Sentences of Scripture

2 Confession & Absolution Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of the Almighty, to set forth God’s praise, to hear God’s holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves for this worship in heart and mind and body, let us now open ourselves with one minute of silence, making space and holding this quiet before the Living Christ, our Savior and ever-present Companion … Silence … meeting God in this stillness, let us pray with a faithful heart and confess our sins, that we may know God’s goodness, mercy, and forgiveness:

Almighty and most merciful God, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against your holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us: spare those who confess their faults, restore those who are penitent, all according to your promises declared in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name.

3 Canticle ‘Jubilate Deo’ Sung by the choir. Peter Hurford (1930-2019) Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. Know this: The Lord himself is God; he himself has made us, and we are his; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; give thanks to him and call upon his Name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his faithfulness endures from age to age. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Psalm 90:1-6 We will pray the psalm in Lord, you have been our refuge * unison. from one generation to another. Before the mountains were brought forth, or the land and the earth were born, * from age to age you are God. You turn us back to the dust and say, * “Go back, O child of earth.” For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past * and like a watch in the night. You sweep us away like a dream; * we fade away suddenly like the grass. In the morning it is green and flourishes; * in the evening it is dried up and withered. THE LESSONS Reading Deuteronomy 34:1-12 Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the Negeb, and the Plain—that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees—as far as Zoar. The Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants’; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.” Then Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the Lord’s command. He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor, but no one knows his burial place to this day. Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigor had not abated. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses was ended. Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the Lord had commanded Moses.

4 Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders that the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Canticle ‘Gloria in excelsis’ Sung by all. Robert Powell (b. 1932)

5 Reading Matthew 22:34-46 When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: “What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet”’? If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?” No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Hymn 635 ‘If thou but trust in God to guide thee’

6 The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy , the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THE PRAYERS The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayers of the People Holy and Gracious God, we pray for your Church throughout the world; that we all may be one. Grant that every member of your Church may truly and humbly serve you; that your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for the ministry of all the baptized; that we would be faithful servants of your Good News. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; that there would be justice and peace on the earth. In this election year, we pray for goodwill among all people; that your wisdom and Grace would prevail. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; that our works may find favor in your sight.

7 Intercessions Remembering especially … have compassion on all those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. We thank you, Lord, for all the blessings of this life, remembering especially … We hold before you all those expecting the birth of a child, remembering especially … We will exalt you, O God our King; And praise your Name for ever and ever. Remembering especially … give to the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for all your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.
