The ANZAC Connection: Match Review – Round 14 v’s Sydney . Collingwood 11.13.79 - Sydney 6.14.50

A 29 point victory was a great result for the ‘Pies against Sydney on Saturday night. Jack Anthony was a late change into the side for . Daisy Tomas set the standard early with some excellent play, including two of his now-trademark “hangers”, before Craig Bolton shut him down in the 2 nd half. used his huge engine and strength to stamp his impact on the match. Swanny managed to shuffle his way around the park to pick up another match-high 30 possessions. His strength in contested marks has improved immensely over the past 2 seasons!

Our ruckmen Bryan and Wood toiled well against the Jolly Spida combination at the stoppages, but contributed more around the ground with some telling marks in defence and attack. Malthouse will have a difficult decision when Fraser is fit and he has 3 ruckmen to choose from.

Collingwood’s defence was excellent. Wakelin continued his excellent form on power forward , giving him a good lesson once again. Great work Shagger!

Ryan O’Keefe has been one of the most damaging forwards in the competition this season, but after tonight’s game on he is trying to remember what a footy looks like.

In the battle of the “Irishmen”, Harry O’Brien pressured and ran off Mick O’Loughlin all night. Micky O had his chances to be the hero late in the game though, but missed several attempts at goal (of the other Irishmen, Marty Clarke was good for us especially early, and Kennelly was serviceable without being too damaging).

But the game was marred by poor disposal by both teams, especially at goal. The errors were attributed largely to the shifting surface of the Telstra Stadium, which had hosted the League State-of-Origin game on Wednesday night. At ¾ time, Sydney had kicked a paltry 2.9.20. Their score of 50 points was reported to be the lowest score ever at Telstra Stadium. Both teams missed very gettable goals.

A fifteen-minute lapse at the start of the 4 th quarter allowed the Swans to rally and triggered some nervous shifting-of-seats at the Brecknock Hotel. Scotty Burns pressure around stoppages was crucial in ceasing their momentum during this period. This lapse has become a disturbing trend in Collingwood’s games in 2008 and has cost us the premiership points on multiple occasions.

Leon Magic was not on display in this game and we wondered if he has not yet fully recovered from the ankle injury which kept him out of the game against the Doggies. If unfit, possible replacements for him could be Wellingham or rookie Brent McCaffer who has been blitzing in the reserves over the past month.

A win would this week against Adelaide will keep us well in the hunt for 4 th position on the ladder. Thankfully the game is at the ‘G and not Telstra Dome (where the Crows seem to enjoy success against us). The Swans play Hawthorn and if the Hawks and Collingwood win, it would leave us half a game behind Sydney. The next 4 weeks see Syd play Haw/Car/Ade/Dogs; Pies play Ade/Roos/Ess/Haw; Ade vs Pies/Port/Syd/Car....also keep an eye on Brisbane who play Ess/WC/Rich/Roos.

GO PIES!!!!

Our Next Game - Round 15 v Crows – Saturday July 12th – 1:30pm “LIVE” at the “BRECKNOCK”

This is our second last day game for the season!

This week’s game is a must win if we are going to seriously challenge for a spot in the Top 4, and a must win if Monday at work is going to be bearable.

This will be our second last day game for the season so it would be great to see the Magpie “Families” out in strong numbers letting the locals know that the Crows aren’t the only team on the planet.

Looking forward to seeing you all there. SAM Swooper – Issue # 14-08
