Seminar Format: GLR Seminar 2019 is a five-day event with four mini-classes, two four-day classes, and two sets of two-day classes. Early registration will open on Thursday and conclude with the closing banquet on Tuesday. All meals are included except for the Sunday “Night In” Speakeasy, in The Henry Hotel, which is not included in the registration fee.

3 Registration Information

Process and Instructions: Registration is open only to members of EGA (either member of a local chapter or member-at-large). Non-members may register for an additional $50 (US Dollars) fee which provides a one-year at-large USA EGA membership. All persons present in a Seminar 2019 teacher’s class or Studio Time, must be registered seminar participants.

Regular registration opens September 8, 2018 for GLR members. Registrations received on or before November 15, 2018 will be considered for priority class- assignment purposes. After November 15, registrations will be processed according to the date received. GLR chapter members will be given preference for class assignments through December 31, 2018. Registration form: To register, complete the registration form contained in this booklet or download it from the website, www.ega-glr.org and mail it, with your check, to the Registrar (see address on registration form). You must list first, second, and third class choices. All mailed registrations will be confirmed as being received by the Registrar, through email, snail mail, or telephone. You can make a copy of the form for your own records. Cancellation requests must be made to the Registrar no later than February 1, 2019. A refund, less a $50 processing fee, will be mailed by June 1, 2019. See complete cancellation policy on the next page of this booklet. Registration Fees and Class Confirmations: The four-day registration fee is $450; two-day registration fee is $325. Mini-class registration fee is $45, but without any meals. Fees include tuition and all scheduled meals on your class days, except Sunday dinner, which is a special event with a separate fee. Kit fees are separate and are not paid at the time of registration.

• When registering for four days, the full fee of $450 or partial fee of $325 is due with your registration form. If you are registering for two days, the full fee of $325 is due with your registration form. Any fee balance and kit fees for all attendees must be paid by February 15, 2019. Additional guest banquet meals and all Special Events must be ordered on your registration form and paid for with your first installment. Class confirmation mailings will begin January 15, 2019. Regular registration closes December 31, 2018. Any registrations postmarked after December 31, 2018, but on or before February 1, 2019 must include a late-registration fee of $50. No registrations postmarked after February 1, 2019 will be accepted. You will be billed for the balance of your registration fee (if applicable) and your kit fees. 4 Hotel Registration

GLR Seminar 2019 will be held at The Henry Hotel, Autograph Collection, 300 Town Center Drive, Dearborn, MI, 48126.

Please make your reservations with the hotel by telephone at (313) 441-2000 on or before March 18, 2019 at 5 pm. It is recommended that you contact the hotel using this direct number. To receive the group rate of $139 (plus taxes) per night, you must ask for the “Embroiderers’ Guild”. Each room will accommodate up to four persons. Warm and exquisitely designed, the guest room features one king or two double beds, vibrant original art and contemporary lifestyle amenities. Guests enjoy a marble bath with shower/tub, a chair, work desk, flat- screen TV with premium channels, refrigerator, safe, coffee/tea maker, two cordless speaker phones with voicemail. You're always connected with complimentary wired and wireless high-speed internet. Roll-aways available in king rooms only. There is no cost for on-site parking. Directions to the hotel are available on the hotel website. NOTE: You must be a registered guest at The Henry Hotel to participate in GLR Seminar 2019.

Great Lakes Region Seminar Cancellation Policy (adopted April 2013)

• Canceling participant must send cancellation notification to seminar Registrar. • Cancellations postmarked on or before January 10 of the seminar year will receive a refund less the non-refundable registration fee ($50). • Cancellations postmarked 60 or more days prior to the opening of the seminar will incur a $100 cancellation fee in addition to the non-refundable registration fee ($50). • Cancellations postmarked 0-59 days prior to the opening of seminar will be reviewed by the region Executive Committee within 30 days of close of seminar. • A full refund minus the non-refundable registration fee ($50) will be given in the event of the death of the registrant or a member of the immediate family, and acts of war regarding registrant’s reassignment. Immediate family may include spouse, domestic partner, child, parent, parent-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, or sibling. A partial refund may be granted in the event of serious illness of the registrant or an immediate family member, or a natural disaster preventing the registrant’s attendance. Consideration in determining the amount of the refund shall be given to the costs incurred by the seminar. • No refunds will be considered 30 days after close of seminar. • In the event the Great Lakes Region cancels a class after students have been assigned, and a student chooses not to attend seminar, the seminar fees less the non-refundable fee ($50) will be reimbursed. Any travel costs the student has incurred are solely the responsibility of the student.

5 Special Events

Boutique: The search for a boutique for GLR Seminar 2019 is still ongoing. We hope to be able to pass this information on to you soon. Mini-Classes: Friday, April 5, 1 - 4 pm. Four half-day mini-classes are being offered this year for $45 plus kit fee. Please note that if you are only attending class on Friday and not the rest of the week, you do not need to register with the hotel, but should you wish to attend the Opening Banquet, you will need to purchase that meal separately.

Meet the Teachers: Friday, April 5, 6 - 6:30 pm. Meet Seminar teachers and see the models of the class projects they will teach this year. Some teachers may distribute supplies or pre-class information to students. All are encouraged to attend.

Merchandise Night: Saturday, April 6, 7 - 9 pm. Merchandise Night is one of the most popular events at seminar. You’ll find designers, chapters, the GLR, local shops, teachers, and other vendors with tables stocked with everything you want, “need,” and “can’t live without.” It is a great opportunity to see items that may not be available in your area. This event is also open to the public, so invite your friends! If you would like to be a vendor and sell at Merchandise Night, tables can be reserved for $60 for a full table, $30 for a half table, or $25 for a Chapter table.

Teachers’ Showcase: Monday, April 8, 5 - 5:45 pm. At this event, any needlework instructor may reserve a table to display pieces she/he is offering to teach. This is a great way for participants to get ideas for projects to be taught in home chapters.

GLR Member Needlework Exhibit: Monday, April 8, 9 - 4 (drop-off time 7:30 -8:30 am; pick-up time 4-5 pm). You are encouraged to show completed stitched pieces in an open non-juried exhibit. Include projects from past seminars, master craftsman and correspondence courses or any other pieces you would like to share. New this year, you are encouraged to display a treasured stitched heirloom or special gift. Show how needlework has been an important part of our lives. If you are not attending seminar, you may send your pieces with someone who will be there. Mailed entries will not be accepted. If you are interested in participating, please check the appropriate space on the registration form or contact the registrar.

6 Opportunities Volunteer Opportunities: Class Angels: A classroom angel will be selected for each class from the registered participants who indicate on their registration form that they are willing to serve as an “angel.” Angel responsibilities include class-related functions: taking attendance, distributing supplies, monitoring break and lunch times, and assisting the teacher as needed.

Other volunteer opportunities: If you would like to help (e.g., at the Exhibit, meals, boutique, etc.), please indicate interest on your registration form.

GLR Seminar 2020 - “Vision of Stitches 20/20,” hosted by the Fox Valley Chapter in Appleton, WI, will be held Wednesday, April 22, 2020 thru Sunday, April 26, 2020 at the Red Lion Hotel Paper Valley in Appleton. We hope to "see" you there!

Sunday Night In: April 7, 6:30 pm

Cost: $55

Upon registration for this special “Night In” event, you will be given the password for The Galleria Room, a speakeasy hidden in The Henry Hotel. The doors will open at 6:30 pm allowing plenty of time for socializing, as you enjoy intimate round tables or swanky lounge seating. Be sure to visit the cash bar, where you will find your choice of classic craft cocktails or mocktails, as well as a host of other beverages. "Uptown Jazz," a talented local jazz group, will perform all your favorites in classic and smooth jazz throughout the evening. Our appropriately dressed hotel staff will be busy serving a variety of passed hors d'oeuvres. Food stations will also surround the room, offering exquisite fare for your dining pleasure. Chat, eat, drink, listen, relax, enjoy and have fun! Period attire makes for an interesting event, so remember to rouge those knees!!

100: Ukrainian Star Ornament Teacher: Terri Bay Technique: Ukrainian Whitework Level: Basic/Intermediate Kit Fee: $35 Design Size: 4” x 4” Ground: 28ct. White Linen Pre-work: 4 - 6 hours

The Star Ornament is an Ukrainian Whitework design incorporating the regional Mereshka Poltavska technique. It is worked on 28 count linen with two sizes of pearl cotton. Stitches included are Satin, Pulled Double Cable, Spot Eyelet, Buttonhole Eyelet, Ladder Hem Stitch, and Roman Stitch. While some of the pulled stitches venture into the intermediate level, the Mereshka section is basic level. The stitched area is just under 4 inches square. The course will focus on the basics of Ukrainian Whitework, with emphasis on mastering the Mereshka Poltavska Technique. Pre-work will consist of basting and satin stitches and will take 4 to 6 hours.

101: Mediterranean Jewel Teacher: Kurdy Biggs Technique: Level: Basic/Intermediate Kit Fee: $45 Design Size: 4” x 4” Ground: 18ct. Mono Canvas

Weave together threads reminiscent of a Mediterranean beach, with shimmering beads and crystals and you have an elegant jeweled piece – Mediterranean Jewel. Combining stitches such as Crescents, Jessicas, Sprats Heads, and Plaited Rays, with iridescent threads from Rainbow Gallery, The Caron Collection and Kreinik, to create a Fabergé inspired 3D piece. To finish we will use beads and crystals in a variety of clusters to add depth and sparkle to complete the piece. Finished trihedron ornament measures 2” per side on 18 mono canvas. Your Kit will include an 10”x 8” line drawn canvas, threads from Rainbow Gallery, Waterlilies, Kreinik metallics, beads, crystals, stitching and beading needles. Your instruction booklet will have everything you need to stitch and assemble your design.

102: Kiss Me Under the Mistletoe Teacher: Celeste Chalasani Technique: Level: Basic/Intermediate Kit Fee: $15 Design Size: 1.5” x 3.5” Ground: Silk Shantung

Remember sweet kisses under the mistletoe while you create this elegant Stumpwork ornament. In this class, students learn introductory Stumpwork embroidery while padding with stitches and wrapping beads to create berries. Finishing materials and instruction are included.

103: Sassy Tasseling Teacher: Ruthmarie Hofmann Technique: Bead Stringing/Tassel Making All levels Kit Fee: $20 Design Size: 4” to 8” Pre-work: 4 - 6 hours

“Sassy Tasseling” is a half-day class that focuses on the production of petite to chubby small tassels from wool scraps, embellishing the head/skirt core with fat wool beads that accept additional embellishment from over-wrapped stripes, backstitched ribbon, to stitched buttons & beads. Surface-stitchery is layered onto the wool beads that wrap the neck or long waist versus covering the tassel head. Tassels, without a doubt, are one of the sassier forms of pure ornamentation that exist just to be unabashed eye candy!

Tickets for the Great Lakes Region’s annual fundraiser will be sold during the seminar. Participants place their tickets in bags attached to the items they hope to win. The drawings take place during Tuesday’s luncheon. All items available are donated by region chapters or members.

400: Blue Ridge Reflections Teacher: Kurdy Biggs Technique: Canvas Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $130 Design Size: 9” x 9” Ground: 18ct. Mono Canvas

The design elements of Blue Ridge Reflections are based on my childhood in the Blue Ridge. Throughout this design, the stitches mimic various aspects of the region. Mountains, streams, flowers and sky, all combining into a finished piece that resembles a stained glass design. 30 different stitches will be completed using a variety of threads, all based around the Caron Collection Appalachia over-dyed silk floss. Students will create their own design by attaching circles, diamonds or squares, stitched separately, onto their finished design.

401: Autumn Jewels Teacher: Celeste Chalasani Technique: Stumpwork Level: Advanced Intermediate Kit Fee: $100 Design Size: 4” x 10” Ground: Silk Shantung Pre-work: 1 hour

The pomegranate (Punica granatum) originated 4000 years ago in the region stretching from Iran to northern India and has been cultivated since ancient times throughout the Mediterranean region. Now grown worldwide, pomegranates have come to symbolize prosperity, hope, fertility and abundance in many cultures throughout the world. In this class, intermediate and advanced level students will work on a small Stumpwork panel depicting pomegranate flowers and fruit. Students will employ a wide variety of traditional and contemporary Stumpwork techniques, using stranded silk and cotton threads, on cream silk Shantung fabric. Gold chipping, gold spangles, Kreinik Japan thread and garnet-colored beads intensify the striking colors and design.

200: Angel Wings Teacher: Terri Bay Technique: Whitework & Finishing Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $45 Design Size: 3.75” x 3.75”

The Angel Wings Lotus Box is a whitework design finished into a Lotus Box shape. Angel Wings is the variety name of a white Lotus flower and is one of my smaller Lotus box designs, measuring 3 3/4 inches square at the base. It is worked on 28-count linen, using 2 sizes of pearl cotton. The Lotus Box designs developed one night when I was watching my daughter fold Origami pieces. This design is worked using Spot Eyelets, , Chain Eyelets, single Eyelets, , and Smyrna crosses. The finishing is very easy using only Backstitch and . Really, it is much easier than it looks. (Instructions included, finishing supplies not included.) The design is fully stitched twice, to create a front and back.

201: Tranquility Teacher: Kathy Rees Technique: Canvas Design & Color Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $104 Design Size: 6” x 10” Ground: 18 ct. Mono Canvas

This geometric counted canvas design is the final design in my “Peace” trilogy, which includes the popular Serenity & Harmony designs. Planned to coordinate with and complement Serenity & Harmony, the soft blues, pinks and golds, unusual stitch combinations and laid thread patterns, and a wide variety of thread textures, create a mood of tranquility. A few metallic threads are spread throughout, to add sparkle and shine. Several different sizes of squares and rectangles are used to create movement, while still experiencing peace and calmness. The layout of Tranquility is not the same as Serenity or Harmony, but is consistent with them. The additional colorways will coordinate with the Serenity colorways, but not use the exact threads. (Note: Serenity was taught at the 2017 GLR Seminar and Harmony was taught at the GLR 2018 Seminar.)

Sunrise over a sparkling mountain lake invites relaxation. Design devices such as repetition with variation, structure versus atmosphere, and aerial perspective are featured. Develop the design shown or create your own design with a preliminary consultation. Create custom-colored cotton gauze to punch up texture. Color-wash the scene with sheers cut with a heat tool to add shine or mist. a class treasure chest of fabrics, hand and machine stitching threads, gives you the full range of color choices. Additional materials include acrylic paint, gel media, bonding web, Angelina fibers and film, and hand stitching threads. Optional free machine embroidery.

203: Earthsong II Teacher: Ruthmarie Hofmann Technique: Surface & Dimensional Embroidery All levels Kit Fee: $93 Design Size: 5” x 5” Ground: 18ct. Mono Canvas & Linen

Earthsong is a 5x5 inch miniature landscape of linen-covered felt mounds and backyard rocks, nestled into textural stitches of randomized diagonal and crossed stitches, in the 18-count canvas ground, blending into padded French knots, Turkey work, spidery detached Buttonhole and a sprinkle of bright beads. Tucked into a deep table frame for an easy finish, Earthsong is a cathartic romp of anything goes, utilizing cotton and wool threads in natural tones.

204: Autumn Allure Teacher: Kay Stanis Technique: Silk & Metal Level: Basic/Intermediate Kit Fee: $60 Design Size: 6” x 6” Ground: Silk Foundation

The days dwindle down, the air is like wine, and the oak leaves show their true color, as they turn to jewels in golden light. As these treasures of autumn brighten the landscape and then fade to traceries of gold, this silk and metal embroidery brings to life memories of the splendor of the season. The student will be introduced to silk and metal thread embroidery techniques including: Random Buttonhole, over padding, braid, and Milliary; creating detached elements. The students will learn to frame-up 2 fabrics for the foundation and backing.

205: Celebrare la Cornucopia Teacher: Deborah Tirico Technique: Wool Applique Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $175 Design Size: 22” diameter Ground: Felted Wool Pre-work: 2 hours The cornucopia, or horn of plenty, is a symbol of abundance and nourishment. The design celebrates the symbolism stitched into Baltimore Album quilt blocks of the 19th century, including the pineapple which means welcome, and the acorn which symbolizes loyalty. This piece includes specialty threads, beads and colorful, luscious felted wool and will be a stunning topper for any surface. Students will learn appliqué methods including the tack stitch, my signature needle slanting techniques and fabric layering and trapunto stuffing methods, for adding dimension to the work. A variety of stitches will be reviewed. The kits are available on a black or white field color.

206: Studio Time

Space will be provided for you to spend two glorious days of stitching on a personal project of your choice — no teacher, no kit fee. Stitchers share suggestions and brainstorm to resolve problems, should you need help. Enjoy!

13 300: Two - Day Classes Monday - Tuesday

300: Snow Blossoms Teacher: Terri Bay Technique: Hardanger Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $35 Design Size: 9” x 9” Ground: 28 ct. Linen Pre-work: 14 - 18 hours

Snow Blossoms is an intermediate level Hardanger doily, which measures just under 9 inches, point to point. Time in class will be spent learning cutting techniques, the Greek Cross and Dove’s Eye filling stitches, how to make consistent even eyelets, and how to work a nice, smooth edging. The Blossoms are worked on 28-count linen, with two sizes of pearl cotton. There will be pre- work consisting of Klosters and the Satin stitch motifs, which will take 14 to 18 hours.

301: Oasis Teacher: Kathy Rees Technique: Canvas Design & Color Level: Basic/Intermediate Kit Fee: $89 Design Size: 8” x 8” Ground: 18 ct. Mono Canvas

Oasis is a counted design stitched on 18-count mono canvas. It measures approximately 8" across, as stitched on point (as a diamond). Rotated 45 degrees, it makes a 6" square. There are 8 additional colorways available. Threads used include Caron Watercolours, Gloriana Silk Floss, Gloriana Princess Perle, Vineyard Silk, and Rainbow Gallery’s Entice, Petite Sparkle Rays, Neon Rays +, and Splendor. Class topics will include discussion of different stitches, planning the “stitching path”, compensation, diagonal vs straight stitches, overdyed threads, contrast of thread types, etc.

302: Batik To Stitch Teacher: Laura Smith Technique: Batik with Embroidery All levels Kit Fee: $75 Design Size: 12” x 12” Ground: Cotton

The batik process creates complex, stitchable designs with color- layering on fabric. Wax is applied to fabric with a stamp called a tjap (pronounced “chop”). Colors are painted in layers, alternating with wax. An optional crackling technique creates a marbled effect, seen as navy blue lines in the turtle design. Finally, the piece is ironed to remove wax and set paint. Images available are butterfly, dragonfly, irises, and turtle. Students learn the batik process on Day 1. On Day 2, they may stitch their designs or make more batik images.

303: TidalWash Teacher: Ruthmarie Hofmann Technique: Surface Embroidery & Beadwork Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $59 Design Size: 3.25” x 5” Ground: Congress Cloth Pre-work: 4 - 6 hours

A lush wash of textures, padded and linear, is the major feature of this necklace and earring set. Composed of hand-dyed cottons, Facets and Memory thread, clusters of large to small eyelets crowd against a nest of coiled, couched and scribbled threads. Composed of folded canvas pieces, the pendant shape is secured with edgings of metallic seed beads. The top, stitched and rolled with couched Memory Thread, easily holds form for a basic chain or cording. Small triangle dangles serve neatly as matching earrings.

304: Emerald Essence Teacher: Kay Stanis Technique: Silk & Metal Level: Intermediate Kit Fee: $130 Design Size: 5” x 9” Ground: Congress Cloth

It is said that the individual wearing an emerald can feel a surge in creativity, artistic talents, and the skill to innovate and form ideas better. It is a stone of inspiration and infinite patience; and it embodies unity, compassion and unconditional love—fidelity. We will be surrounding this lovely jewel, with the sparkle of crystal and amethyst, to bring out its brilliance. The radiating, detached elements suggest the essence of the stone. Students will lay silk in diamond Waffle stitch and mount the center stone with technique. Smaller imitation emeralds, montees, Loch Rosen crystals, braids, seed beads and sequins, are stitched in various combinations, along with detached wired elements. 305: Romance in Baltimore Teacher: Deborah Tirico Technique: Wool Applique Level: Basic/Intermediate Kit Fee: $155 Design Size: 15” x 15” Ground: Felted Wool Pre-work: 2 hours

This is a classic Baltimore block, which is one of many diagonal floral spray designs of the classic Baltimore album period. The peony was a popular design in quilts during the mid-19th century and its symbolism ranges from healing to honor. In this project, we take the classic Baltimore Album block and, using dimensional techniques of layering and slanted needle technique, give it a completely updated look. The block features beads, bright felted wool colors and matching and contrasting wool threads. Students can choose between black and white for the field color in their kits.

306: Studio Time Space will be provided for you to spend two glorious days of stitching on a personal project of your choice — no teacher, no kit fee. Stitchers share suggestions and brainstorm to resolve problems, should you need help. Enjoy!

17 Faculty Biographies Terri Bay began teaching Ukrainian Whitework at Nordic Needle. One class lead to another and now she has taught Ukrainian Whitework, Hardanger, Pulled and Drawn Thread and at EGA National Seminars, Regional Seminars, chapter workshops, and other fun events. She was honored to be featured as the Designer Across America in the June, 2018 issue of NeedleArts Magazine. Terri is a member of EGA, EAC, and NETA.

Kurdy Biggs is a counted canvas designer, teacher and owner of Threedles Needleart Designs. Kurdy holds a Level II Teaching Certificate from the National Academy of Needlearts. Her geometric designs have won numerous awards from ANG, NAN, EGA, TNNA and Woodlawn. She has been published in Needlepointers, Now, and Cross Stitch and Needlework. Celeste Chalasani is a designer and teacher specializing in Stumpwork. She has taught extensively for the Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA) at chapter workshops, regional and national seminars, for the National Academy of Needlearts, and for Blue Bonnet Studio Time. She currently teaches an online class for Craftsy. Celeste has also written an Individual Correspondence Course on Stumpwork for EGA. Ruthmarie Hofmann For 30 years, Ruthmarie has been into needlearts, teaching through national and regional EGA, ANG, and fiberart events. A multi-layered past includes designing commercial kits and a line of hand- painted . Her predilection is encouraging creativity in color and design with beads, form manipulation, and mixed media in fabric or canvas.

Kathy Rees learned to cross stitch at 14 and has never stopped using a needle. Since 2011 she has committed herself full time to designing and teaching. She especially enjoys working with color, multiple overdyed threads, and developing many colorways for her designs. She teaches at stitchery groups and EGA Chapters around the country, as well as Regional and National Seminars. Her designs have won numerous ribbons and awards in various venues and she has been published in Needlepoint Now. 18 Faculty Biographies Laura Smith is an embroidery innovator, nationally known designer, and teacher. Her work has been shown all over the U.S. She holds the EGA Master Craftsman designation in Color and has served as chair for the Master Craftsman Program since 2006. She is past Chairman of EGA Fiber Forum from 2011 through 2015 and former director of an arts center. Her website is Stitch4Fun.com.

Kay Stanis is an internationally known fiber artist, designer, Master Craftsman, and Certified and Graduate Certified Teacher of EGA and Kurenai Kai Traditional Japanese Embroidery. She has been and will be on the faculties of American Needlepoint Guild national seminars, Callaway School of Needlearts, Embroiderers Association of Canada, EGA national and regional seminars, Koala Conventions, South Australia Embroidery Conference, Embroidery 2000 (New Zealand), and many independent groups.

Deborah Tirico has studied appliqué with national and international teachers and continues to study historical appliqué quilts and coverlets. Her area of specialization is the creation of a sculptural look to felted wool appliqué by using needle techniques. Deborah’s designs feature matching and over-dyed wool threads, and embroidery embellishments, which enhance and define the clarity of her subjects. She is an active member of the EGA, EAC, NETA, PA quilters and London Guild and enjoys teaching at guilds, chapter meetings, regional, national and international seminars.
