MISSION APPEAL

SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND!

Once a year during the summer months, the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops through the Missionary Cooperative Program of the Pontifical Mission Society gives us the opportunity to truly be a part of the Universal by inviting and encouraging parishes to support the Church beyond our country’s borders.

This weekend, St. Patrick welcomes Fr. Tom Carroll, Sch.P. from the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky and a member of the Piarist Fathers. The Piarist Fathers were founded by St. Joseph Calasanctius in Rome in 1617. In addition to the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, the Piarists take a fourth vow to educate youth. They operate between 195—200 schools in 32 countries around the world. One of those schools is located in the Appalachian region of eastern Kentucky.

The Piarist Fathers are asking for our support in helping not only in their educational work in Appalachia but also in the many outreach programs designed to help those living in poverty in the mountains. The three Piarists stationed in eastern Kentucky minister to the Catholics in four counties. Catholics number less than ½% of 1% of the population.

There will be a second collection at all Masses this weekend. Please make checks payable to St. Patrick Church and note that it is for the Mission Appeal. We thank you for your generosity!

How Did You Learn to Pray “Our Father….?” by Pamela Folse When I was a little girl, my mom and I would kneel by the side of the bed and that is where she taught me to say my prayers. As soon as I could formulate sounds and recognize my letters, I had a little hardcover prayer book with Mary on the cover and we would read our prayers together before going to bed. As I look back on that today, I am grateful that it was my mom who taught me to pray and she taught me in our own house, by her bed, in the quiet and stillness of her bedroom where there was no television or any noise except the ticking of the Big Ben wind-up alarm clock that would awaken my dad for work in the morning. It was my mom who taught me to pray, “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name…” We would then pray the “Hail Mary,” and the “Glory Be.” When I had those set to memory she taught me the “Act of Contrition,” because I needed to know that for my First Confession. In the scriptures this week, Jesus is praying alone when one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” And Jesus then gave the words to them that my mom gave to me, and I have shared with others and with you each time I come to Mass, before or after meetings, with grieving families at the deathbed of a loved one, at weddings, with little children when they are excited about receiving Jesus for the first time in the Holy Eucharist, with my own grandmother as we prayed the at her bedside as she took her last breath, and more times than I will ever be able to remember. Praying is really nothing special. There’s no need for parades or confetti falling from the sky. It’s not about a lot of jargon or using other people’s words from books and cards and those sorts of things. Just talk to God as though God was sitting right in front of you. Tell God anything you want. Just remember that praying isn’t just saying, it’s also listening to what God has to say to you, to hear how much he loves you. If you can’t think of anything else to say, just say “Our Father…” When you are at prayer this week, ask God to show you all the special times that you prayed His prayer and be grateful for those moments. In your heart please know that he heard every word to every prayer you’ve ever said.
