Once the World Sports Games Tortosa 2019 have ended, what have they contributed to Catalonia? The WSG were an important social and economic return to Tortosa and Terres de l’Ebre and a strong micro­ economic impact on the area as well. We also have managed to show the importance of the amateur sport or popular sport to our citizenship and the administrations. It has been important to demonstrate that sport must be open to everyone and everyone must have the right to practice it even if it isn’t federated sport.

Do you consider that the WSG Tortosa 2019 have been a model event for amateur Catalan sports? It’s a way forward. We think that the WSG are (more or less) a copy of the federated model. The Catalan sportive model wants to go forward to create a model for everyone: activities that allow women and men to play together, gender equality. We should consider the health and consequently adapt all competitions for all ages. Finally, we must find the way that all athletes can play in equal conditions (to play the same number of times, to play during a concrete time…). Our aim with this model is to have fun playing with all values different from the federated model whose only objec- tives are the sport results.

How do you value the work of all volunteers? It has been formidable. Without them the WSG Tortosa 2019 wouldn’t have been possible. They have worked a lot and very well. Without volunteers the popular sport has no future, his work has been an example of responsible people, committed to their community. A great example of citizenship.

These games have been touched by fair-play, coexistence, friendship and solidarity … Yes. These are the most important aspects of the World Sports Games. In this sense, they are a good world refer- ence for the values of sport. Sport has a universal language that allows the cultural mix and mutual knowledge of different countries, different ethnic groups and different cultures. The WSG make it possible.

Do you consider if is it possible to organize any event of this magnitude in the future? We’re working on this in two projects: The Young Games and the Mediterranean Games. Firstly, young people are the future and we think that organize a specific competition for them it’s a good way to work with all values we talked about it. And secondly, for the Mediterranean Games, we believe that this event would help the whole area to understand what is happening with immigrations and the situation in many countries. Sport may be an element of mutual understanding and mutual knowledge.
