(OTOW artwork by Mary Lou Wall and Doug Kates) ON TOP OF THE WORLD NEWS September 2014 / Page 19 You don’t have to be a pro to build in our workshop By Doug Erickson Jay Chang came into the Fixers shop and humbly asked if we could show him how to make a flower stand for his patio. Jay’s background is financial, without carpentry or other shop experience. He produced a set of plans that would require an advanced cabinet maker’s knowledge and skill to follow. At first, I was hesitant to answer his request. Because Jay had researched what he wanted to do, I agreed to lead him through his project one step at a time. The picture at right shows him mak- ing a mortise, a square hole into which a tenon is inserted. All of the fitting and attachments were done with that method and dados for the sides. There were no nails or screws used in this type of joinery. Because of Jay’s attention to detail, he was able to follow directions and re- peat the procedure on each of the following pieces. It was a pleasure to see him apply instructions and do them on his own. He always asked for directions for the next step, plus he never rushed the job. After finishing this project, Jay made a butcher’s block table without our guidance. He is now a valued shop member and friend. His finished work is pictured in the bottom right corner. Jay Chang with a garden table he built from scratch. Our workshop (Photos by Doug Erickson) is not an office - 100% pure enjoyment By Doug Erickson We subscribe to the principle of “Helping the people we meet, and leaving places better than they were.” We, as seniors, are in a time of life that grants us the opportunity to leave the rat race, stop watching the clock, stop measuring our efforts by finan- cial gain, and most importantly, stop seeking personal grandeur. If this agrees with your philoso- phy of life, you will feel at home with the Fixers, Fiddlers and Fumblers. You will enjoy the camaraderie with like-minded folk. Technical ex- pertise and knowledge are not the most important attributes in our club, atti- tudes and aims are the nuts and bolts of a good environment. So how does that apply to our 2015 plans? We will continue our charitable work of making toys for underprivileged children. We plan on making hundreds with the help of “Caring and Sharing.” You can learn how to, or hone your skills by working in the toy shop with us. As well, there are willing instructors in the woodshop to help you develop a project you may have in mind. If you are undecided about what to make, we have an extensive library of “How To” books and CDs. Choose the project and we will help you plan it, get materials, and guide you through the process. We can source materials for shop use and condo updates at below retail costs. Just working on your own is OK, as well. Don’t forget, we have loaner tools for legal condo renovations. If you want to help in the maintenance and betterment of the shops, we welcome your ideas. Our club is managed by an annual rotating leadership. Bella

Hello, my name is Ella-Bella or Bella for short. I am retired and moved into building 72 at On Top of the World with my staff - Pauline and Henry Santos. I like to take a walk everyday, sometimes twice a day around my building. I always take one of my staff with me and lead him/her with my leash to where ever I want to go. I am sort of the building welcoming committee. I enjoy greeting residents from other buildings. Often, I catch one of those little lizards, and we play for a while. I always let them go, but sometimes their tails are shorter. Don’t worry! I hear they grow back. Oh well, time for my afternoon nap.

Each month, OTOW News, Walgreens and Pet Supplies Plus are featuring a Pet of the Month in this newspaper. Any pets living at On Top of the World are eligible. To enter your pet, email one clear, color photo to [email protected] and tell us what makes your pet special. If you don’t have email capabilities, drop off your photo and information to the newsroom. You must include pet’s name, owner’s name, building and age. Only one pet per household can win each year. The winner will receive (1) 8x10, (2) 5x7 and (4) 4x6 photos from Walgreens on the corner of Belcher and Sunset Point roads. You will also receive a $10 gift card from Pet Supplies Plus on McMullen Booth Road in Clearwater. If you are the winner this month, bring the newspaper and your original color print to Walgreens to receive your prize, and stop by the newsroom to pick up your gift card. Each monthly winner becomes eligible for Pet of the Year honors in January. We are currently running low on entrees, so if you’ve never entered your pet in the contest, now is the time to do so! Good luck! Photo Search will return in October ON TOP OF THE WORLD NEWS September 2014 / Page 37
