The selfish, childish Red Queen is played by . Hair and makeup for the part took three to four hours to perfect. Gentle is the good White Queen with a touch of Mona Desmond makeup for fun. The actors reported that this was a fun film to make thanks to Burton’s flare and openness. This isn’t a film for small children as it could be frightening for little people. Ray described it as visually amazing. Other adults in the theatre said it was darkly fun. I totally enjoyed the new twist on an old story. Next was the award winning German film, The White Ribbon. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards. I enjoyed this film but had to watch it twice to understand this complicated story while reading sub- titles. I would have enjoyed it much more had I understood the language. Still it was easy for me to realize why it had won so many awards. The story is set in a small German village just before World War I. A variety of unusual deaths and near death experiences haunts the village. The narrator is the young (31 year old) teacher who is touched by each strange experience until he finally leaves the village to make a life for himself. This film is part of the Sony Pictures Classics series. It will open in theatres in this area on or about March 26th. The really bad film was My Family Wedding. What made it terrible was the Black vs. Hispanic theme. Two families with children that want to marry – my daughter ain’t marrying no N-word – my son isn’t going to marry a non-American S-word. Cultures battling cultures is not my idea of entertainment. I don’t find this funny or entertaining. The players were good as was the direction. The story gets a minus grade from me – like 5X minus F. Everyone was a stereotype. This made for a boring, predict- able film. Don’t waste your time and money on something so socially demeaning. The next film I am scheduled to see as a press screening is Greenberg. I’ve heard a few good things about it so I hope to have a good report for you.
