We are so very happy to be able to send you the two CDs (see form on last page). These most beautiful recordings come from the heart of Michael John Poirier, a rare and tender soul, Christmas whom I met at a Marian Eucharistic confer- ence some years ago. The name of Michael’s apostolate is Holy Family Apostolate. How very fitting. The restoration of the family is the reason for our existence as a new religious community, and, we believe, God’s number one design to build His Kingdom, which can only be a civilization of love.

Instructions for listening to CDs:  Gather family together – by the fireplace, around the table, or perhaps on a long car trip; ♥ Be sure to have a sufficient supply of marshmallows or other family treats on hand;  Unwrap CDs and play each one (Advent Reflections first!) from beginning to end in one sitting;  Spend a little time thanking God for His love for you and for the gift of one another. From Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI: “. . . family life is the first and irreplaceable school of social virtues, such as respect for persons, gratuitousness, trust, responsibility, solidarity, cooperation. Dear married couples, watch over your children . . . transmit to them, with serenity and trust, reasons for living, the strength of faith, pointing them towards high goals and supporting them in their fragility . . .Your vocation is not easy to live, especially today, but the vocation to love is a wonderful thing, it is the only force that can truly transform the world.” (Pastoral Visit to the Archdiocese of Milan and 7th World Meeting of Families, June 1-3, 2012) Mother Teresa: “I think the world today is upside-down. It is suffering so much because there is so little love in the home and in family life. We have no time for our children. We have no time for each other. There is no time to enjoy each other . . . Every- body today seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater development and greater riches, so that children have very little time for their parents. And parents have very little time for their children and for each other People who really and truly love each other are the happiest people in the world. We see that with our very poor people. They love their children and they love their families . . . Jesus did not say, “Love the whole world.” He said, “Love one another.” “The family that prays together, stays together.” Advent/Christmas 2012 Page 4

Update on the Priory of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Tulsa!

Where to start! It has been a thrilling year due solely to the boundless grace of our loving God whose mercies are new every morning – and to the generous hearts of the many fervent Catholics who love Him here in our new home of Tulsa and also throughout the country. I have rarely expe- rienced such an outpouring of generosity and help of every kind. Here is just a brief glimpse of what has taken place this past year: • Repairs to the Priory of Our Lady of Guadalupe are just about complete – all that remains are a few window re- placements and landscaping, including a fence for the backyard! • Our four new cells are also complete – blessed be God for your gifts in making that possible! Our Growing Silverstream Priory Benedictine Monks ✠ Under the Patronage of Our Lady of the Cenacle , Ireland • http://cenacleosb.org/ Our Blessed Lord, in His magnificent providence, arranged that Dom Mark Daniel Kirby, O.S.B., Founder and Prior of Our Lady of the Cena- cle Monastery, would precede us to Tulsa. Under the loving direction of Bishop Slattery, Father Kirby became the first Religious Assistant and Formator of the Daughters of Mary, Mother of Israel’s Hope, leading us thereby to embrace the Rule of Saint Benedict. In becoming , we inherited not only a second patron, but a greater treasure than we could have imagined. St. Benedict, as many know, is the Father of Western Monasticism who lived 1,000 years before St. Francis de Sales, our first patron. The two saints compliment one another wonderfully and root us in the teachings and tradition of the Church beyond what we could have hoped for. Indeed our Lord’s ways are past finding out, but marvelous in our eyes! Many of you know from our previous newsletter that Our Lord has since moved Father Kirby to Ireland where he has taken over – of all things – a monastery of the Visitation of Holy Mary (founded by Saint Francis de Sales!). Father Kirby is founding, in that once-very-Catholic land, a new community of monks, under the Rule of St. Benedict, who intercede for the sanctification of priests by "persevering with one mind in prayer with Mary, the Mother of Jesus" (Acts 1:14) and in adoration and reparation before the Eucharistic Face of Christ. You will find deep treasure for the soul on Father’s websites: http://cenacleosb.org/ and http://vultus.stblogs.org/. Servantes des Pauvres (Congregation of the Servants of the Poor) Angers, France • http://www.servantesdespauvres-osb.org/ Under the blessed urging of Father Kirby, we spent the month of May with this most wonderful community of Oblate Sisters in Angers, France, founded in 1870 by Dom Camille Leduc, and devoted primarily to the religious service of the poor in their homes. Their website is in French, but easily translated into English through Google or other sources. It is a beautiful site with a wonderful essay on their Founder and founding: http://www.servantesdespauvres-osb.org/. Under the most gracious invitation and care of their Prior General, Mother M. Noël Bénédicte, we were welcomed into their community and given every assistance imaginable during our month’s stay. The liturgical life of the community and choral office of is truly beautiful and one we very much wish to emulate. Their selflessness, service to the sick poor, and teaching of children was a joy to experience. In one home, when it was announced that this was Sister Kim’s first time to bathe an elderly woman in her home, everyone – including the woman whom Sister had bathed – applauded! What joy! Servants of the Poor remain true to their Founder’s vision, utterly faithful to the Magisterium, and most dear daughters of Saint Benedict and of Saint Frances of Rome, founder of the first religious community of vowed oblates. Since we spoke very little French, Mother General assigned to us Sister Ma- rie Dominique, originally from England but professed over 60 years – so that Sister had forgotten much of her English! We learned much from Sister Dominque about the religious life of a Benedictine, but mostly about the love and joy of one who has given herself in complete surrender to the God Who calls us to Himself. Forever, we will be sister communities in the work of the harvest. Oh the ways of God! Newsletter Eight Page 11

Benedictine Family! Our Lady of Clear Creek Abbey Benedictines of the Solesmes Congregation Hulbert, Oklahoma • http://clearcreekmonks.org/index.html Just a little over an hour from our Priory in Tulsa is the beautiful home of the Benedictines of Clear Creek whom we have had the great happiness of joining for the Holy Mass and Divine Office. Our Lady of Clear Creek Abbey was founded in 1999 by Notre- Dame de Fontgombault, a French Abbey which belongs to the Solesmes Congregation. The Patron Saint of Clear Creek Abbey is the Blessed Virgin Mary under the mystery of her Annunciation. Like the other of the Solesmes Congregation, Clear Creek Ab- bey belongs to those institutes of religious life entirely dedicated to contemplative prayer, without apostolic works. A particular emphasis is placed on the solemn celebration of the liturgy. We had the wonderful gift of visiting the Abbey of Solesmes in France during our time with Servantes des Pauvres in Angers. It was there that Dom Gueranger restored the Benedictine Order in France. Benedictine Oblate Sisters of Clear Creek Mary, Queen of Angels Convent • http://www.clearcreeksisters.org/ The Clear Creek Sisters are a contemplative community of women who live according to the rule of Saint Benedict as Oblates of Our Lady of Clear Creek Abbey (Benedictine Congregation of Solesmes). The community was established in 2005 under the authority of the Abbot of Notre-Dame de Fontgombault (France) and the guidance of the Superior of Fontgombault's foundation in America at Clear Creek, with the blessing of His Excel- lency, Edward J. Slattery, Bishop of Tulsa. We have had the great happiness of visiting with the Sisters at their Mary, Queen of An- gels Convent in Clear Creek and at our Our Lady of Guadalupe Priory in Tulsa. Such joy! Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles Priory of Our Lady of Ephesus Gower, Missouri • http://benedictinesofmary.org/ United with Our Lady at the foot of the Cross, the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles seek above all else, a life of union with God in prayer as guided by the Rule of St. Benedict. “Totally consecrated to the Queen of Apostles, we take Our Lady’s hidden life at Ephesus as an inspiration for our own. We seek to be what she was for the early Church: a loving and prayerful support to the Apostles, the first priests, and daily offer prayer and sacrifice for the sake of her spiritual sons.” I had the happiness of visiting the Sisters at their Priory. Some months later, when we became “Benedictines by surprise” I called their Mother Cecilia for help with the habit. The sisters sent the habit and veil patterns to us overnight (from which we would mold our own pattern)! How I praise God for such free and generous hearts – in imitation of Our Lady indeed! Advent/Christmas 2012 Page 12 The Highlight of our Past Year The Enthronement of an Image of the Sacred Heart & Blessing of our new Priory by Bishop Edward James Slattery On the Feast of the Sacred Heart, June 15, 2012, His Excellency Bishop Edward James Slattery granted us the honor and deep happiness of blessing the Priory of Our Lady of Guadalupe and of Enthroning an Image of the Sacred Heart. What a glorious time it was with full ceremony and pro- cession of the Image from the Oratory of our Priory to the Refectory where the Image would be enthroned. Monsi- gnor Patrick Brankin was of immeasurable help in putting together the proceedings and served as Master of Ceremo- nies. Making the event even more glorious was the presence of Fa- ther Tim Davi- son, our beloved pastor, and Mon- signor Patrick Gaalaas, togeth- er with seventy lay faithful. We sang, we ate, we worshipped, and we rejoiced in the God Who sent His Son. Because we are daughters, both of Saint Benedict and Saint Francis de Sales, we included this note in the booklet printed for this special occasion:

An Historical Note The two patrons of the Daughters of Mary, Mother of Israel’s Hope (in addition to Our Lady of Guadalupe), are Saint Benedict of Nursia and Saint Francis de Sales. It is significant that Our Lord appeared to the spiritual daughters of both saints to spread devotion to His Sacred Heart. In the thirteenth century on the Feast of St. John the Evangelist, Christ’s beloved disciple, the German Benedictine, Saint Gertrude the Great, had a vision of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In her vision, St. Gertrude saw herself reposing with St. John on the Heart of Jesus. Concerned, she asked the Evange- list why, in his gospel, he did not reveal the mysteries of the Heart of Jesus. He was, after all, the first one to experience them when he rested on Christ’s Heart at the Last Supper. To her question, St. John replied: ‘My mission was to write for the Church, still in its infancy . . . As for the language of these blessed beats of the Heart of Jesus, it is reserved for the last ages when the world, grown old and become cold in the love of God, will need to be warmed again by the revelation of these mysteries.’ 400 years later (December, 1673), St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (a nun of the Visitation order founded by Saint Fran- cis de Sales), experienced a very similar vision. A second time on the Feast of St. John the Evangelist, Our Lord ap- peared, asking for an increased response to His love, represented to all by the image of His Sacred Heart. In particular, Our Lord asked those who love Him to receive Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays, pray a Eucharistic Holy Hour on Thursdays and to aptly celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart. Christmas: the story of the God who became Man through the Woman He created Here is an excerpt from The Reed of God by Caryll Houselander that I have loved through the years . . . In giving life to Him (Mary) was giving Him death. All other children born must inevitably die; death belongs to fallen nature; the mother's gift to the child is life. But Christ is life; death did not belong to Him. In fact, unless Mary would give Him death, He could not die. Unless she would give Him the capacity for suffering, He could not suffer. He could only feel cold and hunger and thirst if she gave Him her vulnerability to cold and hunger and thirst. He could not know the indifference of friends or treachery or the bitterness of being be- trayed unless she gave Him a human mind and a human heart. That is what it meant to Mary to give human nature to God. He was invulnerable; He asked her for a body to be wounded. He was joy itself; He asked her to give Him tears. He was God; He asked her to make Him man. He asked for hands and feet to be nailed. He asked for flesh to be scourged. He asked for blood to be shed. He asked for a heart to be broken. The stable at Bethlehem was the first Calvary. The wooden manger was the first Cross. The swaddling bands were the first burial bands. The Passion had begun. Christ was man. This, too, was the first separation . . . She knew that this little son of hers was God's Son and that God had not given Him to her for herself alone but for the whole world . . .” † † † “God asked for Mary’s ordinary life—all of it—daily, even as He asks for ours. Our Lady said yes. She said yes for us all. But we each must echo her yes, which like Our Lady’s sur- render must be a complete and absolute trust, without condition, without reservation. We shall not be asked to do more than the Mother of God; we shall not be asked to become extraordinary or to offer great, heroic sacrifices. What we shall be asked to give is our flesh and blood, our daily life—our thoughts, our service to one another, our affections and loves, our words, our intellect, our waking, working, and sleeping, our ordinary human joys and sorrows—to God. To surrender all that we are, as we are, to the Spirit of Love in order that our lives may bear Christ into the world—that is what we shall be asked.” Fill out the form below electronically or by hand.
