Background to Special Resolution 2 and Resolution 1: The SLSA Board in conjunction with the States and Territories CEO’s have reviewed the fifteen (15) membership categories and simplified them to the five (5) broad categories listed below.  Junior membership (incorporating former categories of Junior Activities membership, Cadet [13-15] membership)  Active membership (incorporating former categories of Active, Reserve Active and Award memberships)  Community membership (non-patrolling and non-voting)  Associate membership (incorporating former categories of Associate membership, Probationary membership, General membership or Leave/Restricted membership)  Honorary and Service membership(s) including Life Membership (incorporating former categories of Long Service, Honorary and Past Active membership).

These changes have been made to Surfguard to accommodate the new structure. All fifteen (15) existing membership categories have become sub-categories and the five (5) new Primary categories have been created. Members have been placed in their Primary category and their sub-category. This will ensure that clubs can report on their existing membership categories and become familiar with the new Primary categories.

Special Resolution 2: That the membership categories as described in Surf Life Saving Australia – Circular SLSA Regulations Review and Update dated 13 July 2018 be adopted and that where the Narrabeen Beach Surf Lifesaving Club constitution and bylaws refer to membership categories these will be interpreted to refer to the SLSA subcategories.

Resolution 1: That the Board of Management establish a committee, selected from the membership, to review and propose amendments to the constitution and bylaws, as necessary to fully implement the change in membership categories being introduced by Surf Lifesaving Australia, for approval at a Special General Meeting.

Resolution 2: That in recognition of many years of outstanding service to the club including Junior Captain, 10 years of patrol service, plus SRC, Bronze and IRB trainer, Patrol Captain and assistance with Ocean Swim plus other club activities with the approval of the Board of Management, and in accordance with the club constitution, Will McInnes be awarded Outstanding Service Award of Narrabeen Beach Surf Lifesaving Club Incorporated.

Resolution 3: That in recognition of many years of outstanding service to the club including completing over 1,000 patrol hours, being Patrolperson of the Year, Director of Surf Sports and in encouragement of competition, with the approval of the Board of Management, and in accordance with the club constitution, Kevin Lee be awarded Outstanding Service Award of Narrabeen Beach Surf Lifesaving Club Incorporated.

v

Motion 1: That affiliation be sought for the 2019/20 season with Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches Inc. (The Branch). Further, that the articles, constitution, by-laws, regulations and resolutions, together with the awards and equipment of The Branch, Surf Life Saving NSW, and Surf Life Saving Australia Limited be accepted without reservation.

Motion 2: To approve the appointment of BeWeiszer Accounting & Tax as auditors for the 2019 - 2020 Financial reporting year.

Motion 3: That Narrabeen Beach SLSC adopt a membership fee structure for 2019 - 20 season under which no membership fees payable for Active patrolling members.

Youth Development

We had another great Nippers season for 2018/19 at Narrabeen. Even though we encountered various challenges during the year with the weather and ocean conditions, nothing could dampen the enthusiasm of the children each week. Numbers were slightly down on the previous year, a trend experienced across most clubs nationally. I would like to start by acknowledging the Junior Board along with all the parents that worked extraordinarily hard in volunteering roles to make things happen throughout the season. Also, to all the nippers who turned up with smiles on their faces and had fun over the year - you just have to look at the Facebook photos to see the enjoyment they had.

The Junior Club Person of the Year is one award that is not points orientated - it is based on a young person’s character, along with attributes that demonstrate the surf lifesaving value of ‘selfless dedication’. This year one name kept popping up repeatedly when talking with various people, so it was a unanimous decision. Xavier Gillespie was always there to help me with the water safety and anything I asked him to do - nothing was a problem which was appreciated.

For the older age groups (U14) there was a transition from the conventional nipper environment to the Narra Water Rats, along with gaining their SRC (Surf Rescue Certificate) under the watchful eyes of dedicated trainers, Ella Cook and Jordan Howard.

It was great to see the 12 participants achieve their SRC. All are now patrolling members at the club and an asset to each patrol. A big congratulations to:

Vale Thomas Walsh Season 2018-19 sadly commenced with the devastating news of the suicide death of our much loved and valued youth member, Thomas Walsh.

Tom joined Narrabeen Beach SLSC as an Under 8 nipper in 2008 and progressed through junior activities before achieving his Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion. He remained an active patrolling member on Patrol 10. Tom’s death brought home to us the reality of the mental health crisis among our youth.

Our hearts go out to the Walsh family and friends, along with our own club colleagues in processing this news. We thank the friends and family of Tom Walsh whose donations enabled the purchase of a new rescue board known as “The Thomas Walsh” in remembrance of Tom and his outstanding 10 years of membership at Narrabeen Beach. Please look out for it on patrol every weekend.

Tom’s achievements and contribution to our club were as follows:  Junior member U8-U14 (2008-2013)  State Junior Competitor (2009-2012)

 Junior Point Score Winner (2010, 2011 &  Junior Club Water Champion (2012) 2012)  Junior Male Overall Club Champion (2012)  Surf Rescue Certificate (March 2014)

 U15 Boys Bronze Club Champion (2015)  U19 Male Club Champion (2018)

 Bronze Medallion (2017)  Silver Medallion Beach Management ( 2018)

 Contributed 90 patrol hours (2014-2018)

We continue to support the Walsh family through their grief, and our own.

Rest in Peace, Thomas Walsh. 6 Oct 2000 - 16 Oct 2018 Thanks for your service to Narrabeen Beach SLSC
