AWARDS MANAGER CANADIAN SOCIETY FOR CHEMICAL ENGINEERING 130 SLATER ST, SUITE 550 OTTAWA, ON, K1P 6E2 [email protected]

May 22, 2014

Dear CSChE Awards Manager,

On behalf of the CSChE Student Chapter, I would like to nominate our Chapter for the Student Chapter Merit Award for 2013-2014. This past year, the student chapter crossed into unchartered territories with many new events and other large scale projects. It was an extremely successful year for our chapter this past year where we improved the overall participation of our members for all of our events and also incorporated brand new events on top our usual events list (from 17 events to 23), such as OSPE Industry Night, LinkedIn Profile Building Tutorial and many more. The chapter also sent a strong contingent of delegates to the Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference in Fredericton, NB and was represented well in the student competition, with one of our delegates winning first place in the Robert G. Auld Competition. One of our biggest victories as a chapter this past year was the implementation of a mentorship program. The program, known as Chem Connect, has two types of mentorship for our students. The first type is for first year students to have an upper year mentor, which provides them an opportunity to transition successfully into the university environment. Many students come from different backgrounds and this program is designed to assist them in finding balance with their social, academic and professional lives. The second part of this program is the engagement of alumni and students in a professional network. Most upper year students are looking for advice and options for their career and this service provides them with an opportunity to learn about different career paths they have after graduation and how they can get there with the help of our Alumni. Both programs this year saw excellent participation from all parties involved and we look forward to continue to develop this program further for this coming year. On the social front, this year, the student chapter put together a host of social gatherings for our students to foster that sense of community within our university. This included the very successful annual CSChE Halloween Party, CSChE Coffee House and Kris Kringle and Valentine’s Day Candy Grams. Each of these events featured participation in excess of one hundred students. Other events included class parties for each year in Chemical Engineering, which also had great turn outs. All these social events on top of our professional development agenda served to make this past year a memorable one for our student body. Some of our other popular events included: our annual Summer Research Symposium, Plant tours to Celestica and Steamwhistle Brewery, Alumni Services Info Session, Summer Jobs Info Session, CHEMazing Race, How to Survive First Year and the annual Chemical Engineering

Dinner-Dance in collaboration with Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Council. For a complete list of events, please see Appendix A. The previous academic term also saw our executive take up various projects to help improve the services we provide for the student body. One of these projects was a database for Co-op placements. Many students in their third year look for co-op placements but they don’t know what to expect and they can utilize this database to look at different opportunities available to them and the type of work they would be doing. This database compiles the experiences from past co-op students (who remain anonymous). Another growth opportunity for us was in developing an external sponsorship package in collaboration with the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Council and trying to find additional streams for revenue for our chapter and also make valuable contact with the industry to participate in our events. Other expansion plans for us included collaboration with the department on executing an effective Town Hall that asked for feedback on a variety of academic and social issues and also participation in the Graditude campaign with the SKULE TM Alumni Association that urges fourth years to give back to their student life experience. This is also a new major revenue stream for our operations. Altogether last year, our team managed a budget of approximately $22,000. For our continuous improvement and growth accomplishments over last year, please see Appendix B. As an executive member for the last 3 years and as incoming chair, I have seen this chapter grow tremendously. Our members take great pride in representing the national chapter and this can be seen through our dedication to the CSChE cause. The work the executive team has put in this past year is reflective in our success and I am extremely proud to be part of this amazing organization. I, sincerely, hope that you consider the University of Toronto CSChE Student Chapter for the Student Chapter Merit Award for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Sincerely,

Praneet Bagga Chair 2014-2015 Treasurer 2013-2014 University of Toronto CSChE Student Chapter 200 College St, Room 216A Toronto, ON, M5S 3E5 [email protected]

Appendix A: Events

Summer Student Symposium

The Summer Student Research Symposium encourages students to present their own research and findings in an academic and professional setting. This year's competition attracted 13 participants of the highest calibre. Professors, graduate students and members of industry chosen for the judging panel provided valuable feedback to participants, strengthening both their research and presentation skills. The winners of the competition ( 2 students) were sponsored by the Department and our chapter to represent the University of Toronto at the annual Canadian Chemical Engineering Competition in Fredericton, NB.

CSChE goes to BMO Field to support Toronto FC

This year, to appeal to sports fans, the chapter organized a trip to watch the Toronto FC play the Chicago Fire. Many of our students pursue athletics at intramural or varsity level and this event provided an opportunity for these students to enjoy a sports game with friends. There were 12 participants who attended this event.

How to Survive First Year

How to Survive First Year is an information session for first year students to meet some of the upper year students and to learn about the services the University and the chapter offers them. The services include gaining access, useful tips for studying and also getting involved with extracurricular activities. This year we had over 60 students attend, which is the most we have ever had and the feedback we received from this event said that this event was extremely helpful for those trying to find their bearings in the university environment.

Professor-Student Mixer

This speed-dating style event encourages students to meet their peers and their professors outside of the classroom, in a relaxed and inviting environment. Professors and staff of the Department of Chemical Engineering offered advice, shared stories and provided a forum for questions usually not asked by the student body. The idea behind this event was for students to get to know their professors on a more personal level. 50 students attended this event, which is the most we have ever had.

Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference in Fredericton, NB

The annual Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference is always a highlight for our student chapter year. This year we saw 23 student delegates from the University of Toronto attend the Conference in Fredericton. Like past years, our participants in the student competitions excelled – Devika Jain placed 1 st in the Robert G. Auld Competition. However, on top of the student competitions, the delegates showed great participation in workshops and also used the conference as a great networking opportunity with industry professionals. For our students, the conference is one of those events that allows us to explore the opportunities we have as future Chemical Engineers.

CSChE Halloween Party

The Halloween Party is a great way for students to mix and mingle with their peers and dress in their favourite costumes. This year, we had over 100 people dressed up within the Chemical Engineering Common Room, which is the biggest turnout we have ever had at this event. We also gave students incentives to participate in the form of providing them with pizza, candy and prizes for best costumes. Overall, it was a great event for the students to get their mind off midterms and celebrate Halloween for a couple hours.

PEY Student Mixer

Over 50 people attended this event. The PEY mixer was a chance for students to talk and network with students who have been on PEY (year-long co-op term). This event in the past has not been successful, but this year, with the help of all the executives, the chapter was able to attract a larger audience.

What to Do During Summer

This is a brand new event looking to focus on first and second year students looking for summer work positions. Summer placements in an industry environment are hard to come by and this event enticed a large group of students (40+ ) who were looking for opportunities that were available within University of Toronto and also abroad.

CSChE Coffee House and Kris Kringle

This was the fourth annual CSChE Coffee House and Kris Kringle. This event always has a great turnout and this year was no different with over 120 participants. The students came out to exchange gifts with their classmates, cheer on fellow student performers and a photo with our very own Chemical Engineering Santa Klaus. It was a treat to see one of our professors’ volunteer for the chapter’s cause and dress as Santa Klaus. This event saw collaboration with the Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Association, had 20 graduate students, faculty and staff attend and help facilitate, and is one of our most attended and best received events throughout the year.

The Perks of being an Alumni

Once students graduate from our department, they are usually unaware of the services that the University offers its Alumni. To bridge that gap, the chapter organized an information session for fourth year students. There was a speaker from the Engineering Alumni Association to answer any questions as well.

Chemical Engineering Dinner Dance

The Chemical Engineering Dinner Dance is an annual event that brings together students, staff and alumni of the Department of Chemical Engineering for a night of fun, entertainment, good food and dancing. The Dinner Dance is a collaborative event between the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Council (Chem Club) and the CSChE. This event takes months of planning, and over 300 people attended this year.

OSPE Industry Night

The student chapter collaborated with The Ontario Society of Professional Engineers to organize an evening with panelists from different chemical engineering industries. This was a new event that specifically targeted third and fourth year students who were starting to think about career options available to Chemical Engineers. Over 120 industry professionals and students attended, making this event one of our most successful events of the year. The event itself took a couple months to plan by our executive team because of its scale and we received a lot of positive reviews from the participants.

LinkedIn Tutorial

This is another one of our new events. LinkedIn has become a great tool to stay connected with industry professionals and we had an alumni come in to give a tutorial on how to set up a strong and detailed LinkedIn profile. A lot of companies utilize LinkedIn to research a potential employee and this tutorial was designed to help students build a strong profile for that purpose. 27 people turned out to this event.

Chemical Engineering Week

CHEMazing Race/Troost Cup

This year, CSChE partnered with ILEAD to organize this event. As part of our Chemical Engineering Week, this provided students an opportunity to engage and utilize their engineering minds in a series of entertaining activities. A focus was put on team building and time management, as well as design and problem-solving. Activities included an innovative structuring challenges and hand- eye coordination challenges. 8 students, in 4 teams, participated.

Graduate-Undergraduate Student Pub Night

A perennial favourite of the student body, the CSChE and Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Association (CEGSA) Graduate-Undergraduate Student Pub Night provided an opportunity for undergraduate students to meet their teaching assistants and other grad students in an informal setting. Students gained valuable insight into graduate school admissions, the pressures of research, and the rewards of continuing their education. Approximately 50 students attended.

CSChE Student Chapter c/o Undergraduate Office 200 College Street WB240 Email : [email protected] Toronto, Ontario M5S 3E5 Website : csche.skule.ca

Plant Tours x 2 Another student favourite is the Industrial Plant Tour. The CSChE organizes and facilitates tours of various manufacturing and processing plants in the GTA. This year, the chemical engineering students visited both Steamwhistle Brewery and Celestica. Steamwhistle provided an experience for students interested in food engineering and processing, while Celestica gave great insight into the current state of manufacturing in a high- cost geography, as well as the potential growth for green energy (wind turbines, solar panels) in Ontario. A combined 20 students attended these tours.

Chem Eng Town Hall

Another addition to Chem Week this year was a Town Hall to get feedback from students about their university experience. The format consisted of small focus groups and students switching between these groups to come up with valuable feedback for the department in terms of academics and teaching methods. There were lots of good conversations and with professors present; this was a great stride forward in improving our program at the university. About 40 people attend.

Candy Grams

During the week before Valentine's Day, the chapter sells Candy Grams and then delivers them on Valentine’s Day to the person they were bought for. This year, we sold over 464 candy grams to over 200 hundred students in Chemical Engineering beating our sales from the past three years combined.

Class Events x 4

Each class in the Department of Chemical Engineering was allocated funds and held their own social event as a celebration of the hard work they had done during the year, to recognize their peers as leaders and to enjoy and build the Chemical Engineering community. The second, third year and fourth year students held socials in condos downtown, while the first years held a pub night. A combined total of 300 students attended these events.

Appendix B: Growth from Previous Year

Chem Connect Mentorship Program The Chem Connect Program can be broken down into First Year Mentorship and Alumni Mentorship Network.

The first year mentorship focused on helping the first year students transition into a rigorous university environment with the help of upper year students. During the Kick-off event, over 50 first year students and upper year students attended and those who had conflicts were asking to be part of the program afterwards as well. The Kick-off event was used to gauge, based on preference, the mentor-mentee partnerships and used a speed dating style format. Throughout the year, the chapter checked in with mentors and their mentees and also encouraged them to come out to other chapter events. To also build a stronger mentor-mentee relationship, the chapter also organized a board game potluck social that attracted 25 participants (see below)

The Alumni Mentorship Network utilized LinkedIn as a tool for upper year students to connect with alumni and ask questions or start discussion threads. Over 50 upper students and alumni participated in this network the past year. During the kick-off event, 25 people attended and used that time as a networking opportunity. The network continues to grow as we get a continuous flow of alumni and students joining and there will be more networking opportunities as also career building seminars in the upcoming year.

Addition of New Events

The CSChE student chapter hosted 23 different events this past year compared to the 17 events in the previous year. The executive team also helped and collaborated with other organizations in 10 other events hosted by other organizations. With a limited budget, the executive team worked diligently to organize these events in the most cost efficient manner without compromising on the quality of the events.

Attendance at Departmental Advisory Meetings

Continuing from last year, the department continued to invite student leaders to discuss new department projects with the students and also get updates from the students on events run by the chapter and other student council committees. The meeting attendees include the Chair and Associate Chair of the Chemical Engineering Department, Chairs and Vice Chairs from the CSChE student chapter and Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Council, representatives from ILEAD and the External Relations Manager.

Executive Personal Development Meetings

These one on one meetings between the chair of the student chapter and other executives were used to develop goals and expectations for the committee. Having these meetings once at the beginning of the year and once during each semester allows the team to set objectives and reflect on them throughout the year. It also helps keep the vision of the chapter on direction, which is to help students develop professionally, academically and socially.

PEY Database

This was a new initiative this year, where we would catalog co-op experiences of past students for future co-op students to look at. The entries are anonymous and includes information such as company the student worked for, their position in the company, the projects they worked on (unless confidential) and their experience as a whole. The catalog is now live on the Chemical Engineering Department Website. http://csche.chem-eng.utoronto.ca/

External Sponsorship

This year, we focused external sponsorship on not just obtaining revenue but also requesting the time of our sponsors. Specifically, we collaborated with Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) for the OSPE Industry night. We also got sponsorship from Maple Leafs Sports, which allowed us to get discounted tickets to see Toronto FC play. Other organizations that we have contacted for future events include Professional Engineering Ontario and CSChE Toronto Local Section. We have also started an initiative to get more Alumni involved, especially those who are always looking to give back to the student experience.

Graditude Collaboration

Graditude is an Engineering Alumni Association run initiative to campaign and raise money for the student life fund, which is then distributed as club funding to our chapter. This past year, this was a major source of funding, as we received $1500 in total from the Engineering Alumni Club Funding Pool and Graditude. CSChE played a big part this year in campaigning to raise this money by organizing several events with the Graditude representatives. These include auctions of merchandize, selling University of Toronto Graditude Pins and collaborating with the department to match the money raised by the students. The chapter also organized for a Graditude booth at each of our events.

Merchandize

With some of the revenue from previous years, another initiative for the chapter this year was to buy and sell merchandize to students. In previous years, University of Toronto has featured a red sweater and this past year, we featured a red Polo t-shirt with the official CSChE and University of Toronto Chemical Engineering Logos on it. The design was a hit as we sold 50% of the inventor already. Students representing the University at the conference also receive this complimentary from the chapter.

Attendance of Events

We saw increased participation and attendance at our events this year than in previous years. A lot of that has been due to the hard work and efforts the executive team puts in. The dedication of this chapter to the students of Chemical Engineering at University of Toronto is reciprocated through the attendance at our events.

Other Collaboration

The Chapter in the past year has also collaborated on many events with the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Council, ILEAD Chemical Engineering Working Group and Chemical Engineering Graduate Students Association. We are also an affiliated entity of the University of Toronto Students Union and the University of Toronto Engineering Society. The CSChE executive and members also provided the necessary support for the Department of Chemical Engineering at University of Toronto and helped organize the Annual Chemical Engineering Industry and Alumni Dinner.
