VETRUNNER Email: [email protected] ISSN 1449-8006 Vol. 26 Issue 1 — June, 2005 EARLY DAYS OF THE TUESDAY GROUP What started as a “Thursday Group” is now known as the “Tuesday Group”. This group of runners and walkers is second only to the Monthly Running/ Walking Handicaps on the numbers of veterans that meet in a regular basis. Taking in the fact that this group meets weekly and not monthly the numbers would be nudging the 200 mark. Here KEITH PERROUX writes about how it all started back in 1986.

The Tuesday Group started running from what was known as “Deek Drive” on Tuesday, October 21, 1986. The run that day was the “Gilbert 5” the old CCC’s five mile course that was used for the women’s race when the men ran the “McInnis 10”. Sue Gilbert was the originator of the women’s Jogalong handicaps. Prior to this a small group of women had been running on Thursdays. I was invited to join this group which, on the first day I ran, consisted of Rosemary Parker, Robyn Stanhope and Denise Templeton. The day was Thursday, August 7, which was six days after I retired from working at CSIRO. Mary Ann Busteed and Gwen Vines also ran with this group. We changed to Tuesdays when the track season started. It was suggested that it would be a good idea to run on Tuesdays with Jillian Pratten. “The Tuesday Group” was a name I suggested. It appealed to me because Molly my wife painted with a group called The originals from October 1987. This bevy of young “The Wednesday Group”. As I did my marathon “veterans” are, from the left, Marg Mackey, Jillian Pratten, Lynn training in the Stromlo — Greenhills area and ran on Williams, Keith Perroux, Jonne Yabsley, Linda Jamieson, Mary (Continued on Page 4) Ann Busteed and her mother Aileen, Rosemary Parker.

We were nearly all marathon runners and often ran for over an hour. We all stayed together as a group, it wasn’t a race. Noel Hart was the second male to join the group and surprise - the third was John Hart. A total of 26 people ran with the group on at least one occasion by the end of 1987. Some outstand sports women ran with the group through the years. Jillian Pratten, Shane Barrett, Linda Lenton, Susan Cook (World and Australian Champion walker) and Adair Ferguson (World and Commonwealth Gold Medalist in lightweight sculls). In February 1992 we had a visit for morning “coffee” from Arturo Barrios the then World 10,000m track record holder, and the first to run the half marathon in less than one hour. He had been training in the forest from “Deek Drive” It is sad for me and I am sure for all who ran with the group in the early days to see the devastation of the forest where we spent those happy days running together. I am indebted to Mary Ann Busteed for the 1987 picture and to Doug Fry for the information on Arturo Barrios.

Graeme Small (M60) won the bronze medal from a group 18 start in a net time of 52.36 and a per km rate of 5.16 minutes. Graeme has been running for 44 years, so he runs because it’s a part of his life. He trains five days a week for a total distance of about 50km. He also attends Geoff Moore’s training group once a week (evening) and then runs four other sessions in the mornings. Consistency of training assists Graeme’s overall performance. It’s interesting to note that none of the medal winners finished in the top three places. For some reason or another, the first three were ineligible so Tony won the gold medal coming in fourth, Norma was seventh and Graeme was ninth. Only one runner had a per km rate of less than four minutes – it was Greg Dutton-Regester (M40) with 3.50 minutes (he ran off group 40 and finished 13th). They are a fast lot these Thomas series runners with 29 participants with a per km rate of less than five minutes - that’s more than a third of the runners. Three of the 29 were women. the four events to find the King and Queen of the Mountains. This is one of the easier races to get to, the start area lies between Ainslie and Hackett at the top of Phillip Avenue. However, for those running the Thomas Series there is nothing easy about this course, well maybe the last 500m or so which is all down hill, but quite a lot of runners would be feeling the pinch before they even got to that last down hill section. For the Frylink and Waddell races the start area is almost at the entrance to the lower track that winds its way along the back of Ainslie. The distance is 4.5km and it is an out and back course, it undulates upwards on the way out and one would expect it to undulate downwards on the way back. However, our new handicapper waits till everyone is almost at the halfway point when he sneaks in a few more hills just for the fun of it. For the Thomas Series runners this course is rumoured to be the hardest of all the venues. Like the shorter race it also undulates up for the first five to six kilometres which also includes a couple of very short but steep climbs. After that there is a reasonably flat section for a kilometre or so before the very steep climb up over the pass between Mt Ainslie and Mt Majura. If anyone has any energy left they will be able to hoot it down to the finish line of this 9.3km run. Best of luck. NEW RECREATION AREA FOR STROMLO The ACT Government has provided finance in its recent budget to establish a new sports recreation area at Stromlo. This is to be sited in the area bounded by the Cotter Road, the Uriarra Road and the Mount Stromlo Road with access from the Uriarra Road not far from the Coppins Crossing road intersection. Plans are already well under way and it is expected that earthworks will begin in the next few months. The area is to feature an international standard cross country running course and a criterium circuit for cycling. A building with change rooms, toilets and administrative space with a viewing platform above is to be constructed overlooking these facilities. Trails for mountain bike riding will be established and the existing trails in the area which have been used for running and horse riding will be maintained. Extensive tree planting will take place around the cross country course and along the existing trails. As far as our club is concerned the Stromlo Sports Recreation Area should provide not only a good cross country course but also a centre which can be used as a base for Monthly Run/Walk handicaps. It is also possible that other athletics facilities could be developed within the area. It will be important that the Canberra running community is involved in the ongoing planning of this new development. The star veteran performers were M50 Trevor Tidbinbilla before heading into Tuggeranong where he Jacobs, surely one of the best in the world for his age, and went to the wrong place for the start. He then rode around W50s Carol Baird and Kay Pendlebury. A large part of why for quite some time, seeking directions twice, before he Trevor and Kay are so good is that they do lots of cycling, eventually turned up with barely minutes to start time. In which strengthens the thigh muscles and makes uphill fact he was putting his running shoes on while the pre- running easy, as well as safely adding aerobic volume to race briefing was conducted. their total training regime. Nevertheless the extended warm up paid dividends as ACT VET NAMED VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Ken Eynon named Volunteer of the Year in the Sport and Recreation Category of the ACT Volunteer of the Year Awards on Thursday, May 12, 2005. At the ACT Athletics 50th Anniversary Dinner on Saturday night (April 30), Ken Eynon was honoured yet again for his work on behalf of athletes in the ACT, this time for being a long term official at the track (nearly 15 years). Woden Harriers Athletic Club at their AGM last week, honoured Dave Hobson, by awarding him Life Membership. Bob took out the M55 championship in 38m52s over the 7km out and back course. Charlie Modrak was second in Australian Masters Awards 42.49, while two other M55s Hugh Moore and Terry Dixon sought increased value for money by instead running the tough 13km up and over the Rob Roy summit. Jim Sawkins ran an impressive 41.32 to win M65 from Doug Fry. Gutsiest run of the day was by M70 Bob Chapman who tripped on an uphill section after only 800m, taking skin off his nose, chin, hands and knees. He continued on, with a blood-covered face, and ran strongly to finish in 48:58, before having to spend quite some time using the first aid kit to clean up his wounds. This is the first time this has happened to Bob who has been a regular participant in mountain runs in recent years, comfortably winning his age group in championships and other events. Mt Majura is the venue for the ACT Championships for M40 to M50 and W35 to W50 on 28 May and for the Australian championships for M40 to M70 and W35 to W70 on 18 June. Many ACT vets will be medal contenders at the national championships. M50 will be particularly interesting with Trevor Jacobs and Steve Bradford up against Victorian aces Mark Phillips and Bob Flower, while Carol Baird and Kay Pendlebury should have a good duel in W50 in the absence of world champion Louise Fairfax of Tasmania who has been out of action with glandular fever. The success of Fairfax at the World Veterans Mountain Running Championship highlights two opportunities this year for veterans on the world stage. This year the annual World Veterans Championships are being conducted on 10 September in England on fantastically beautiful country in the Lakes District and the World Open Championships on 25 September in Wellington New Zealand with a public race with veteran awards. In addition to this there is a World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship over 42 kms in July in France where Trevor Jacobs would be a strong M50 medal contender if he could manage to get Two ACT Vets win AMA awards. Carol Baird, left, won the there. See the World Mountain Running Association web distance runner of the year award for 2004. Don Fraser won site http://www.wmra.info/ JOHN HARDING the multi-event category for 2004. Story on Page 8. 24th ACT VETS’ HALF MARATHON Sunday, August 28, 2005 Unfortunately Bryan Thomas will not be available to be Race Director this year. Bryan, organiser of all ACT Veterans’ Half Marathons to date (1982 to 2004), will be in San Sebastian competing in the WMA Championships when this year’s race will be conducted. Roy Jones has kindly volunteered to be Race Director this year. Bryan and Roy will work together in the early stages but Roy will take on more responsibility as the event draws nearer. He will be ably assisted by experienced team leaders; Jamie and Theresa Macgregor (pre- entries and results), Jenny Galvin (race day registration and finish recording) and Stuart Reid (start and finish chute). If you are interested in learning how the half marathon or an event of this scale is organised please contact Bryan at 61613635 or email [email protected] A show of interest would not mean you would have to be an event organiser but it would help spread knowledge of event management.
