This year started out rather strange as we experienced a rather warm & wet spring in Kentucky, very unusual to say the least. Our current weather cycle has truly been an experience not seen since 1956 according to many meteorologists. At pre- sent there are 26 states experiencing drought or extreme drought conditions, around 75% of the total land mass in the good ole Continental USA. This effect is caused by certain weather patterns called La Niña. La Niña is character- ized by unusually cold ocean temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific ocean, as compared to El Niño, which is characterized by unusually warm ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific. La Niña causes the normal jet streams to stay in the northern half of our continent which carries the rain patterns north as well. Thus, we have drought conditions in the southern portion. We have had an unusually long extended period of about 3 years in the La Niña patter so far. The El Niño patterns are supposed to return our weather to more seasonable conditions, however this pattern will not begin until late fall. Call this ‘Global Warming’ or what ever, but we have experienced this phenomena many times throughout the life span of our planet. Our economy is fragile at best, so we are sure to see higher food prices as the result of this drought. It is yet unknown of the total damage to our corn, soy bean and other crops that we depend on for our food sources. At present, it is estimated that 40% + of our corn crop in rated in very poor condition. If you are a farmer you can see this immediately Weather Predictions, Old Farmers Almanac (Ohio Valley) with the browning of the blades on the lower stalks of the corn.
