About 1963 Commemorative Tree Planting
In 1963, Mr Lee Kuan Yew planted a Mempat Tree at Farrer Circus, signifying the start of Singapore’s greening campaign. To commemorate the event, NParks invited members of the public, NGOs, corporate bodies and government agencies to participate in the planting of 1,963 trees.
The commemorative tree plantings were carried out from 16 June to 30 November 2013. Over 5,000 people have been involved in planting trees around the island.
Funds raised will be channeled to NParks’ registered charity and IPC, Garden City Fund, and used to enhance the biodiversity and heritage values of the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
The tree planted by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong rounds off the series of tree-plantings to commemorate 50 Years of Greening Singapore.

Family: Dipterocarpaceae
Description: This species is native to Singapore and can be found in our nature reserves. It can grow to more than 5m in girth, achieving a height of more than 80m. It yields valuable damar hitam timber and is now critically endangered in its native habitats throughout the region.
