Letter from Revd Canon Sue Oliver

August is school holiday time, seaside time in the days before everyone went abroad if they could. It’s time off, a rest if we are fortunate, an adventure if we are young, and sunny days if we all are lucky.

We all need time off don’t we? Time when the pace of life slows a little, or picks up if that is what it needs to do. Time to spend with family and friends. Time to have fun, play games, go for a walk, look out to sea and smell flowers Time to read a magazine or book, listen to music……. Or whatever it is you really want to do? I once was part of a group exercise when

the large group of over 100 had to get into smaller groups. To do this you had to go to an allocated part of the room if your preferred holiday was in a tent or mountain refuge, a caravan, a rented cottage, a bed and breakfast, a smart hotel or a ship/cruise….. The idea was that you would be able to work best if you were with people who liked the same kinds of holidays. Do you think that was a good idea? It certainly broke the ice though! Holidays should help us to think a little and give thanks, to count our blessings and make plans/ hazy ideas for the future. Saying thank you to God is one of the most important spiritual exercises. But it is one that is much less effort than going to the gym. Just look around at the beauty of flowers and birds, faces and natural things and say thank you God. Thank you for life and health, thank you for all that remains good even if life is tough, painful, hard. It’s as good a habit to get into as …. going to the gym exercising eating well All of which we can give thanks for this summertime

Prayers and Blessings Sue

Letter from the Archdeacon of Worcester

View from the train I am writing this travelling on a train back from the Kirchentag church convention in Germany. The Kirchentag meets every other year in a different city in Germany and has done so since 1949. It is an amazing Christian event, drawing in 100,000 people from all over Germany, Europe and around the world. Every day there are Bible studies, lectures and discussions, surrounded by a whole host of organised and impromptu concerts and street theatre. There is a carnival atmosphere with much laughter and fun as people both young and old meet up, finding old friends and making new. There is a serious side. The Kirchentag started as a lay movement, coming to terms with what happened during the Second World War. Since then it has always engaged with the issues affecting society and is all about how to live as Christians. The top politicians attend and you might even find a member of the government leading a Bible study. I was involved in two particular acts of worship. The first was the Meissen Eucharist, celebrating the partnership between the and the German Protestant Church, which is expressed in the links we have with Magdeburg. The second was a service around the theme of Brexit, which concerns our German brothers and sisters as much as it does us. I preached a sermon in dialogue with a French pastor, in which we affirmed the bonds of affection between us, our unity in Christ trumping political differences. So my train journey continues. We’ve just crossed the border from Germany into Belgium. There is no sign, but you see the difference in the look of the buildings and the different road signs. It occurs to me that the Belgians are not any the less Belgian because of the European Union, nor the Germans less German. They do not lose their national identity. And as I reflect on the experience of the Kirchentag, it is clear to me that our identity as Christians comes before everything else as well. The Kirchentag reminded me once again that this identity is expressed above all in how we live out the love of God in the world, wherever we happen to be. We take the world seriously because God does - indeed He made it! In these troubled times, perhaps we need to be even more aware of that, courageous enough to speak truth to power, and hopeful enough to build up the bonds of affection between people and nations. And now we’ve reached Brussels. It still amazes me that I’ll get on another train here that will take me right through to London. Thankfully it is not only bonds of affection that will keep us connected; we always will be part of Europe.

Archdeacon Robert Jones

BELLS

By the time you read this we will have had our summer barbecue on 16th July – hope it was dry! There will also have been the Northern Branch Skittles evening for the District ringers at Belbroughton – usually popular and packed. A note has come round from the Central Council of Church Bellringers to say VE day next year – 2020 – is the 75th anniversary of the finish of WWII and May Bank Holiday will be put back a week with bells requested to be rung. If anyone is interested in learning in order to take part, now is the time to make yourselves known. We’re a friendly bunch and if you let us know you’re coming, will even arrange a meet and greet although the door is always open on Tuesdays – barbecues aside. Clent ringers would also be more than happy to see you. It is well worth celebrating even if the human race is still trying to wipe itself out in various places around the world. On a happier note we are chirpy band and recently have broken cover as 2 of our learners have been visiting other towers for more practice – Belbroughton can only take so much of a good thing.

IN MEMORIUM (Belbroughton) Courtesy of: Doug Smith

We remember Leonard Tandy and Henry Collins. Private Leonard Tandy - 17918, 10th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment He was born in Belbroughton and in 1911 he was 16 years of age and was living in Church Terrace with his father, mother and four brothers and sister. He was a labourer for a bricklayer. He enlisted in the 10th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment in Worcester. The 10th (Service) Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment was raised at Worcester in September 1914 as part of Kitchener's Second New Army and joined 57th Brigade in 19th (Western) Division. They proceeded to France on the 18th of July 1915, the division concentrating near St Omer. Their first action was at Pietre, in a diversionary action supporting the Battle of Loos. In 1916 they were in action during the Battle of the Somme, capturing La Boisselle and being involved in the attacks on High Wood, The Battles of Pozieres Ridge, the Ancre Heights and the Ancre. 19th Division, which had been held in reserve, was put into the attack on 2nd July. By 15.30 some of the men had bombed their way into the village; this led to some severe house-to-house fighting with the German defenders, and the village was eventually taken the following day. Counter- attacks from the Germans had to be fought off and only by 5th July could the village be said to be safely in Allied hands. He died aged 21 on Monday, July 3rd 1916 and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial. Rifleman George Henry Collins - R/7818, 9th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps He was the son of George Henry and Agnes Collins. In 1911 George was aged 26 and was living in Broomhill, Belbroughton with his wife Minnie, father, William Portman, and mother in law and family. His brother in law was Nelson Portman. He was a carter for a grocer. He enlisted in the Kings Royal Rifle Regiment in November 1914 and was posted out to France. He was wounded in May 1915 and again in May 1916. In 1915 his was the first regiment to face flamethrowers. His Battalion saw action on the Somme from July 1916 including the very heavy fighting around Delville Wood. The most important attack came on 27th July. After a heavy artillery bombardment the 15th Brigade of the 5th Division and the 99th Brigade of the 2nd Division advanced into the shattered remains of the wood, and captured most of it. Only the northern and eastern edges remained. How sad that just the name marks their existence. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

BELBROUGHTON CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Following on from last month, we are please to be able to publish, below, the actual story that Esme Harrison-Jones (of Belbroughton Primary School) submitted in the BBC competition recently and won Gold:

Why Did The Chicken – by Esme Harrison-Jones Chickens are daft creatures with no brain at all. They have absolutely NO sense whatsoever and this story confirms it. There was once a group of chickens, who fitted the above description well, that arrived at a busy road. No they didn't fly across or anything like that, they simply tried to cross it. As is the norm with chickens, the smallest chicken went first. This brave (or stupid) chicken attempted to cross the road by playing chicken with the cars. Turns out playing chicken when you are a chicken is a bad mistake. One nil to the busy road. Next, the oldest chicken announced that they would make a chicken catapult. They all agreed that it was an amazing idea and quickly constructed one. After counting down from two they fired the second youngest chicken into the air. Majestically, the valiant young chicken flew through the air like a feathery firework, carrying his fellow chicken's hopes and dreams...for around 20cm before SPLAT! His adventure was ended by the number 29 double decker bus. They came up with many more cunning schemes: a chicken chain, a disguise and a tunnel. The first resulted in SPLAT! The second resulted in quite a few SPLATS as well as a horrified driver, who had thought he had killed someone dressed in a long coat and trousers. The final idea, didn't result in SPLAT! But instead quite a few broken beaks as concreate is difficult to dig through when you're a chicken. Now there were only 3 or 4 chickens left. They sat down on the dusty road and thought. Then the leader had an idea. The plan was simple. Climb up the nearby metal tower with long ropes that stretched into the distance. Peak though the ropes and swing across the road. Unfortunately, the three chickens that attempted the plan ended up peaking at a 10000 volt electric cable. For several days afterwards the area smelt like chicken dinner. The only chicken left now was oldest one, who decided to just go for it. Breathing deeply, he closed his eyes and ran into the busy road. Flapping and keeping his eyes shut he ran like his life depended on it (which it did). Finally, he tripped over a block and fell face down. Slowly, opening his eyes, he was amazed to see he was on the opposite side. He had done it! He had finally crossed the road! After jumping around like a headless chicken (of which he was thankful he wasn't) he gathered his thoughts and strolled toward the one place that he and his fellow chickens had been aiming for all along. They called it chicken heaven. A place so great that pictures of chickens covered the walls, tables and signs. A true paradise and now it was just yards away. All chickens knew its name - Kome Forth Chickens or as the humans called it KFC. Sauntering in through the front doors, the chicken smiled his biggest - and last - smile.

Looking Back June Meeting

On Friday 28th of June BHS members and friends enjoyed a lovely evening garden visit to NGS garden 19 Waterdale, Wolverhampton. Never have we seen so much in a city garden, a wonderfully enchanted secluded location. It was hard to believe we were less than a couple of miles from a busy city centre ring road. We enjoyed listening to the history of the garden before being let loose to enjoy a Japanese section, a lovely decorated tea-room, beneath which lay a superbly hand decorated candle lit shell grotto, and a Gothic folly. After we had wondered round the garden we then enjoyed home-made cakes on the patio, a truly wonderful evening, it was not hard to see why this garden had featured on BBC Gardeners world.

We also had a bonus we were not expecting when we were invited to view number 12 Waterdale, another NGS garden. This was quite different, but equally enjoyable, as we walked round a large circular flower bed teeming with flowers. The highlight being the lovely terrace balcony where we could imagine the owners looking down on their beautiful flower garden creation. A most enjoyable evening.

BELBROUGHTON HISTORY SOCIETY – FROM THE ARCHIVES

Beware the Churchwardens Since medieval times, churchwardens have played an important part in the running of the parish. Usually two parishioners were elected at the annual Easter Vestry meeting for the next year. They shared responsibility for parish affairs with the parish priest, the latter caring for the spiritual needs of the community, while churchwardens looked after the maintenance of the church buildings, church finances, tithe collection and cultivation of glebe land. They were responsible for the good behaviour of parishioners, ensuring regular attendance at church services, punishment for blasphemy, breaking church law, and other misdemeanours. With so much responsibility, it is likely that the wardens were appointed from the leading members of the community. Presentments The earliest known record of churchwardens’ activities dates back to the 1300s, but it is in the C15th that material becomes more readily available. Churchwardens submitted accounts and ‘presentments’ concerning affairs of the parish to the church authorities, and such surviving documents give an interesting insight into life in earlier times. The C16th and C17th were turbulent times in the history of the country. The differing and conflicting religious beliefs of the successive monarchs, including the period dominated by Oliver Cromwell and the brief Republic, supported alternately Catholicism and Protestantism, and brought about widespread disruption and dissent across the country. It saw the growth of ‘breakaway’ sects, rebelling against the established church: Methodists, Baptists, Quakers, Seekers, Ranters and Separatists to name but a few. The Wardens’ Reports Belbroughton’s affairs were duly reported by the churchwardens to the authorities. In the 1600s, following all the disruption, we could expect to find our parish church in need of repair, but this does not appear to have been the case. Repeatedly they reported: ‘We present that our church and churchyard are in good and sufficient repair’. However, other aspects are not so uneventful! (You will need to wait until next month to find out more about what was going on!)

Speed Enforcement Update Several residents have reported that they have not seen the Mobile Enforcement Officer in the village since late February. The Community Association has contacted the Safer Road Partnership and the Operations Manager has informed us that they are experiencing some motorbike related staffing problem. The Operations Manager has said that ‘It will be resolved over the next couple of months in the interim we have asked the local officers to pay some attention to the area.’ So that we know how often the Local Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team are carrying out speed enforcement in the village, could residents email the Association when they see speed enforcement taking place – date, time, place of enforcement (and if possible) how long the officers were carrying out enforcement? The Parish News August 2019 FAIRFIELD WI

Fairfield WI meets every second Wednesday in the month at Fairfield Village Hall at 7.30 pm. Do come along you will be very welcome. This month our meeting took a different format. We had booked a highly recommended speaker Ellie Somme to talk about her father and the courageous work of the Norwegian resistance. We thought in this year when we are remembering so many people and events from the second World War it would be good to Open the meeting to friends from other WI and our community who might enjoy her story.

Carol welcomed a good number of visitors and keeping W.I. business to a minimum introduced Ellie who had travelled from Herefordshire to be with us.

The trials and tribulations the Norwegians suffered at the hands of the Germans are not the first in peoples memories. Ray Mears said in the forward to Ellies book " lovers of nature and the free outdoors were never going to be willingly oppressed. Ellie spoke with great fondness of her father Sven and mother Primrose and her childhood growing up with brother Bertram and sister Yuli in a beautiful old house in a village on the outskirts of Molde. Her father a Professor of Marine Biology was the government inspector of fisheries for the whole of Norway. She illustrated her talk with slides and laughingly pointed out that Norwegian schools never closed because of snow.

In 1960 her father took the family to America while he was lecturing at universities in the north, when they returned to Norway some years later he was ill and after a year lost his battle with cancer. Ellie was nine. In the spring of 1962 her mother decided to return to England and begin a new life in Dartmouth.

Many years later after reading her father, s account of the many ingenious ways he and his resistance friends secretly got information about German movements back to England, minute script hidden in postage stamps, production of a secret newspaper, microfilm hidden in a matchstick ( incredible ) Ellie was moved to retrace her father flight, after escaping from German imprisonment and what would have been certain death. After months of planning and preparation on the 60th. anniversary in 2004 her incredible journey began. The most emotional moment of the trip, when a pair of shoes exchanged for mountain boots were returned to her by a family who sheltered him along the way. " Another mans shoes " the title of her book. She brought his shoes with her.

Shirley thanked Ellie for her excellent talk, and while refreshments were enjoyed Ellie did a brisk book signing of what will be an absorbing read, to hear all the details of her amazing trip it is a must !!

Our August meeting is replaced by our ever popular " Produce Show " come and have a go and enjoy the fun.

A passenger jet was suffering through a severe thunderstorm. As the passengers were being bounced around by the turbulence, a young woman turned to a minister sitting next to her and with a nervous laugh asks, "Reverend, you're a man of God, can't you do something about this storm?"

To which he replies, "Sorry ma'am, I'm in sales, not management."

Kidderminster & District

Our conference in June about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) was very informative. Two hundred million women and girls worldwide have been affected by FGM including 137,000 in the UK. Our keynote speaker, Gillian Squires, said that prevention is the key, as punishment for acts already committed can be counterproductive as girls generally do not wish to have their parents prosecuted and communities are silent as they feel FGM is part of their culture. Rose Morimbo Simbo shared her personal experience. Rose is committed to speaking out about what happened to her so that other girls do not have to suffer the same fate. Through her charity, the Kori Development Project in Sierra Leone she strives to make a difference to their lives. By winning their trust she hopes to change their culture away from cutting girls. Alison Byrne, a specialist midwife saw her first case of FGM 17 years ago when a young woman who was a victim of the most severe form of FGM was about to give birth. She now runs one of a small number of specialist clinics in the UK and sees patients from all over the country.

Janice Bell, President of Soroptimist and District said, ‘This is an uncomfortable topic and for many may seem to be irrelevant to us here in Worcestershire but hearing the women’s stories and trying to understand why this practice is still so prevalent may help to bring pressure to eradicate it.’

THANK YOU

Thank you from John Partington, former Schoolmaster of Clent

Many people in Clent will know John Partington, schoolmaster of Clent from 1955 to 1985 and a longstanding member of the church and the local community. He recently decided to move south to Brighton to be closer to his family. Through the magazine we would like to thank everyone who sent him cards and goodwill messages - far too many for him to reply to individually. It means a lot to him to know how much he is still in the thoughts of his friends in the village. (Andrew Partington - son)

CLENT MOTHERS’ UNION

Our annual outing was on a beautiful summer day. We travelled to Bodenham Arboretum for afternoon tea which was served in the annexe to the restaurant, meaning we had a private room overlooking the lake and trees. It couldn’t have been better and we do thank Anne for organizing everything. It was also very good to see Jan who felt well enough to join us and we thank Richard for bringing her. It was a lovely afternoon. We do not have an August meeting and our next branch meeting will be on Thursday 5th September at 2pm in Clent Parish Hall. Our speaker will be Gaye Pye who is going to tell us about her life in South Korea. We have enjoyed Gaye speaking to us once before and we are sure this will be an interesting talk. It will be good to meet with members following the summer break.

Its leaves drooped in despair at my hopelessness. I could almost hear it saying. “How do you expect me to win a prize at Clent Flower Show if this is how you treat me?” I am happy to report that the same little geranium has now been re potted, given space to stretch its roots, watered and fed and it looks sort of smiley, knowing that it might now be in with a chance to walk off FUNNIES with a prize on Saturday 7th September. Don’t miss the day. Whether you are up for A guy hears a knock at the door. a challenge or just for a wander Clent Flower Show is a date for the diary. He opens it up to find a snail. He picks up the snail and throws it across the street. th On September 12 we begin our regular meetings again with Sheila Oxspring as Five years go by. our speaker sharing her knowledge of Homeopathy. One day he hears a knock on the door and opens it to see a snail.

The snail says, "What the heck was that about?!"

The Parish News August 2019 CLENT PARISH COUNCIL

Among items discussed at our June meeting were

VE Day anniversary May 2020

There will be a Nationwide three-day weekend of commemorative events to mark the 75 Anniversary of VE Day. The early May bank holiday has been moved back 4 days to Friday 8 May. It has been agreed that the Parish Council will support the arranging of an event for Clent and a working party is being established. Updates will be provided at our monthly meetings and also on our website. Events will be published in this magazine and on our notice boards.

Litter Pick

Our popular litter pick days which have been held twice yearly are now being increased to three a year starting in September. Date time and meeting point will be announced in good time.

Grass Cutting

We employ contractors to keep the grass cut, hedges trimmed and roadside verges and footpaths clear in areas under our control. In early summer when the growing season is very active this can mean there are times when there are delays in getting around to all of the jobs. This has been particularly difficult during our very wet June. If at any time you become aware of an area that has been missed or is becoming overgrown please let our Clerk know - contact details below.

Meetings

We meet on the third Monday each month at 7pm in Clent Parish Hall. There will not be a meeting in August so our next meeting will be on Monday 16 September and parishioners are very welcome to join us.

Contact the Parish Clerk e-mail : [email protected] tel 07929 213117 or you may write to me at Fourstones, Bromsgrove Road,Clent DY9 9RL

The Parish News August 2019 CLENT GARDENING CLUB

The month of June saw members welcome Robin Pearce from Hallow near Worcester to give his talk entitled “Crazy Daisies (Exploring the world of “daisy-like flowers). Robin began his talk with an introduction to the species which literally contained thousands of varieties including, members were surprised to learn, such plants as lettuce and artichokes from the vegetable garden! Robin also surprised members with the revelation that daisies are amongst the oldest plants on the planet with fossilised daisies having been found dating back around 50 million years. Robin spoke eloquently on his subject supported by a fine array of colour photography much of which he had taken himself following which, after a short question and answer session, members enjoyed the usual tea/coffee and biscuits before the raffle was drawn and the Chairman announced the results of the monthly competitions. The Chairman reminded members that the next meeting would be on Friday 26 July comprising a talk by Ian Thwaites on “Cacti & Succulents”. The chairman also reminded members that tickets were still available for the day outing in Herefordshire on 18 July following which the meeting closed. All are welcome at our meetings which are held at Clent Village Hall on the 4th Friday each month and anyone interested in either joining or just visiting the Club can get further details by visiting our website on https://clentgardeningclub.wordpress.com or by contacting our Chairman Martin Grange 01562 883009/07917 184762.

AUGUST IN THE GARDEN August is usually one of the hottest months of the year - making watering essential. Try to use grey water wherever possible, especially as water butts may be running low if it has been a dry summer. August is traditionally holiday-time, so you might need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden while you are away. When you are at home, take the time to prune summer-flowering shrubs.

1. Prune Wisteria 2. Don’t delay summer pruning fruits trained as restricted forms 3. Deadhead flowering plants regularly 4. Watering! Particularly containers, and new plants, preferably with grey recycled water or stored rainwater 5. Collect seed from garden plants 6. Harvest sweetcorn and other vegetables as they become ready 7. Continue cutting out old fruited canes on raspberries 8. Lift and pot up rooted strawberry runners 9. Keep ponds and water features topped up 10. Feed the soil with green manures © RHS.org.uk

Returning to business we were privileged to have Rotarian David Valentine our Assistant District Governor for the annual club assembly who was equally impressed with the meal selections and our new venue. Preparations and the program for the coming Rotary Year were outlined by Vice Presedent Godfrey Partridge who stressed the intention that the year would be entertaining, sociable and most importantly fun, each and every Monday Evening. Social evenings with our partners were to be more frequent and the speaker lists already included well informed and varied contributions from Sports, Stage Performers, Television Presentors, Cullanary Experts, Treasure Trove, Exploration and Travel as well as Financial and Investment Advisory Centers.. In addition to the quiz and games evenings , we have made preparation for the objectives of Rotary to be explained more fully by setting aside a meeting each month for discussion and examination of the months Rotary topic. So if readers would like to have fun with purpose give consideration to joining our club who meet at 7.00pm for 7.30pm on Monday evenings at the Lyttleton Arms by visiting our website at https://hagleyrotary.wixsite.com/website. Or make a phone call to: Martin Freckelton on 01562 700 391 or Dave Santus on 01562 886 529 who will be delighted to tell you more about our Rotary Club in Hagley and its activities.

Local care company Home Instead is rated “Outstanding”

Local company Home Instead Senior Care (Stourbridge, Hagley and Halesowen) have shown following a recent inspection from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) that they are setting a new benchmark for high quality care. With a rating scale similar to schools, Home Instead have been rated overall “Outstanding” which has been given to only 3% of home care providers nationally. Established in 2012 with an office in Hagley, Home Instead say they offer a different sort of service which is tailored to each individual person rather than the usual focus on fast visits and high volumes. Whilst Home Instead can offer personal care and specialises in dementia care, many clients just want some help around the house and with the same CAREGivers visiting each week, they seem more like part of the family who can visit simply for good company, to reignite old hobbies or to get out and about in the local area. The inspection report explains “People received outstanding care. Without exception, people were extremely complimentary about the caring attitude of all the caregivers who supported them.” One person said, "The carers are all very good and I cannot fault any of them. All wonderful to be honest, so For more about Home Instead caring and kind." Another Senior Care, visit person said, “I can't speak www.homeinstead.co.uk/stourbridge highly enough about any of or phone 01562 885589 them. They will do anything for me and are so nice and caring in the way they do things.”
