Item ID Date(s) Description Image Wisner- 89.544 March 12, This is a copy of a deed N/A Clowes Deed 1715 from Samuel Clowes to Hendrick Wisner for 50 acres of land near Florida, NY, for five shillings. This was one of the earliest deeds drawn up between white men in Orange County. Brass Candle 89.566 1730s This candlestick belonged Appendix Stick to Abigail Bradner Gale, Item A566 the granddaughter of the Rev. John Bradner, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Goshen from 1721 to 1732. Large dish 89.568 1755 This dish is from the Appendix family china of the Earl of Item A568 Stirling which was passed down to Henrietta Gedney Dikeman, who is the donor. Small Round 89.570 1755 This dish came from the Appendix Blue Dish family china of the Earl of Item A570 Stirling, which came down through direct line to Henrietta Gedney Dikeman, who was the donor. Sword 89.549 Pre- This sword is thought to N/A Revolutionar have belonged to y War Benjamin Tusten, father of Col. Benjamin Tusten, a doctor who died in the on July 22, 1779. Letter 89.545 August 16, This is the letter N/A appointing 1774 appointing Henry Wisner Henry to the First Continental Wisner to the Congress. He was also First appointed to the Second Continental but Congress came back to Goshen to make gun powder before the Declaration of Independence was signed. Four pieces 89.542 1775-1776 These four examples of Appendix of a, b, c, continental money were Item A542 Continental d, e used during the paper money War. Due to and one coin its lack of backing by hard currency, the phrase “Not worth a Continental” grew popular. Item a is five shillings and four pence. Item b is half a dollar, printed by Samuel Loudon. Item c is two shillings. Item d is half a dollar printed by John Holt. Item e is a coin. Revolutionar 89.550 1775-1789 This sword was carried by Appendix y War Sword Ensign Henry Smith. It has Item A550 a wooden handle, brass guard, and no scabbard. Later, it was used as a snuff box by Daniel I. Ebbets whose wife, Elizabeth Kip, carried money, sewn in the hem of her petticoat, through the British lines to Patriot soldiers. Map of 89.543 May 15, This is a copy of a famous N/A disputed land 1778 map, which shows the between disputed land between the Cheesecocks patents of the Wawayanda and and the Cheesecocks. The Wawayanda land was awarded to the Patentees Wawayanda in 1778. Alexander Hamilton was the lawyer for the Wawayanda patentees at a hearing in Chester. The institution has some documentation on microfilm for those who wish to research this subject. British Penny 89.597 1787 This British Penny was Appendix coined for India and dated Item A597 1787. Mrs. Elinora H. Robinson found the coin in her garden at the intersection of Route 207 and the Sarah Wells Trail in May of 1943. Skein of flax 89.575 After 1789 This is a skein of flax Appendix thread thread spun by Elinor Item A575 Carpenter (b. 1789) in the 1790s from flax grown on her father’s farm. Powder flask 89.577 1793 This powder flask was Appendix used by General James W. Item A577 Wilkin of Goshen in 1793. Surgical 89.573 Before July These scissors were used Appendix Scissors 22, 1799 by Dr. Benjamin Tuthill Item A573 prior to the Battle of Minisink. Old 89. Used in 1799 This early surveyor’s N/A Surveyor’s 504 compass was made by Compass Aaron Miller of Elizabethtown, New Jersey. It was used by Major Thomas Moffat in 1779. Surveyors’ 89.502 18th to 19th Surveyor’s chains were Appendix Chains Centuries used to measure distance Item A502 in the following manner: 1 link = 8 inches 100 links = 1 chain 10 chains = 1 furlong 8 furlongs = 1 mile Photograph 89.614 18th to 19th Photos marked “to Sister Appendix Century Prudence Coleman.” Item A614 Photographs of the sixth and seventh generations of the Coleman family. Leather 89.540 Late 18th General Reuben Hopkins Appendix Framed Coat Century (1748-1822) was a soldier Item A540 of Arms in the Revolutionary War, a lawyer, the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Orange County, NYS Senator (1794-1797), and a Brigadier General in the War of 1812. Flowered 89.569 18th Century This bowl belonged to Appendix Punch Bowl Col. Benjamin Tusten, a Item A569 surgeon at the Battle of Minisink, who was killed there on July 22, 1779. Col. Tusten was the great, great grandfather of Dr. Merriam, the donor.
