Welcome! TERRY JOYCE This booklet goes out to clergy, readers (including PTO’s) and RPA’s, and for the benefit of others, is available to view on the diocesan website. This reflects our pattern over recent years of embracing more people in training. There are some key changes in the way that this booklet is laid out this time. Firstly, as the three

LYNN COMER LYNN strands of our diocesan strategy become more familiar – reaching, growing and sustaining, we have laid out our training events under the same headings. Not everything lines up perfectly and we’ve been flexible and broader in interpretation of the categories, but we hope this will be helpful. Secondly, we continue to expand the ‘Ready to Go!’ category introduced last year. Just to remind you that as well as the events offered at specific times and places within the training programme and this booklet, we also have resources that can be deployed anywhere in the diocese as you request. There is a specific section within the booklet on this. Thirdly, with this booklet, we are introducing Eventbrite as our booking system for most of our events. This will make a considerable difference to the administration within our training team. There is more information on the opposite page under ‘How to Book’, and to make it as easy as possible, the diocesan website will provide the necessary Eventbrite link which will list all the bookable events. For those who do not use the internet, the traditional methods of contact will still be available. Finally, please make these training resources known more widely by signposting others to the online copy of this booklet on the diocesan website – search ‘Training Resources for Ministry’. Tuesday 12th February 2019; 9.30am-4pm Diocesan Office, Amy Johnson Way, Clifton Moor, York YO30 4XT 10 OPEN TO ALL LEADING IN EVANGELISM 11 In June 2013, in a paper written to provoke wide discussion in the CofE, , now Bishop of Oxford wrote: “How should we lead and guide the Church in this aspect of our life (evangelism) given this challenging context? “We need to be realistic about the challenges. We need to practice and live hope as a key virtue in leadership. We need to be deeply rooted in prayer and in the scriptures. We need to be aware that the leadership we offer individually and bishops, clergy and lay people sets a tone and makes a difference to the whole church. We need to prioritise thinking and reflection around this issue. We should beware of simplistic rhetoric and easy solutions. We need a richer dialogue on evangelization and growing the Church… It is also possible that, as individuals and as a body, we see the complexity of the call to grow the Church and we are in danger of being overwhelmed by that complexity. We need to cherish humility before one another and before God in this area: this is not something we know how to do”. Canon John Holmes has served as a missioner in the Ripon Diocese and the ‘missionary diocese of ’, which was about encouraging and equipping churches to be evangelistic and be more confident in sharing the gospel. Since retirement from full-time ministry, he continues to act as a mission consultant in several dioceses as well as a mentor and speaker. He has written two Grove Booklets – ‘Vulnerable Evangelism – the way of Jesus’ and ‘Challenging Questions for Churches wanting to grow’. He is a member of the College of Evangelists and has recently moved to live in Bridlington. This day is set up as one of our occasional ‘Advancing Leadership’ series of days for those who have completed the York Leadership Programme. But by nature of the subject, clergy who have been involved in the ‘Leading your Church into Growth Conferences’ are invited to attend the day as well as any other clergy or lay leaders who would find this day helpful. 16 GROWING 17 MEETING WITH PAIN This day will explore how we might learn to live abundantly, even if pain or dis-ease is a central feature of life. It will look at the issues that living with chronic pain can raise from the point of view of those who suffer and those who care for them or are alongside them in any capacity. Areas covered will include an overview of: • Healing and curing • Aspects of pain • The individual tools and skills we each have with which to meet pain • The major areas covered in the journey of meeting with pain • The importance of the ‘Why me..?’ sort of questions • Awareness and the mindfulness tradition in meeting with pain Led by Sr Rachel Overton, who is a solitary religious, living in Peterborough. Her professional background is in medicine and therapeutic counselling and currently works freelance in the areas of spiritual direction, retreat leading and spirituality as well as enabling people to live with chronic pain. Her interest in pain arose out of her own experiences of needing to learn how to ‘be’ in pain. ednesday 26th PREACHING THE GOSPEL OF LUKE 19 With a focus on Luke’s presentation of the Jesus story, we will examine some of the themes and emphases of the Gospel. In doing this we will engage with recent thinking and research on the Gospel, in preparation for the coming year where Luke’ Gospel will be the focus of our preaching. Led by Revd Canon Dr Chris Collingwood, Canon Chancellor at York Minster. Wednesday 14th November 2018; 7pm-9pm Diocesan Office, Amy Johnson Way, Clifton Moor, York YO30 4XT FOR CLERGY & READERS THE PLACE OF SILENCE IN DISCIPLESHIP A Christian response to mindfulness and meditation How can we connect again with what saints of old have referred to as ‘the first language of God, silence’? How can we connect our churches with the current and popular search for mindfulness and stillness and be fully Christian in our practice? These and other questions will be explored by the Revd Clay Roundtree, Vicar of Ingleby Barwick, who will draw from our rich heritage of meditation and contemplation from the example of Christ and in the early church and how these prayerful arts are being presented to the current generation through the World Community for Christian Meditation as well as through the Centre for Action and Contemplation and others. There will be a time of worship centred on a significant time of silence, with thoughts on how to begin a Christian Meditation group or a meditation group with children. This introductory ‘TA 101’ course will introduce you to the main concepts of TA, including the structure of personality, transactions – the way we relate to others, time structuring, psychological “games” we play, and life scripts. Course participants will have the opportunity to explore their personality and relationships through the theory of TA and a range of exercises. Led by Sarah Frettingham, an accredited teaching Transactional Analyst and is a UKCP Registered Psychotherapist. INTRODUCING CATECHESIS OF THE 25 GOOD SHEPHERD: TASTER SESSION Are you looking for a rich and meaningful way to work with children in the Christian faith aged 3-12 years? Come to this fascinating taster session and discover what the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd can offer. It is a Christian catechesis programme for children aged 3-12 years which enables them to experience and form an authentic relationship with God. The Catechesis is rooted in Scripture and the Liturgy of the Church and is inspired by Maria Montessori’s principles of education. It perceives the child not as an empty vessel ready to be instructed about God, but rather as someone who already has a deep relationship with God and who needs language and a space to help this relationship to grow. It invites the adult to move out of the role of teacher and serve instead as a co-listener and co- learner with the child before the word of God. Led by Dominic Black, Vicar of Holy Trinity North Ormesby and Catherine Reid, Vicar of the Ampleforth benefice. As a follow-on from our annual ‘Legal Matters’ Days for Curates and new first incumbents; those who are more established in ministry appreciate refresher sessions. In this session, our Registrar, Caroline Mockford will focus on changes in the law that clergy need to know about, including: Data Protection, Vesture, Ecumenical relations, Relaxation of the requirements to hold services and Faculty matters. There will also be time to raise any particular or general issues that you wish to discuss or ask about! Every time, participants leave having learnt loads that they didn’t know. This session is also purposely timed to be in the Annual Meeting season. Tuesday 2nd April 2019; 10am-3.30pm Stockton on the Forest Village Hall, Sandy Lane, York YO32 9UR PRIMARILY FOR CLERGY
