The people selected to Oteach at the Independent Music Conference are accomplished members of your peer group. They can speak to you from experience, because they are the hard working indies who are out there in the trenches everyday. They are the people actually making it happen and helping to build our newly emerging industry into a viable alternative to the existing system currently controlled by huge multi-national corporations. At IMC05 we’ll be discussing the issues that are of concern to independent musicians who want to sell their product directly to their fans. We’ll be talking about where we are right now, and where we would like our independent music industry to go as we move into the future. The agenda of classes last year proved highly effective, as did our policy of presenting each class more than once to prevent schedule conflicts for our attendees. Not only are we repeating many of last year’s great workshops, with the instructors returning again as well, but we’ve also added quite a few new classes that are sure to be of great value. As a result state-of-the-art methods for extracting entities and relationships from unstructured data make in- correct extractions or produce noise. With the advent of human computing, com- putationally hard tasks have been addressed through human inputs. While text- based knowledge acquisition can benefit from this approach, humans alone cannot bear the burden of extracting knowledge from the vast textual resources that exist today. Even making payments for crowdsourced acquisition can quickly become prohibitively expensive. In this thesis we present principled methods that effectively garner human com- puting inputs for improving the extraction of knowledge-base facts from natural language texts. Our methods complement automatic extraction techniques with hu- man computing to reap benefits of both while overcoming each other’s limitations.

It focuses primarily on the political campaign to ban the sport in the 1990s and the repercussions that campaign had on MMA itself. Furthermore, it examines the censorship of music and video games in the 1990s. The central argument of this work is that the political campaign to ban Mixed Martial Arts was part of a larger political movement to censor violent entertainment.
