China’s passenger vehicle market continues to grow at a blistering rate, with sales through the first four months of the year up 60%. The luxury segment grew the fastest, up 159%, though this can largely be attributed to a recent tax hike on larger engined vehicles which drove consumers to buy prior to the April 1st deadline.

China Automotive Report - Executive Summary ------May 2006 1-3 Passenger Car Imports Market Summary

Passenger vehicle imports jumped 97% through the first quarter of 2006 with a total of 44,615 cars and SUVs arriving from overseas. Japan remains the largest source of foreign vehicles, followed by Germany. The cause of this large jump in imports could be down to the increase in excise tax for large engined vehicles, which was implemented at the end of the first quarter.
