Twelve years later when Serhii wanted to return to his native Crimea, he could not since he no longer had a passport and by that point, Crimea had been occupied. When Serhii met brother Sebastian Jankowski OMI, the Caritas-Spes Mobile Soup Kitchen Coordinator, he brought Serhii to a retreat and began to take care of him. The photo was taken during the St. Nicholas Event for the Homeless, an annual event dedicated to finding people who do not come to places where the Mission distributes food. We bring food, warm clothes, washbasins, and laundry detergent to the homeless living in Kyiv’s underground heating mains. Underground, in complete darkness, among the scattered rubbish, shining a lantern, we looked for people for whom this light became a light of hope.
