The 15-song set was produced by Tyler Chester (Sara Bareilles, Margaret Glaspy) and is the follow up to her critically acclaimed 2016 solo album Young In All The Wrong Ways. Created with families in mind, the personal project encompasses songs Sara embraced as a child herself and brings storytelling, solace, and encouragement to the listener, no matter the age. In addition to two stunning original songs, the album includes Sara’s renditions of “Pure Imagination” from the 1971 film Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, The Beatles’ “Good Night,” “Moon River” (originally sung by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s), and more. Under the Pepper Tree also reunites Sara’s Nickel Creek bandmates Chris Thile and her brother Sean on “Blue Shadows on the Trail” (from the 1986 comedy The Three Amigos), Sara’s I’m With Her bandmates Sarah Jarosz & Aoife O’Donovan on “Tumbling Tumbleweeds” (originally performed by Roy Rogers & Sons of the Pioneers), Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes on Harry Nilsson’s “Blanket for a Sail,” David Garza on Roy Orbison’s “Beautiful Dreamer,” and Sara’s now three-year old daughter on her immensely sweet rendition of The Sound of Music’s “Edelweiss.” Sara admits that she initially felt conflicted about making a children’s record until she realized that perhaps this album could impact a young listener in the same manner as the music from her own childhood affected her.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SAN DIEGO BLUEGRASS SOCIETY By Dwight Worden May 13, 2014 THE EARLY YEARS The late 1960s and early 70s were a time of change in America. Students were active, an unpopular war was underway, and many young Americans were breaking with the traditions of their parents. It was the season of long hair and love. The new generation was experimenting with, among other things, music. Amidst the excitement and turmoil of the times many, both young and old, were searching for authenticity and solid values in music and lifestyles. The folk boom of the 1950's and early 60's had awakened many to the raw authenticity of acoustic, folk, and bluegrass music. It was during this time period that groups like the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers were making a bluegrass mark in San Diego. Two local members of that band went on to national rock and roll stardom, Chris Hillman (mandolin) who became a founding member of the Byrds (bass), and Bernie Leadon (guitar)who joined the Eagles (guitar). Kenny Wertz of the “Barkers” (banjo) went on to bluegrass fame in Country Gazette (guitar) and with the Flying Burrito Brothers. There were jam sessions at the Blue Guitar music store, then located in Old Town (now on Mission Gorge Road). Venues like the Heritage in Mission Beach and the Candy Company brought acts like Vern and Ray, the Dillards, and others to town. “Cactus Jim” Soldi of Valley Music in El Cajon was the first to bring Bill Monroe to town at the Bostonia Ballroom in El Cajon.

Sarah Jarosz Undercurrent
Sarah Jarosz Undercurrent "I really like that word," Sarah Jarosz says of the title of Undercurrent, her fourth Sugar Hill album. "If you look up the definition, it's 'an underlying feeling or influence' or 'a flow of water moving below the surface.' To me, that really encompasses the feeling behind this record." That evocative imagery is appropriate for Undercurrent, whose 11 original songs seem to reveal new lyrical depth and sonic nuance with every listen. A gifted multi-instrumentalist, a singularly expressive vocalist and a songwriter of rare insight, Sarah Jarosz has been described by The New York Times as "one of acoustic music's most promising young talents: a singer-songwriter and mandolin and banjo prodigy with the taste and poise to strike that rare balance of commercial and critical success." Although it's her fourth album, Undercurrent is a milestone for Jarosz in more ways than one. It's her first release since graduating with honors from the New England Conservatory of Music, and her first since relocating to New York City. "This is the first record I've made since being out on my own and experiencing a lot of changes, and I think that that's reflected in the songs," Jarosz explains. "It's also the first record I've ever made that feels to me like a complete thought, with a beginning, a middle and an ending. It's also the first time I've made an album that doesn't have any covers on it. I wanted it to feel like the rollercoaster ride that is life, so I put a lot of thought into sequencing the songs.

Sean Watkins Co-Founded Nickel Creek When He Was Just 12 Years
Sean Watkins co-founded Nickel Creek when he was just 12 years old, kickstarting a career that's taken him from the stage of the Grammy Awards to the top of the bluegrass charts. Along the way, he's become an award-winning guitarist, a singer/songwriter and a member of several different bands, not to mention one of the early pioneers of a genre now known across the world as Americana. Now, after 25 years of being either a band member of sideman, Watkins is throwing his full weight behind a new solo album, All I Do Is Lie. "It's a culmination of the past 10 years," he says of the record. "It was borne out of a drive to step out of supportive roles in bands. I do like backing up other artists, but in the last couple of years, I've started owning my own personality as a musician. I've had the urge to put my name on something and step out of the supporting role." Folk fans are already familiar with Nickel Creek's story. Formed decades ago as a bluegrass trio, the group expanding its sound — and its popularity — with albums like the Grammy- winning This Side, which became a crossover hit on the bluegrass, country and pop charts in 2002. Three years later, when Nickel Creek decided to take an open-ended break from the stu- dio, Watkins found himself with more time to focus on other projects. He made the most of it, forming an indie-folk duo called Fiction Family with Switchfoot's frontman, Jon Foreman, and launching a monthly variety show called the Watkins Family Hour with his sister.

The 'Master Model' Mara Kilgore On Saturday nights at six o'clock, my father and I sit in cool, leather chairs around an antique side table whose chestnut top wears round and ringed stains from years of hot mugs and dark pints upon it. Chris Thile's voice spills from hung speakers and sweetens the room as he narrates this week's sponsors: "This portion of our show is brought to you, as always, by Fast AF. Fiddle tunes ru·e safe, therapeutic, andfun." Thile is the host of American Public Radio's Live From Here, a show where musicians from all different backgrounds rendezvous to explore the depths of Folk and Bluegrass. Now 37, Thile made his first appearance on the show, then titled A Prairie Home Companion, when he was only 15 and already well on his way to becoming a mandolin virtuoso (Streep). He, like I, was inspired at a young age by Saturday nights with Garrison Keillor. Growing up in a musical family, Chris Thile picked up his first mandolin at age four. By 13, he was touring in his band Nickel Creek and had already released his fast solo album (Stone). In recent years, when not hosting Live From Here, Thile plays with his band, Punch Brothers, an incredibly talented Bluegrass, and yet not Bluegrass, quintet.
