From the Pastor:

On April 11, 2015, Francis announced “an extraordinary jubilee, a Holy Year of Mercy that is to have God’s mercy at its center” (Miserecordiae Vultus). He wants us to live this Holy Year in the light of Jesus’ words: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36). Thus, Merciful, like the Father, is the motto of this Holy Year. Our task is to contemplate, imitate and adopt God’s mercy as our lifestyle.

The Holy Year will begin December 8, 2015 on the Solemnity of the , which recalls God’s merciful actions from the very beginning of mankind’s history, to draw us all back into the right relationship with God and others that was lost because of sin. When faced with the gravity of sin, God responds with the fullness of mercy, which will always be greater than any sin, and no one can place limits on the love of God who is ever ready to forgive.

Jesus is the face of the Father’s mercy and reveals God as a Father who never gives up until he has forgiven the wrong and overcome rejection with compassion and mercy. Jesus affirms that mercy is not only God’s action, but as God’s children, we are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us. Pardoning offenses becomes the clearest expression of merciful love, and for us Christians, it is an imperative from which we cannot excuse ourselves. In mercy, we find proof of how God loves us. God gives his entire self, always, freely, asking nothing in return.

Pope Francis desires that this Jubilee Year “will be steeped in mercy, an extraordinary time of grace, so that we can go out to every man and woman, bringing the goodness and tenderness of God! May the balm of mercy reach everyone, both believers and those far away, as a sign that the kingdom of God is already present in our midst!”

I know that the people of St. Peter Chanel are a loving and supportive community – especially where those in need are involved. Our parish St. Vincent de Paul chapter annually provides assistance to the poor in our area through your contributions. Their initial report on support shows that:

Over 500 families totaling more than 1,300 people have been helped. Over 50 families every month receive food from the parish food pantry. The Christmas Giving Tree Program on its own helped nearly 1,000 people and 9 different charities. Finally, this ministry has distributed close to $200,000 in aid to the poor over the past fiscal year.

Thank you for your support of our parish chapter of St. Vincent de Paul and especially at this time of the year, for your support of the Giving Tree. 11330 Woodstock Road Roswell, GA 30075 Second Sunday of Advent Page 3 2015 - 2016 Parish Holiday Liturgical Calendar CHRISTMAS SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6 THE VIGIL OF CHRISTMAS Holy Land Gifts THURSDAY, DECEMBER 24 Saturday Vigil Mass: 4:30PM Masses: 4:00PM†*, 6:00PM*, 8:00PM, 9:30PM, Sunday Masses: 7:30AM, 9:00AM, 10:45AM, 12:15PM, 11:30PM 5:00PM Teen Mass (* Mass at BTHS, Parish Hall & Church) († Family-Centered Masses - Parish Hall & SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE Church) CONCEPTION TUESDAY, DECEMBER 8 (HOLY DAY OF THE SOLEMNITY OF CHRISTMAS OBLIGATION) FRIDAY, DECEMBER 25 Vigil Mass: 7:00PM 6:45AM, 8:30AM, 12 Noon, 5:00PM, 7:00PM 7:30AM, 9:00AM, 10:45AM, 12:15PM

TAX-WISE PLANNING BEFORE THE YEAR’S END Have you taken the opportunity to look at your taxes for this year? You might be surprised at how much of your hard-earned money will go to the state and federal government. Now is the time to consider making an end-of- year gift that will help offset your current tax liability. END OF YEAR GIFT OPTIONS There are a number of ways to make an end-of-year gift that provide you with valuable benefits and help further our work here at St. Peter Chanel. Here are a few options to consider: MAKE A DEDUCTIBLE GIFT OF PROPERTY AND AVOID TAX If you own appreciated stock or real estate that you wish to sell without paying capital gains tax, consider gifting property to us. We will sell your property tax-free and you receive a charitable tax deduction for your gift. Please check with us on ways to transfer your property gift to us. MAKE A DEDUCTIBLE GIFT AND RECEIVE LIFE INCOME If you are looking for ways to make a tax deductible gift this year and increase your income for retirement or in the future, we have several plans that could be the answer. Please contact Tom Blond at 678-832-1224. YEAR END REMINDERS Thank you in advance for your generous support of our annual Christmas collection which provides a significant portion of the funds used all year long to support our many ministries and programs. This is the single most important collection of the year for the operations of St. Peter Chanel.  Remember the December 31st deadline for charitable gift tax deductions. Contact Tom Blond at 678-832-1224 or [email protected] for information on how to transfer stock or other assets.  Checks postmarked in 2015, but delivered in 2016, can be claimed as a deduction in 2015.
