On 15 April 1837 Francis Voisin opened Voisin & Company, a haberdashery shop, at 26 King Street which revolutionised the way Islanders shopped. In that year, the first of Queen Victoria’s reign, clothes were handmade to measure so this new store, selling the latest fashion items and a variety of new materials, soon became the place to shop. Today, as Voisins celebrates its 175th anniversary, the business still occupies the original property as well as several neighbouring ones which have been acquired by its founder and subsequent generations as the store expanded. Voisins is still family-owned and with current proprietor Gerald being the sixth generation to have run the store. His son Edward has also recently joined the business. At a time when the future of the ‘high street’ is prominent on the local business agenda, under review by leading UK retail professionals, and being debated in the House of Commons, this long-established locally- owned store has a great deal to celebrate and of which to be justifiably proud. To celebrate the rich retail heritage of this Island ‘institution’ a number of activities are planned throughout the year. Significantly the introduction of new brands and a revamp of the menswear department further demonstrates how Voisins continues evolving to safeguard its future for the next 175 years. Gerald Voisin describes the 175th anniversary as a wonderful opportunity to look back over Voisins’ history while also looking forward. ‘We pride ourselves on maintaining strong traditional values, but our main focus is always on the future and on responding to economic factors to ensure Voisins remains relevant to Islanders. We strive to be Jersey’s leading fashion store providing excellent customer service in an inspiring environment,’ he said. The secret of Voisins’ success story is one of constant evolution driven by knowing the local market and understanding that Islanders desire quality, value for money, contemporary and highly stylish brands. ‘As a local store, we face competition from national and multinational retailers setting up business in Jersey, internet sales and the economic recession. Because of this, we are continuously adapting and changing,’ said Gerald Voisin. ‘We have done this by looking for products with a wide appeal and by enhancing the shopping experience through the maintenance of high standards of customer service. We are always on the look-out for products and brands that appeal to the Jersey market.’ Activities organised to celebrate Voisins’ 175th anniversary include: • Local artist Ian Rolls to capture the King Street aspect of Voisins in a commemorative piece of artwork • Staff party at The Royal Yacht Hotel on 14 April • Photographic archives on display in Café 1837 and celebration window displays • A celebration birthday cake will be cut by Gerald Voisin on Thursday 5 April. Islanders, past staff and shoppers are invited to enjoy a slice of cake in Café 1837 throughout the day • Account customers’ VIP evening in October withs Veronica Fox of the Société Jersiaise who will make a presentation of fashion from 1837 to the present day. • Staff fundraising for 2012 dedicated to the Jersey Women’s Refuge. • Voisins will launch its very own limited edition Bag for Life with proceeds going to Jersey Women’s Refuge. f Page 14 The April 2012 Town Crier St Helier's three twins The twinning of towns was conceived as a way of helping to unite and heal a war-torn Europe at the end of the Second World War; French and British towns began forming special relationships with German towns in the 1950s. All of Jersey's twelve parishes have a Norman twin town (or a Breton one in the case of St Clement) and St Helier was one of the first to create a jumelage thirty years ago. Ten years ago St Helier was twinned with Bad Wurzach, a small town in the south of Germany in which more than 600 islanders were interned during the Occupation, while this month the Parish's Below: St Helier schools regularly visit their decision in 2007 to seek a twinning with Funchal in Madeira will bear fruit. ‘twins’ in Avranches The 'Jumelage' with Avranches History of the twinning On Wednesday 23 June, 1982, the Parish Assembly was asked ‘to accept the invitation and formally become ‘twinned’ with that town, this for cultural, educational and social exchanges.’ Sid Proudley, Procureur, proposed the twinning which was seconded by the Dean, the Very Rev Tom Goss. The initiative came from the Conseil Municipal de la Ville d’Avranches, and was supported by the Constable of St Helier, Peter Baker; the Honorary Consul for France, Monsieur Jean-Jacques Roos, and Senator Reg Jeune. According to the JEP report of the meeting, 'only a handful of parishioners turned up to vote on the twinning proposal (and) they were overwhelmingly in favour of Plans for 2012 the plan' although ‘one voice of dissent was raised, that of Mr As this is the thirtieth anniversary year of the jumelage there Gordon Journeaux, who said that he was vehemently opposed are several special events planned, including the ‘Nuits des to any sort of link with France.’ The twinning was formally agreed Jumelage’ hosted by Avranches in October. Left: The Band of the Island of Jersey making an impressive appearance in Bad Wurzach Fitness fix By Nikki Zachariou If you put your mind to something your body will follow… I know that eating clean and training mean improves your quality of life, your shape and how you feel about your body. We all know that! So why do so many people still struggle with losing weight and committing to a fitness programme? In a nutshell some people just do not want to change…yet! I know this because I was like that once. Three years ago I was a size 14, my mum was a personal trainer and I myself had done fitness training. I knew what I had to do to, but I just didn’t do it. Why? Because I didn’t want it badly enough. It’s only when someone really wants to change that they breakthrough and really see results. Excuses like: ‘I can’t stop eating chocolate,’ or ‘I’m not a natural runner,’ or ‘It’s too expensive to get fit’ are all signs that someone just doesn’t want it bad enough. I made many of these excuses and probably a lot more to be honest (My favourite one is I’m addicted to chocolate – which is utter rubbish as I haven’t eaten chocolate since the beginning of lent – I was just too lazy to try and stop buying it every time I went into a shop). My excuses kept me in a place that wasn’t true of what I could actually achieve. Tell yourself everyday ‘I am someone who eats healthy food.’ ‘I am someone who goes to exercises classes three times a week no matter what,’ ‘I am someone who will feel amazing this year on the beach’ ‘When I work out I work hard.’ Once you put your mind to something your body will follow. A recent blog post of mine extolling the merits of the electric car raised some eyebrows. There are still quite a few people who consider me ‘anti car’ just because I happen to ride a bicycle at times. Actually, the breakdown of my travel habits, on island, is probably about 40% on foot, 40% by car and 15% by bicycle and 5% by bus. Variety being the spice of life, it’s surely important that we make all modes of transport as cheap and convenient as possible, which is why the Roads Committee, which I chair, spends so much time trying to balance the needs of motorists, motorcyclists, delivery vehicle drivers, cyclists, disabled drivers, and pedestrians. Walking and cycling, especially in this spring weather, is certainly worth recommending, being good for our health as well as being good for the environment, and needing less space when it comes to parking, but not everyone is able to walk or cycle to work, school, shops and so on, and a tolerant society like ours should accept that people have the right to choose providing safer routes for pedestrians and cyclists in the congested town to travel how they wish, and provide a balance of facilities. area especially so that the most vulnerable road users, children and the elderly, can move about in freedom and safety.
