We were saddened to learn of the death of Walter Rowe Courtenay, Jr., on January 30 at age 80. Walter moved to Nashville in 1944 at the age of ten when his father was called to be Pastor at First Presbyterian Church. Walter graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1956 and earned his Ph.D. from Miami University in 1965. After short teaching stints at Duke and Boston University, he served on the faculty of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton from 1967-1999. He twice chaired the Department of Biological Sciences. He served in a variety of national and international capacities lending his expertise in marine sciences to university research efforts to propagate fish populations and provide food supplies for the world. After his retirement he moved to Gainesville, Florida, where he continued research and publication projects. Mrs. Courtenay, Dr. Courtenay, Walter Courtenay, Jr. & William J. Courtenay The American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists named Walter an Emeritus Fellow, and the American Fisheries Society gave him their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Walter’s wife Patricia predeceased him in 2007, and he is survived by his brother William J. Courtenay of Madison, Wisconsin; his stepmother Ann S. Courtenay of Advance, North Carolina; and son Walter Rowe Courtenay III of Cary, North Carolina; daughter Catherine C. Kantner (Barry) and granddaughter Caitlin of Gainesville, Florida. We are grateful to Walter’s brother, Bill, a retired history professor, for notifying the church of Walter’s death. The Courtenay family has been greatly loved by First Presbyterian Church and have blessed us in so many ways.
