successful nation is characterized by a strong network of business hubs which form the key fabric of economic growth. AThe University of Lusaka School of Business, Economics and Management was established to contribute by creating capacity in human capital that would drive the key sectors of the economy.

The year 2020 has come with challenges that have brought a decline in economic and business activities. Some industries have been affected at different levels with some completely closing while others are struggling to survive. Despite all these challenges, we must forge ahead and think of innovative ways of sustaining businesses.

In line with the 2020 Graduation Theme which is “Conquering beyond the New Normal through Technology, Innovation and Excellence”, the School continues to make significant progress in adopting to new technological advancements by way of embracing e-learning platforms. Further, initiatives that have been undertaken include the continued professional development of the lecturing staff in the School in the use of online teaching platforms and the use of blended learning to deliver high quality content to students in the School. During the year, the School has successfully held virtual workshops for students undertaking the research projects to equip them with skills and knowledge on research proposal writing and proposal defenses. The School has adopted all these initiatives as a way of upholding the standards of excellence in the learning process.

This year’s Graduation Ceremony is very special to the School of Business, Economics and Management as the School will be graduating its first cohort of Actuaries under its Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science Programme. This is a great achievement for the School of Actuaries and the University having pioneered Actuarial training in Zambia.

The School has been running ACCA, and CA Zambia professional Programmes in collaboration with Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA) respectively.

In terms of research and publications, the School continues to make contributions to the total stock of journal articles by academic staff members in the University.

16 Passion for Quality Education: Our Driving Force Testimonials

MS. TASOKWA LISA BANDA (2019 GRADUATE)

The University of Lusaka’s motto that states’ Passion for Quality Education: Our Driving Force’ helped me decide to pursue my Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing from the University.

Today I am proud to say that acquiring a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing from the University of Lusaka has been a great experience. Working for Multichoice Zambia, which operates in a dynamic and competitive environment in Pay TV industry demands a very good understanding and interpretation of a Company’s strategic plan to remain competitive in the industry. I realised that I needed to contribute more to the success of the business by furthering my career in Marketing. Furthermore, passing through the hands of the best Lecturers helped me not only to graduate with a Merit , obtaining skills required for the Pay TV industry, but also got me a promotion from being the Customer Service Representative position under the Operations Department to Customer Value Management under the Marketing Department. My University experience equipped me with a better understanding of managing, developing and implementing marketing activities to maximize sales which contribute to the success of the business.

In view of this, the Passion and drive for quality education at the University of Lusaka motivated me to return to the University to pursue a Master of Business Administration with Finance (MBA-FIN); where I am currently in my third level to be completed in June 2021 and I am looking forward to obtaining a Doctorate from the University of Lusaka with the aim of keeping my self-abreast with knowledge and skills required in my work and field of study.

I am very confident that the knowledge I have acquired and continued to acquire from the University of Lusaka, I can conquer anything in life including those that have come with the new normal.

17 Passion for Quality Education: Our Driving Force SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AND HEALTH SCIENCES

PROF. KASONDE BOWA // EXECUTIVE DEAN

The Covid-19 pandemic which began in China in December 2019 has adversely affected Health Care training in Zambia and the world.

The School of Medicine and Health Sciences has not been immune to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. The School has had to adjust to the new normal by shifting from the traditional modes of teaching to virtual learning. Online training has been the predominant method of teaching comprising over 75% of the teaching in the 2020 academic year.

The Graduation theme of ‘Conquering beyond the New Normal through Technology, Innovation and Excellence’ provides an apt alliteration of the schools response to this situation. Covid-19 has provided both a risk and an opportunity to explore online training modes for the School. The School has established online lab based training of students with the acquisition of a Power Lab System which allows students to conduct experiments in Medical Science courses using an electronic platform. Further, the School has adopted a blended approach to learning which combines both live audio, video and teleconference facilities linking students and lecturers across national, regional and international boundaries. This has enhanced learning across all Programmes in the School. The School plans to broaden the health care training package in 2021 to Nursing Sciences, Pharmacy, Clinical Medicine and Laboratory Sciences.

The School of Medicine and Health Sciences fully expects to be one of the leading trainers of Health Care in Zambia and the region in the next five years. This vision is premised on the foundational base of its modern training infrastructure, a modern internationally based curriculum and staff, as well as innovative online based training. In addition, the School envisions the completion of its modern state of the art Hospital facility which will extend the School beyond Health training but also Health Care service provision for the community.

Mr. Tapson Mwansa - BSc in Public Health

A long journey starts with a single step, so was my academic journey with the University of Lusaka to pursue a Degree in Public Health. This Programme has immensely increased my knowledge, understanding and appreciation of healthcare and how I can contribute to the wellbeing of the community.

My experience at the University of Lusaka was awesome, although sometimes school pressure would mount so high to the point that I would question whether I would make it to the end, but my resolve was sure, “Finish what you have started”. I met great minds in students and lecturers that later shaped my life perspective. The friends I made and studied with made my stay so good and worthwhile.

The University of Lusaka’s Passion for Quality Education adage goes beyond a mere school motto. It is a

18 Passion for Quality Education: Our Driving Force force to reckon with. It makes one aspire for greatness embossed with agility and power to make a difference. You can see the vision of the university in the commitment and dedication of lecturers.

In the truest sense, my whole academic experience at UNILUS was exceptional and excellent, that it gives me pride to say; we came we saw we conquered.

Ms. Idah Chulu– BSc in Public Health

Graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public health from the University of Lusaka has been a great experience. When I reflect on my 4 years journey at the University, my heart is filled with so much gratitude. In my 3rd year of study, the University helped me to obtain a 100% scholarship via Absa Bank by then Barclays Bank. This meant for the rest of my academic years I would study without any worries about tuition fees.

As a public health student, i went through enriching experiences I never imagined I would endeavour to do. What made it more special was that I had a chance to take other elective courses that might not relate to my major but opened my eyes to other perspectives and how we can build healthy environments that interact cohesively and synergistically in improving people’s lives.

To all the students, succeeding in college does not mean only having high grades. Straight A’s shouldn’t be the ultimate goal, but rather one’s purpose should always be the full growth of the person in all areas. SCHOOL OF LAW

DR. CHIPASHA MULENGA // EXECUTIVE DEAN

‘Conquering Beyond the New Normal through Technology, Innovation and Excellence’

“The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew.” Abraham Lincoln

Provision of quality education is our ever-present driving force and this year, we are “conquering beyond the new normal through technology, innovation and excellence.” The COVID 19 global pandemic has had far-reaching consequences and our Institution has not been spared. It is in such a difficult time that the character, courage and determination are required and indeed, the School of Law has risen above the challenge and demonstrated resilience and endurance.

The School has risen to the challenge posed by COVID 19 and has utilized the appropriate technology and innovative practices to redefine its legal training methods. This has culminated into excellent provision of consistent quality legal education notwithstanding the national lockdown. Some of the notable methods we have embraced to ensure that excellent service is provided to our students include maintaining good health practices as prescribed by relevant authorities, retraining of lecturers on new teaching methods, and acquiring virtual learning and interaction software.

Conquering boundaries

The focus of the School goes beyond teaching the substantive content of the law to provide our students with a platform that engages them to think critically, research and offer solutions to pertinent legal issues in society. The COVID 19 pandemic impressed on the School to devise innovative ways to run its programs and with the use of technology, this has been made possible. Our students can participate in moot competitions and legal clinic activities through our online platforms. Also, our students are equipped with online journals and books that are readily accessible via our UNILUS student portal.

Notwithstanding the above, our success stories are best communicated through the various experiences of our graduating students as outlined below:

STUDYING

The curriculum of the School is intended to equip students with the necessary skills required to enhance legal education simultaneously incorporating practical courses thereby equipping students with relevant industry skills upon completion. Nkole Catia Lungu had the following to say:

One of the greatest things about the UNILUS School of Law is how it provides its students with a platform for many opportunities that help one advance their career even before it begins. I was

20 Passion for Quality Education: Our Driving Force privileged to take part in both international and national moots all made possible by the University. Additionally, I had an opportunity to work for the UNILUS Legal Clinic. During my years at UNILUS, I had moments of doubt in my abilities but the lecturers there are a hands-on team and have personally helped me not only with my academics but with all my co-curricular activities as well, they provided me with a friendly and welcoming environment in which I received massive mentoring.

When the University closed due to COVID-19, I was afraid that this would negatively affect my studies and research, however, the University was able to make a quick transition into the new normal and provided effective e-learning facilities that enabled me to study and complete my research. I am proud that today that my academic success coupled with valuable life lessons learnt during my studies, I am an all-rounded person. Massive thanks to the University of Lusaka!

Nkole Catia Lungu

SCHOLARSHIP AND MENTORSHIP

The University believes in affording its students with life-changing opportunities. In 2017, UNILUS formed a Mentorship Society whose aim is twofold: first to equip incoming students with the necessary tools required to ease into legal studies and second, to inspire students to work towards reaching their utmost potential in society. Through the Society, the School can identify scholarship opportunities. In 2019, the University partnered with DLA Piper and one student, Beard Mwanza Jr, has been awarded a scholarship. In his own words, he says:

I first walked the corridors of UNILUS in 2016, then I was just a small-town teenager trying hoping to achieve his dreams, four years later I am a graduating from law school with merit. UNILUS did not only help me achieve my academic dreams but beyond this, providing various opportunities that enhanced my skills. I grew my leadership abilities, serving in different capacities including Moot Coordinator under the UNILUS Moot Society. In 2018 I was awarded an opportunity to represent the University in the Musa Dudhia Moot Competition. In 2019, I represented the University at the Nelson Mandela World Moot Competition. Beyond all this, the University gave me a platform to apply for the DLA Piper Global Scholarship Program. Consequently, I was awarded the Scholarship. I will always remember UNILUS as an incubator of potential and a place where innovation, creativity and opportunity meet.

Beard Mwanza

MOOT COMPETITION

Mooting and Advocacy skills is an important component of the law curriculum. As course, it enables students to put into practice that which is taught by developing arguments which are argued in a ‘moot court’ before a panel of judges. Beyond the internal moot held at the University, our students are allowed to compete nationally, regionally and internationally. One of our students writes:

There are no fitting words to describe what many would call a success story. I came to the University in 2016 and was fortunate enough to utilize the conducive environment to my advantage and God did the rest.

21 Passion for Quality Education: Our Driving Force The University gave me a platform served with a plethora of opportunities. In my second year, I served as the President of the UNILUS Law Association making me the first-ever second- year student to do so. The opportunity would later open the door to becoming a member of the Students’ Law Association of Zambia and Vice President of the Student Council. The experience was fascinating as a lot of my skills including networking and leadership were sharpened. I have represented UNILUS in the Musa Dudhia Moot Court Competition and African Human Rights Moot Court Competition.

As with most law students, my journey as a law student was met with challenges, but the environment at UNILUS turned the challenges into my success story. I am hereby convinced that there is no other place in this world that would have made my experience better than UNILUS.

Victor Munung’a Chizawu

LEGAL CLINIC

The Legal Clinic provides students with a platform to apply theoretical principles into practice. It is one of the ways that students are taught community service. To date, the Clinic has received several cases, ranging from domestic and family law matters to contractual and land disputes. One of the pioneers, James Tembo, laments the following:

Most people will tell you that “a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” I am not going to tell you the same, in fact, I truly believe they are wrong. It begins with a decision to make the first step. They will tell you many things about this journey but what they fail to tell you is that there are many obstacles that you will encounter with every step that you make. It is this very reason that makes the destination much sweeter.

I am proud to say that I was one of the pioneers of the UNILUS Law Clinic where I served as Student Coordinator. The Clinic is a symbol of innovation and excellence presenting students with innumerable opportunities including study tours and specialised training.

Due to the ongoing pandemic that we are currently grappling with, the Clinic has utilized social media platforms to reach out to society thus conquering boundaries beyond the new normal through technology.

Today, I am an intern at Messrs Makebi Zulu Advocates. I am proud that serving in the Law Clinic has indeed opened up numerous doors for my career. I am grateful to UNILUS as I could not have done it without them. James Tembo

LEGAL WRITING AND RESEARCH

The research/dissertation course is an integral part of the LLB degree at UNILUS. An essential role of a lawyer is to foster law development and this is a tool we intend to equip students with under our research course. As a testament of the effectiveness of the course, Wayne Lwiindi Chisonga had the following to say:

22 Passion for Quality Education: Our Driving Force I began to write my dissertation and the research process was challenging but ever so fun. The ‘new normal’ meant that we would have to learn differently. I never got to meet my supervisor in person, however, we communicated with ease using the online platforms. My supervisor was ever so helpful guiding me in understanding complex issues through his quick and easy to understand feedback. Overall, my time at UNILUS was amazing, I do not think such close attention would have been given to develop and hone my research and writing skills elsewhere. The University has also taught me to be humble, to remain a student and a servant of the legal fraternity, to keep a keen ear to the ground and to have an extensive focus to the law.

Wayne Lwiindi Chisonga

In conclusion, it can be seen from the above that as a School, we have embraced the New Normal by conquering the challenges brought about by the COVID 19 as the pandemic has brought little to no disruption of the various programmes and activities. This has been made possible through technology and various innovations which have continued to make the School achieve excellence on all fronts.

University education provides a competitive edge in the career market. As a saying by Francis Bacon goes “knowledge is power”, the importance of this power cannot be over emphasized. The School of Education, Social Sciences and Technology is one of the sources of such power for it exposes students to new research, information and technology that encourages creativity and independent thought to conquer intellectual challenges and build initiative with excellence. The School is the hub of knowledge, entrepreneurship and innovation which the University uses to impart lifelong skills in the students.

The School aims at producing graduates that are able to positively add to the development of the country and that are able to make a difference even in the face of COVID-19 by seizing opportunities that come with it. The School is hopeful that this will increase dependency on ourselves as a country and promote value addition to our local resources.

The School consists of zealous and well experienced experts in various fields who teach our courses not only theoretically but practically as well. This enables the students to gain an understating of how to apply what is learnt to the real world.

The world has been turned upside down by a global pandemic and graduating is a big achievement under any circumstances whether That’s Africanacity. That’s Absa. virtual or live. Graduating in such conditions requires one to be focused, responsible and disciplined. absa.co.zm In July 2016, at 17 years old I commenced my studies in Political Science and International Relations at the University of Lusaka. For as long as I can remember I have always been the youngest, female Muslim in any room. My academic journey has not been smooth sailing, no matter how hard Daily and transaction limits along with Ts and Cs apply. you work in your life, there will be times when things don’t go according to Absa Bank Zambia PLC (registered number 119710006444) is regulated by the Bank of Zambia. 25 Passion for Quality Education: Our Driving Force plans.

Sometimes everything would seem to be working against you and make you feel like you have failed. My dissertation topic was modified uncountable times reason being ‘topics on Refugees are particularly a sensitive issue.’ I lost my father right after my final exams and amidst the worst feelings of grief, finding the motivation to continue my dissertation felt impossible. However, my parents’ encouragement throughout my life was a reminder, a reason to go forward, to conquer all odds and persist in any circumstance life throws at you.

When I reflect on my four years at UNILUS, I conclude that the experience not only made me a political science graduate, but also prepared me in unpredictable ways for my career to conquer any situation that comes my way. My University life at UNILUS was full of incredibly supportive classmates and Lecturers who were nothing short of champions.

Christopher Mukuzunga Sinyangwe – BSc in Real Estate Management

It has not been easy to study on self- sponsorship with all the responsibilities that come with being a family person, employee and pressure of Distance Learning. I failed in some courses and had to repeat them before moving on to the next semester. This would have discouraged me but it made me more determined to complete my studies. It has taken me almost eight years to complete a four year Programme.

My time at the University of Lusaka left me with an open mind and made me see the important opportunities available to make a difference in my field. I was motivated to pursue Real Estate Management because of the many opportunities this qualification offers me in private practice. I also knew that my newly acquired skills would enhance my work understanding while with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

I would advise anyone anytime that it does not matter your age or what job you hold, education is the key to success and that no matter what challenges one faces during their period of study and long it takes them, they must never give up, instead they should be determine to complete their studies and graduate. UNILUS has passed onto us the graduands the torch of knowledge and wisdom to conquer not only the new normal but even beyond through Technology, innovation and excellence.

Sentala Bernard – BSc in Information Technology with Education

I enrolled at University of Lusaka in January 2015 for a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems and Technology with Education (BITED), and today am graduating. The years spent at UNILUS have been full of learning opportunities that were full of fun and sometimes with academic difficulties. The exposure to a lot of courses makes one a better hybrid student to face most of the challenges of the corporate world in Information Systems and Technology. Today’s generation is dependent on technology, innovation and excellence, which are the tools BITED Students have been equipped with to conquer any

26 Passion for Quality Education: Our Driving Force opportunity. The Programme exposed me to modern industry endeavors in Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) from which I have shaped my career as per my interest. I must say that the University has proved to be a very well executed precursor in my career growth.

The University of Lusaka is a beautiful place where individuals from different nationalities and races meet to share one common goal known as Education. The Knowledge gained will enable me to contribute towards the effectiveness and efficiency of the Zambia Air Force and development of mother Zambia “Thanks to the University of Lusaka.”

27 Passion for Quality Education: Our Driving Force OPEN AND DISTANCE LEARNING IN THE NEW NORMAL

The University of Lusaka has been offering Programmes on Open and Distance Learning since 2009. With the advent of Covid-19 this year the majority of students have been accessing learning using this mode. The department has made adjustments to its traditional way of having residential classes to virtual classes which have proved to be effective and beneficial to students under this mode. Further, the challenges that came with Covid-19 accelerated the Departments implementation of the e-learning platforms.

It must be appreciated that Covid-19 is still with us for as long as a vaccine is not found, hence, Open and Distance learning will remain a major part of learning. It is in this regard that the University has and will continue to invest in technological infrastructure that will facilitate and improve teaching and learning.

The new platforms have enhanced the interaction between faculty and students as there is constant communication throughout the semester as compared to the past were students had to come for residential classes. Furthermore, this will increase the capacity of the University to make higher education accessible and convenient to prospective local and international students without compromising provision of quality education.

The vision of the department is to continue being innovative as it adapts to the “new normal”.

“Conquering Beyond the New Normal through Technology, Innovation and Excellence”

28 Passion for Quality Education: Our Driving Force SCHOOL OF POSTGRADUATE

DR. CHIPASHA MULENGA // EXECUTIVE DEAN The School of Postgraduate was established with a mandate of providing high level organisational, managerial as well as research and analytical skills to graduates who have undertaken programmes with the University. As the founding School of the University, its establishment is critical to creating capacity to providing solutions in various sectors of the industry.

The ‘New Normal’ in which the school has found itself facing unique challenges means that new ideas are necessary if the School is to continue being relevant. This year’s graduation theme: ‘Conquering beyond the New Normal through Technology, Innovation and Excellence’ challenges the school to direct its efforts in seeking innovative solutions in its delivery of its Programmes. This year, the School has made significant use of technology in its activities which has made it possible for students and faculty to continue teaching and interacting remotely. This was facilitated through the investments made by the University in technological infrastructure such as smart boards, tablets, internet gadgets and online learning platforms which include Moodle, Google Meet and Zoom. For this to be effective faculty were trained to mark and grade all the work through eLearning platforms.

This innovative use of technology and space allowed students and staff of the University to stay safe as well as save on logistical costs and time which was appreciated.

To uphold excellence in our service delivery, the school has continued to engage qualified and experienced faculty comprising of teaching staff, researchers, consultants and local & international senior scholars in various fields. As a result, students gain exposure which sharpen their minds and promote positive contribution in the various careers.

In particular the Executive MBA Programme allows students to tap into their entrepreneurial skills which they can utilize to open and manage existing business ventures and thereby contribute to the growth of the economy which is critical in these difficult times.

TESTIMONIALS FROM STUDENTS

WILLIAM MANGIMELA,

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT

University of Lusaka gave me the opportunity to acquire practical project management knowledge and skills essential in every aspect of managing a project. Working for the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Department in the Ministry of Finance where we promote, facilitate, implement and monitor the procurement, contracting and delivery of

29 Passion for Quality Education: Our Driving Force public infrastructure and social services for the country through partnerships between public sector and private sector entities, pursuing a Master of Science in Project Management was one of my life’s best decision as it gave me the requisite skills I needed to function in my job competently.

I graduated as the best student and I was awarded a scholarship by InnoLead Consulting, the Scholarship was worth $1,300 to study Project Management Professional (PMP)® Certification credential by the Project Management Institute (PMI), USA. PMP is a global and most important industry-recognised certification for project managers. Thanks to University, I have been able to acquire both my Master of Science in Project Management and PMP credential and now can demonstrate that I have the experience, education and competency to successfully lead and direct projects.

Dr. Galatia Dyson, PhD in Project Management

My career path has taken a different route after graduating from University of Lusaka with a PhD. Immediately after graduating, I was offered a job with NEVSAN Gold of Canada (among many offers) to head the Engineering Department at one of its biggest Mines, Bisha Gold Mine which comes with the responsibility of heading over 300 engineering personnel from different countries, Asia, Europe, America, Australia and Africa. The knowledge gained from my PhD has helped me in managing this role with no difficulties and my analytical and report writing skills have proved the integrity of my PhD. Further, the four Articles I have published in mining through the International Journal of Science and Research have introduced me to various mining professionals of high calibre around the globe, which is a rear opportunity.

From this achievement, I must mention that, the quality of education provided by the University of Lusaka cannot go unnoticed. My only appeal is that, the Government of the Republic of Zambia and graduates at large to continue making use of the knowledge gained from the Universities to develop various sectors of the local industry, more especially through Research and Development.

It found a lack of adherence to prescribed guidelines on the utilisation of the Equalisation Funds, with an emphasis on spending on personal emoluments than on capital improvements. The study established that local authorities lack adequate technical, administrative, and financial capacity to provide public services to the growing populations within their boundaries, and therefore developed mechanisms for the redesigning of the fiscal architecture and the strengthening of financial management in LocalAuthorities. Thesis Title: Microfinance Accessibility and Small Enterprise Financial Performance: Case of Harare, Zimbabwe’.

Doctoral Citation

This study sought to propose a small enterprise microfinancing framework for microfinance institutions (MFIs) with a view to bolstering small enterprise financial performance. The findings of the study revealed that although a significant number of small enterprises still encounter difficulties in accessing microfinance services, particularly microcredit, microfinance has a positive impact on the financial performance of small enterprises in Zimbabwe. Thesis Title: Legal, Regulatory and Institutional Aspects of Cross-Border Trade in Securities: The Case of Eastern and Southern Africa.

Doctoral Citation

The thesis explored the impact of legal, regulatory and institutional aspects on cross-border trade securities in Eastern and Sothern Africa. The study revealed that determining the substantive property law, and mutual recognition of listing documents and securities advertisements increase cross-border trade securities in the Common Market of eastern and southern Africa. It provides an original contribution to the existing scholarship on cross-border trade in securities. The study also demonstrates that share transfer agents and branch registers of company issuers are likely to increase legal uncertainty and transaction costs for cross-border securities deals. The study revealed that regional integration of domestic payment systems speeds up the settlement of cross-border securities trades, reduces transaction costs and ease the liquidity challenges that are faced by securities markets in the region.
