President I had the privilege of joining several EWI friends and family Karen Kuhn, Federal Reserve members at the Richmond Raiders game on June 6. Elizabeth Bank of Richmond

These young men and women know how to engage the kids in a little fun, while still emphasizing the importance of learning. Through our Secretary Essie Weiss EWI partnership with the Richmond Raiders, we had a chance to see the positive Legacy of influence the team members are making through Project Impact. Thanks to Debbie and Wayne Clark, Michele, John and Melissa Rundstrom, Donna and Larry Edwards, Toni Treasurer Karen Huffman, Federal Bastian, Benita Oladele, Karen Huffman and her girls Kennedy and Madison, Kathleen Reserve Bank of Richmond and Sunny Stull, Dee Dee and Dave Van Buren, and Ann and Kevin Bushey for giving your time to these terrific kids. Professional Development

Leadership tips from Dr. Heather Williamson, Transformation Group, LLC

Four Critical Tasks Of Strategic Execution

Business owners and CEO's have a difficult job all the way around. The success of the company relies upon a combination of things. If Celebrity Apprentice has taught us anything, it's that the one in charge is usually to blame for the loss of the team.

As the one in charge, it is your job to make certain that your company has a strategic plan in place. It isn't enough just to have a plan. You have to make it happen.

Create a Vision and Make it Known

Before you can really delve into putting together a plan, you must identify your company's goals. What is your vision? Once you have a vision and an idea in place of what you want to do, it will make developing a plan a more productive task.

Once you have the vision together, you should make it known to your staff and team. There should be no doubt as to the company's vision.

Develop a Flexible Strategic Plan

We can sit around the meeting table and put together the best strategic plan around. However, you have to be willing to follow buying trends and other data, then change your plan as needed to reach the consumer market.

This requires you and your team to stay flexible in your way of thinking. Don't assume that because everyone in the room agrees that it is a good plan that the plan will work. It is going to require tweaking once you put it into the real world.

Adopt Accountability Within the Team

Good intentions fail if no one is held accountable. Simply saying you will execute a plan as laid out is not good enough. It's like building a spending budget, and then not tracking your spending.

Put into place accountability for yourself and others on the team. Make sure that the plan is being executed in the way you have determined.

Instill a Sense of Ownership in Your Team

If you want to execute your plan, you have to give the team a sense of ownership. If you want them to give it their all, they have to feel responsible and that their work matters.

Give employees the ability to share their concerns or problems with the plan. Use their feedback as a way to change your strategic plan if need be. Allow for discussion and listen to their thoughts.

If you are going to be successful, it will take your entire team to make that happen. It starts with you and your commitment to developing a plan and executing it.

Developing Teams And Individuals

Being a manager is much more than overseeing day to day tasks. In order for your business to be successful, developing the individuals and turning them into a team is a main priority. You can only grow as much as your staff will allow. Weak team members can bring down the production in your company. Develop Individuals through a Variety of Means Before you can build a team, you have to work toward developing each staff person's abilities. Take the time necessary to make certain they have proper training to do their job. Here are a few ways you can do this:  Pay For Training - Find a training event that the staff person can attend. Be sure to help them understand this training is important to their continued employment at your company. All too often, employees will blow off training events and look at the day as a free day. They might be tempted to attend only a portion of the day. It should be clearly understood they are expected to attend all parts of the training session and provide you with a report of what they learned.  Let Them Be a Shadow - Allow a less experienced individual to shadow more experienced people within the company. They can see first-hand how a more experienced individual handles situations. The more experienced person should understand it is their responsibility to fill in training gaps the shadow is missing. The shadow should understand this is not to insult their abilities, but rather to help them be a better employee.  Give Valuable Reviews - Everyone benefits from receiving valuable feedback on their performance. The reason behind the review is not to point out every wrong thing the staff person does. Rather, it should give positive feedback in appropriate areas, as well as outline guidelines of where they need to improve.

Turn a Group of Individuals Into a Team

It is important to take development of your staff to the next step. You have to take the individuals and build a team. This can be a difficult task when you deal with many personality types. Here are a few ways to bring a group together:

 Establish a United Goal - Without a well-defined goal your staff has fewer chances of becoming a team. Teams have a common goal they are trying to reach together. For example, a team has the goal of winning the game. That looks very different to each member. It is the job of the coach to cast the vision of how the task will get accomplished. That is your role, be the coach of the team.  Get Team Together Outside of Work Hours - Most people are different when they are at work versus a social situation. Having a get together on a quarterly basis will give your staff a different perspective on those people. In particular, this can help personality types that have a hard time getting along with one another.

These are a few things that you should do to develop and lead your team. As a manager, you are more like a coach then a task master.
