedication to the cause. Civoniceva’s strength of body and mind carried him through 15 seasons at the top level and it was a tribute to his durability that he became the first individual to play State of Origin beyond his 36th birthday in 2012. Cameron Smith, Petero Civoniceva, Kurt Gidley and Nathan Hindmarsh joined us for about an Wednesday February 9 hour and spoke to the whole school in our new multi-purpose centre. They answered Whole School Assembly the children’s questions and had the chance to give away some NRL merchandise, some of which we will look to use for our Fete later in the year, and joined us for some Friday February 11 group photos (These are attached throughout this newsletter). They also took the time 8 & 9 yr old ‘A” division swim trials to stress to the children the importance of healthy eating habits and regular exercise. The morning was an exciting one for the children (and many staff – Iris Burnell Monday February 14 managed to snare a photo with Petero) and we are indebted to our Assistant Principal, 7pm—P & F Meeting Tony Barron, for his organisation of the day. Tony, through his Queensland Primary School Rugby League contacts, was able to snare this great opportunity at the end of Wednesday February 16 Yr 7—G.C Leadership Liturgy last year.

18 Niu Mana, Sport, Media and the Australian Diaspora Katerina Martina Teaiwa Katerina Teaiwa: Personal Journey I grew up on the Laucala campus of the University of the South Pacific (USP) as my mother, Joan Teaiwa, worked there as a course developer in extension services from 1980 to 2000, and my elder sister, Teresia Teaiwa, as a lecturer in history/politics from 1994 to 2000 . We took music lessons on campus from the wonderful Mr Ueta Solomona, played tennis at the USP courts, swam regularly at the USP pool, did exercise classes at the USP gym and I played on the White Fire basketball team led by USP Professor Randy Thaman and Bob Tuxon . My mother had started a ballet school in Suva in the 1980s and my sisters and I were avid dancers . In the mid-1990s, Professor Epeli Hau‘ofa was expanding the Oceania Centre for Arts and Culture and looking for artists and performers to develop their work at the centre . He introduced me to the very talented Allan Alo and together we founded the Oceania Dance Theatre (ODT) with Letava Tafuna‘i. I danced for years with Allan in various shows including USP’s early dance theatre productions, collaborating with musicians and visual artists . ODT travelled to Honolulu where I had completed my MA in Pacific Islands Studies and to Canberra where I was doing my PhD at The Australian National University (ANU). I discovered that the anthropology department had been recycling name tags on the doors for years and Epeli’s name was still there from the 1970s on the back of a label being used in the late 1990s .
