AT THE INTERFACE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN WORLD

Since its creation in 1983, ECUME has contributed to the development and perpetuation of cultural and educational exchanges between cities on the northern and southern shores of Mare Nostrum.

The thought and action of ECUME are to be found within the perspective of the rebirth of the great History of the Mediterranean : a contemporary re-foundation of an ancient heritage of Cultural Exchanges in the Mediterranean area.

The peoples of the Mediterranean have often felt that they belonged to an enduring entity thanks to geographic continuity, permeability of borders, interpenetration of languages and local markets, and by a largely common history albeit not without conflict.

We are deeply convinced that the Mediterranean, a unique region of the globe, must again offer an outline of a model, an exemplary confluence of cultures.

The main aim of ECUME is to contribute to the development of cultural expressions from the Mediterranean world by : > implementing lasting cooperation between artists and cultural, educational and scientific institutions from the Mediterranean cities and beyond, > establishing areas of creation, production and distribution, > exchanging experiences, ideas, know-how and techniques. AREAS OF INTERVENTION MUSIC In 30 years of existence, ECUME has become by its skills and its networks, VISUAL ARTS a reference in cultural cooperation in the Mediterranean. THEATRE

CULTURE : EVENTS

Cultural exchanges can only be fruitful if they are based on :

> the notion of mutual respect and reciprocal interest, > the essential preoccupation and continued effort to highlight related structures and references common to the different cultures present, in order to make their specificities understandable to all, > the transformation of limited relations into regular and constant exchanges, > the trust and the sharing of responsibilities of the partners in a move towards greater solidarity.

EDUCATION : THE NETWORKS

ECUME develops its cooperation program for higher education by the coordination of three networks : > the Art Schools network, > the Music Schools network, > the Drama Schools network.

These institutions common to all the countries are the only structures of artistic education and a necessary stage for future creators. The schools are not only places of practical training but also favor reflection on cultural models fulfilling a fundamental socio-economic function.

WORKSHOPS FOR EDUCATION AND RESEARCH

ECUME’s artistic and cultural initiatives cannot be conceived outside the sphere of the dynamics between the participants and the territory on which the event is held.

Within the framework of ECUME’s education and research workshops, the participants offer to give their artistic and intellectual contributions to the inhabitants of the territory who are people of all ages and social backgrounds.

Beyond the discovery of diverse practices or theories, these direct exchanges enable the inhabitants to be confronted with different ways of looking at the world and to question their own representation of it.
