IN THE CHAIR: President

1. Resumption of the session

The sitting opened at 17.05.

2. Statements by the President

The President made a statement on the terrorist attacks in Paris the previous week. He read out the names of the seventeen people who had been killed in these attacks. He strongly condemned acts such acts against our freedoms and values and sent Parliament's condolences to the victims' families.

He also paid tribute to the victims of the latest murderous attack by Boko Haram in Nigeria.

Parliament observed a minute's silence.

3. Approval of the minutes of the previous sitting

The minutes of the previous sitting were approved.

4. Composition of Parliament

Following the death of Philip Bradbourn, Parliament established, under Rule 4(1), that his seat had been vacant since 21 December 2014. * * *

The Belgian authorities had announced the election to the of Hilde Vautmans to replace Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck and of Anneleen Van Bossuyt to replace Louis Ide as Members of the European Parliament with effect from 1 January 2015 and 8 January 2015 respectively.

In accordance with Article 7(1) of the Act of 20 September 1976 concerning the election of the Members of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage and Rule 4(1), Parliament took note of the election of Hilde Vautmans with effect from 1 January 2015 and of Anneleen Van Bossuyt with effect from 8 January 2015.

In accordance with Rule 3(2), until such time as their credentials had been verified or a ruling had been given on any dispute, and provided that they had previously made a written declaration stating that they did not hold any office incompatible with that of Member of the European Parliament, Hilde Vautmans and Anneleen Van Bossuyt would take their seats in Parliament and on its bodies and would enjoy all the rights attaching thereto. The following spoke: Heidi Hautala, on behalf of the Verts/ALE Group, giving reasons for the request, and Enrique Guerrero Salom, who supported the request and who proposed that the vote should be held during the February part- session.
