At work he would often work well beyond midnight helping a farming colleague out after working a full day and more himself, and he seemingly never saw the negative or bad in people, and that is a gift. However Lynn has said that he might be heard just occasionally to swear at one or two of the cows if he thought no one was listening. For their holidays, in addition to their caravanning exploits, they travelled a great deal. In Europe including Corfu and Tenerife and to places in the United States including Hawaii. They had good days out in this country too. Memorably just a month ago at Alton Towers – when Norman insisted on riding the ‘Runaway Train’ just as he had in times past at Disney World in Florida. It was rainy old day and Lynn and Lucy wrapped his legs in bin-bags as he rocked and rolled around sitting in his wheel chair, listening to ‘Status Quo’ on the public address system. But their favourite place was Tenerife, to where they went back on several occasions and most recently in March this year. There, Norman saw his most favourite boat – ‘Blackjack’, a beautiful 70ft ketch. Blackjack had the loveliest of lines, and Norman thought about that boat just as Lynn and Norman felt about each other, they were to each other ‘simply the best’. We can be certain that Norman, now free of all his pain is now resting on the gentle seas of heaven, or perhaps looking out over the sea there from the fields of heaven.

AFFPUDDLE/BRIANTSPUDDLE NEWS

VILLAGE HALL NEWS

The Summer months have been a quiet time as far as Village Hall Activities are concerned and the opportunity has been taken to renovate the electrical wiring in the hall itself and to introduce a more sympathetic and user friendly lighting system. When the work is finished the system will be up to date to comply with modern requirements.

At the moment work is not being done in the kitchen or W.C.s as it is hoped that it will not be too long before it will be possible to build a new kitchen, storage facility and the W.C.'s including a disabled toilet.

The Hall improvement work is being held up. Permission from the Purbeck District Council Planning Department is required for an essential minor amendment to the plans. This requires the agreement of all the neighbours. For reasons beyond the control of the Hall Committee it has not been possible to secure this agreement.

Unfortunately until the Planning Permission is finalised the Briantspuddle Hall Committee cannot start applying for grant funding. In order to apply for grants full planning permission has to be in place.

PILATES CLASS

The Pilates class begins again on Tuesday September 7th, in Briantspuddle Village Hall. It starts at 9.45 and runs for 1 hour each Tuesday. Michelle Goodman who is a fully qualified instructor from the Purbeck Sports Centre teaches us. Pilates is a rather more energetic form of Yoga and it is particularly good for strengthening the back and core body muscles. If you would like to know more , ring me on 471200 or just turn up for a taster class. Everyone from both parishes and locality is very welcome. Vivi Armitage. 471200

Bere Regis CC, Centenary Week One of the major milestones in the history of Bere Regis arrived on January 1, 2004 and will leave on December 31. The Centenary of Bere Regis CC is upon us, and the committee decided on having a ‘cricket week’ as part of the major celebration of the event. A commemorative publication has been produced in an attempt to capture the scene both past and present for members and visitors to the ground. The net was cast far and wide for contributions to the yearbook and gracious thank yous must be recorded in favour of Mr John Hyde, Mr Steve Cooper and ex-Chairman Duffy Pearce (not to mention the committee) for their efforts in filling out the pages. The yearbook can still be bought from the Sports Clubhouse or at local shops, priced £2.99. For the cricket week, it was decided to stage the cricket fest between 17 & 25 July and fingers were crossed from around late December 2003 that the weather would oblige. It duly did and Bere had a glorious week of cricketing weather. For the record, the scores were as follows:

The report was agreed but concern was expressed as to whether the recommended total of twenty four units should be provided as one OFSTED Registered scheme. The Council was of the opinion that the units should be built incrementally on in-fill sites. Councillors were therefore tasked with finding suitable in-fill sites around the Village. Mrs Brookes reported that she has many letters concerning the use by four X four Full/Part Time vehicles and motor cycles on our bridleways. These letters, from mainly urban addresses, call for greater access to our bridleways. The Council is deeply vacancies concerned of these intrusions on our peaceful countryside and advised our MP accordingly. Clearly there is a big move afoot by people wishing to drive on the ancient ways in or on unsuitable vehicles and Council asks that anybody who 0 - 8 years objects, to the thought of such intrusion, should lobby the MP by letter. DRAX HALL

The Hall Committee is grateful to everybody who has contributed to their appeal of ‘Pound per Person’. Approximately £200 has been collected to date. Also the Committee is grateful to the Pop in Place team for organizing the Open Gardens which generated £1,165 for improvements to the Hall. DRAX We are confident now that sufficient funds are available for the works to be undertaken. The total that we have been HALL aiming at is £12, 000 and though a little short at present the Committee feels able to proceed so the Hall will be closed after Thursday 16 th September and will re-open on the 1 st October – with new toilets, a water tight roof, a new fire door upstairs and a wheelchair friendly access and escape route from downstairs.

We are extremely fortunate that there is a concert on 4 th September – ‘Light ‘n Shade’ – that has been offered to us totally free. Thus all of the proceeds will be going to the Hall and the necessary works. As I write this there are some tickets available and you are advised to call Alison Bennett on 472023 if you wish to attend. It should be a very good concert and remember that one of the four guys and four girls that make up this vocal group came from Bere Regis. You will be treated to close harmonies and splendid vocal solos from a group that regularly tours Dorset and Hampshire. Another date for your diary – Saturday 13th November, Table Top Sale in the Hall.

Laughter... and Tears BARBECUE The highlight of August in our Congregational Chapel was undoubtedly the children's Holiday Club with its theme of "WAY OUT WEST"! Thanks to the creative skills of our local team we were able to transform the front of the Chapel into Bere Creek, a fictional pioneer town, and Auction featuring a Sheriffs Office complete with "saloon bar' swing doors and a credible jailhouse! We have a small Junior Church on a Sunday so the three days of midweek activity was a of Promises venture of faith - and the Lord richly rewarded us! We had forty-two children attend, most of whom came on all three days. They joined in enthusiastically with the singing, led by 'Sunny' (a Muppet type puppet) assisted by Suzie Gee. We all attempted line dancing and had a laugh as the lines got a bit wobbly!! There were shrills of support for the team games - the Red Roosters against the Blue Buffalos - which included lassoing a runaway steer (ingeniously on Saturday 11th September created and mounted on the frame of a dolls pram by Jennie White) and the chuck wagon race (also the invention of the aforementioned lady). 12 noon at Whites Cottage, The daily drama of life in Bere Creek featured members of our congregation as you have never BLOXWORTH seen them before. John Pitman as the Sheriffs deputy "Luke" could have stepped out of a John Wayne movie! The drama reached a dramatic conclusion on Sunday morning when the Judge came to town for the trial of ace baddie 'Slimey Pete' (brilliantly played by our deacon Ivan Stevens) and in an act of love and forgiveness pardoned the bad guy and Tickets £5.00 went to prison in his place. As Sunny commented to the children, " one man who had done no wrong, took the place of one who was guilty". This gave me an opportunity to share something of the free pardon that God offers to us all through His Son Jesus. The Western-style Family available from telephone no. 459523 Service was well attended and concluded with the awarding of prizes for the Holiday Club competition winners. We thank Mrs Betty King for graciously presenting the prizes, (full list of winners appears at the end of this page) The whole week was played out against a background of personal heartache for some of the team. On the opening day the grandson of one of our team tragically died a few days after his BERE REGIS FLORAL GROUP birth. And towards the end of the week dear May Pitman, John's mother, went to be with the Lord. Another team member had to pull out because her father had had a stroke. So it was very much a challenge to press on, and behind the fun and laughter with the children a few tears were shed and a lot of prayers were offered up to the Lord. The September meeting will be very nice as a few of our This month is Harvest and we look forward to celebrating it in fine style with a special visit members, who are expert arrangers, are going to be from .The Campaign Singers, a 16 strong team of singers, musicians, dramatists and demonstrating, their subject will be "Vibrant Variations" puppeteers who will come to share something of God's love at Harvest Time. 60 25 September 2004 September 2004 COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT FOR THE ECHO

This is just a reminder that I am Community Correspondent for the Dorset Echo at Weymouth. If you have any events that you would like to advertise more widely, the Community News Page is the ideal way to do it without cost. It is amazing how widely the Community News page is read. People who used to live in the village and who still live in the paper’s circulation area read it, people who just like to know what goes on in other villages read it, and there are many people who simply read the Echo from cover to cover each evening. I would love to hear from you with any sort of local news – the results of fundraising events, a bit of publicity for your club or organisation, special anniversaries, Quality Tax and personal achievements – anything that you think would be interesting. Licensing The Licensing Act is due to become operational on the 7 th February 2005. Under the Act the Police will still have the responsibility of monitoring licensed establishments and lodging objections where they wish to. However the power to grant licenses will now be part of the Council’s responsibilities. Along with this there

28 57 September 2004 September 2004

are reforms of the licensing hours introducing flexible opening hours with the potential for up to 24 Hours opening. However there are still some areas of uncertainty including the cost of licenses which have not yet been fixed by the government. To help village halls and other establishments the Licensing Officer and I will be holding a series of seminars around the District in October and November to explain in detail the legislation and (hopefully) to ally some of the fears about the new Act. More when I know the dates.

Purbeck Shooting School The Ombudsman has reviewed a complaint of maladministration against Purbeck District Council’s with respect to their handling of the Planning application and the renewal of the school’s operating licence. The Ombudsman has produced an interim report which finds no evidence of maladministration. The School will now operate normally but will still be subject to random sound checks to ensure that they stay within the 55 Decibels limit allowed for them. The bund that the school built to deaden the noise has been deemed sufficient and no further building work is now required of them.

SWIMMING LESSONS

If you are looking for a friendly local swimming club to teach your child to swim, then look no further than the Bere Regis Swimming Club. We are a primarily a teaching club but do participate in the occasional friendly gala with other clubs and also hold our own annual gala. We also run one or two special evenings for the children to learn other swimming skills such as water polo, diving, synchronised swimming. We also arrange family events: our annual BBQ, family swims and a day out to West Moors. The Club has been established more than 28 years and was the first in Dorset to gain accreditation from the ASA Swim 21 Scheme, which is a nationally recognised club development scheme. We are now teaching the children of those who learnt to swim in the early years! We teach every Saturday evening during term times at Blandford Leisure Centre in two sessions from 6.00-6.45 pm for beginners and from 6.45-7.30 pm for improvers. It costs only £1.50 per session with an annual membership fee of £5.00 to cover insurance. Our first session of the Autumn Term begins on Saturday, 11th September. For further information please call Bob Holman on 01305 848262 or Simon Trenchard on 01929 472148.
