ROUND 13 COSTAIN PREMIERSHIP I : ~ ' g',, f1 ____ No. 13 22/23 June, 1985 ACTAFL PRESIDENT~S MESSAGE On behalf of ACTAFL and ACT football followers I extend a very warm welcome to our NSW visitors. We are pleased in the interests of football to see Riverina representatives in the NSW team. The NSW team is coached this year by Ron Thomas who is also State Director of Coaching. Today's game should be a close one. Both teams have lost to Queensland and Tasmania. The Canberra Costain Cats have played well in all representative games this year. We are well aware that NSW played well in their Fosters Shield games. The outcome of today's game will determine third place in the Shield. Whatever the outcome we congratulate players from both teams on t,heir selection to represent their state and I am sure spectators will enjoy an entertaining game. Today ACTAFL admits Alan Smith, Mark Briant. Geoff Harrold and Frank Leverett to the ACTAFL 200 Club. On behalf of football fans in the ACT I congratulate them on their achievement. Bill Mahoney President ACTAFL ACT /CANBERRA v NSW There have been 30 games between Canberra (or the ACT) against NSW since the first played in Sydney in 1925 and won by NSW. Canberra's first win came in 1939 in the first game played in Canberra between these two tea ms. Canberra won for the first time in Sydney in 1941. In 15 games up to 1961 Canberra lost 8. Since then Canberra has won 14 of the last 15 inclu~ing 3 Fosters Shield games with the one, loss being in 1980 in W~ga. Canberra players travelled by bus, rail and boat to play the 1938 game in Launceston as part of the Australian Carnival. The return game in 1939 at the SCG saw NSW kick a goal in the final seconds to win by 5 points. 1948 was the first year Canberra won both games in Sydney and Canberra. The 1958 game was played on the M.C.G. ACT trailed all day in the 1970 game but got up to win on the siren by 2 points. David Morgan kicked 12 goals in the 1971 win. NSW coach was Alan Jeans in 1979, Sam Kekovich in 1982, Barry Breen in 1984. Kevin Neale kicked 9 goals for the ACT in 1982 and Andy Birzneiks 6 in 1984.
