Sensory Synopsis for Shrek the Musical Sensory Synopsis for Shrek The Musical This is a sensory synopsis for Shrek The Musical. It is intended for parents, carers and teachers to help young people with sensory and communication needs prepare for the experience of attending the performance. This document aims to warn you of any sudden movements, loud noises and flashes of lights. ***Warning: This documents contains some information that could spoil the plot!*** Key: Where you see this symbol we are pointing out parts that might be EMOTIONAL Where you see this sign, we are flagging up parts that are LOUD, that might make you JUMP and that have dramatic changes in lighting. Act I: Story Scene: The beginning of the story introduces the idea of children leaving parents. Swamp Scene: The fairytale creatures enter with a song that is very LOUD. Shrek the Ogre is angry with the other creatures for having invaded his swamp. Journey Scene: Shrek roars at the guards; this is very LOUD. Shrek roars again, this time at Donkey. This is very LOUD. Dungeon Scene: The scene contains Lord Farquaad. The scene is a little dark and scary, characters are menacing. The Gingerbread Man is scared and crying. Lord Farquaad threatens to torture him. Duloc Scene: Lighting change. The scene changes from being in a very dark dungeon to very brightly lit front of Duloc castle. Shrek’s arrival in Duloc. He scares the people and there is a lot of screaming. This is very LOUD. Applause given to Shrek the raffle winner – you can join in if you want, it may be loud with sounds of clapping. Princess Fiona’s Tower: Princess Fiona’s song is very LOUD in parts. Quest Scene: Shrek and Donkey travel across a rickety bridge and lava pit. The scene can be quite scary. It is dark and there are flickering lights of lava and LOUD rumbling. Young people might also be scared for Donkey and Shrek’s safety. Dragons’ Keep Scene: DRAGON. The scenes containing the dragon can be quite scary. She is very LARGE and very LOUD . There is darkness, moving lights that resemble fire and some LOUD ROARS. Dragon captures Donkey and nearly captures Princess Fiona. Young people could become distressed for the characters (Don’t worry they escape un-hurt!) Shrek, Donkey and the knights battle Dragon. Large stones are pushed together to capture her. This noise is LOUD. The songs in the last part of the scene are very LOUD. -------------- INTERMISSION ---------------- Please note that the contents of this pack may be copied for internal purposes only and may not be altered in any way without the express permission of both the author and of Mousetrap Theatre Projects. Act II: Intro – curtain up – LOUD and lights will be dimmed. Forest Scene: A bird in a nest sings at a very high pitched level and then explodes. Deer’s antlers are pulled off and the deer is tossed off stage accidentally by Princess Fiona. Fiona is pushed by Shrek and screams, which is very LOUD and high pitched. Swamp Scene: The Fairytale Creatures sing a group song which is very LOUD. Wedding Scene: Shrek comes running through the auditorium and runs up on to the stage. For anyone sitting near this pathway it can be scary – he is very big and fast! There are scary lights, smoke and LOUD roar and the sound of glass breaking and crashing . The dragon attacks Lord Farquaard. Moving lighting is used as Princess Fiona changes into an ogre. Audience and cast may clap Fiona and Shrek at this point Curtain Call. The performers will bow and everyone will clap and cheer for them. This will be LOUD. Song – I’m A Believer . Audience members may be standing up, clapping, singing and waving/wearing flashy toys. That’s right, all ogres are destined to live lonely, miserable lives being chased by torch-wielding mobs who want to kill them. So the young Shrek set off, and eventually found a patch of swampland far away from the world that despised him. Many years pass, and the little ogre grows into a very big ogre, who has learned to love the solitude and privacy of his wonderfully stinky swamp (Big Bright Beautiful World.) Unfortunately, Shrek’s quiet little life is turned upside down when a pack of distraught Fairy Tale Creatures are dumped on his precious land. Pinocchio and his ragtag crew of pigs, witches and bears, lament their sorry fate, and explain that they’ve been banished from the Kingdom of Duloc by the evil Lord Farquaad for being freakishly different from everyone else (Story Of My Life.) Left with no choice, the grumpy ogre sets off left to right Jacob Ming-Trent to give that egotistical zealot a piece of his mind, and to Adam Riegler hopefully get his swamp back, exactly as it was.

    Lehmann 1 Sarah Lehmann Dr. Aaron Adair THTR 4013 1 May 2017 A Supposed Happily Ever After: A Shrek and Into the Woods Analysis As new musicals are created, playwrights often refer back to existing productions to draw inspiration and plots- a common phrase in the theatrical world known as “history repeats itself.” In Sondheim's Into the Woods and Lindsay-Abaire’s Shrek The Musical, there are multiple ​ ​ ​ ​ similarities between the two shows. Though vastly different in execution, these productions are ​ alike in plot content, humoristic style, and character development. Foremost, the most prominent correlation between the two shows is the plot. In both musicals, unlikely heroes go on a quest ordered by a hierarchy (for their benefit) and unknowingly break a spell. A singular example in Into the Woods is the Baker and the Baker’s ​ ​ wife going into the woods to find items in hopes of having a child. The Witch casts them out (to help her also gain her youth), and, in a triumph, they complete the task. Similarly, in Shrek the ​ Musical, when Shrek and Donkey are sent to rescue a princess by Lord Farquaad, it is the higher ​ power who ends up unsuccessful. Despite the contrast, the humor in each show is captivating. The writing “is extremely tight. [Meaning] that most scenes accomplish several functions simultaneously: moving the story Lehmann 2 forward, drawing us into the characters, making us laugh or sad or both simultaneously, setting up elements which will be revisited later on, and always entertaining us with highly original lines and scenes” (Freeman).

An ornery ogre, a peculiar princess, a talking donkey, a vertically- challenged villain and a love struck dragon are headed to The Rose Theater with the production of Shrek The Musical. The Broadway sensation, based on DreamWorks Animation’s 2001 blockbuster Shrek will run at The Rose, Sept. 30 through Oct. 15, 2016. The Rose is proud to announce the cast of Shrek The Musical. The cast consists of several Rose Theater favorites. Robby Stone (Honk, Peter & the Starcatcher, Big Nate, Jackie & Me) will bring the green ogre to life. Nik Whitcomb (Pete the Cat, Sherlock Holmes & the First Baker Street Irregular, Honk) plays Shrek’s sidekick Donkey. Princess Fiona will be played by Lauren Krupski (Cat in the Hat, Pete the Cat, A Christmas Story). Three Rose teaching artists will also be featured on stage: Brian Guehring (Robin Hood, Honk, Mary Poppins) as Lord Farquaad, Sue Gillespie Booton (Pete the Cat, Cat in the Hat) as Dragon, and Colleen Kilcoyne (Honk) as Gingy. Jean Valjean, prisoner 24601, asks himself these questions in the new stage musical at the Hippodrome Theatre based on Victor Hugo's novel, "Les Miserables." Set in France during the 1800s, it explores the world of second chances through the story of an ex-convict's new life as depicted through powerful sonic effects and exemplary visuals. “Starting over” is a familiar phrase. Many times we regret things we've done and wish we could start over, but how can we erase things that have already happened? How often do we actually start over? Valjean has made terrible mistakes, but when he is presented with the opportunity to start over, he acts decisively. He not only changes his appearance, name and location but also his values, morals and attitude. He keeps his past to himself and completely alters his outlook on life. The writers of the show emphasize his development by making connections to his past yet giving space for him to act differently according to his new persona. In the opening scene, a group of men are working hard on a slave ship.
